Amazing all aroundshino12023-11-26Version 2.0f

This is a great total conversion hack of Dragon Warrior, with a completely new storyline and tone. While a lot is unchanged from original, the effort on display is impressive. Writing quality is above most NES RPGs and more comparable to SNES ones.

I will be frank though - I didn't beat it legit. Because it's a Dragon Warrior hack, it's insanely grindy, and I genuinely recommend the Amnethen Apocalypse patches that make the game move at a much nicer pace. I didn't make the game easier per se, I only lowered weapon costs and level-up thresholds to alleviate grinding.

Technically Impressive, but GrindyEmptyeye2022-01-21Version 2.0f

Dragoon X Omega- Gold Edition is a complete overhaul of Dragon Warrior, turning it from a generic fantasy adventure to something more futuristic. You play as a psychic soldier who is one of the last of a failed rebellion. You're given a choice: Die, or save the people you were rebelling against from an even bigger threat.

The main positive here: This is an almost complete hack of Dragon Warrior. Particularly for its release date, it's very technically impressive. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a commercially released RPG on the NES if you didn't know in advance it was a hack of Dragon Warrior.

Which brings me to my two main complaints about the game. First, if you *do* know it's a hack of Dragon Warrior-which you do, if you're reading this-you can see the Dragon Warrior peeking through at pretty much every turn, from shop selection, to enemy sprites and abilities. Which brings me to my second main complaint.

The original Dragon Warrior is a hugely important game historically, basically inventing the JRPG as we know it today. It is also an absolute slog to play through, being mostly level grinding. The changes made in this hack make it even *more* of a slog, to the point where you're likely to quit before getting much of anywhere. Given the amount of changes elsewhere, that experience and gold yields weren't rebalanced to reduce the percentage of playtime spent is mystifying to me-the author clearly knew how to do it and just didn't.

It's still an impressive hack and worth checking out, but I'd recommend either going with the Amnethen Apocalypse and applying some of the patches there, or (If you know enough about ROM hacking yourself) editing the enemy yields to be closer to the later remakes of Dragon Warrior/Quest.

A quick deathOld_gamer2019-10-15Version 2.0f

Well, I played the original Dragoon x before I even discovered this site and now I have much to try.....for better or worse.

I thought I could give this a whirl and within the first few encounters, like right out of the first castle you start at is brutal. You are weak, VERY weak. I had difficulty just hitting the first enemy and barely escaped with my life. But I need to level up, so I had to get to the nearest town to rest up but the next enemy literally a few steps away just murdered me. I tried the game a second time and got my ass handed to me again.....at the very beginning..

So, I gave this a shot and got eviscerated quick. This is stupid difficult at the beginning. Nothing like doing one point of damage per hit on an enemy with 5 or 7 health and has good evasion and you take 1-3 damage of the 15 life points you have. Or the second enemy that does considerably more.

Needless to say, I gave up on this.

Maybe I'll try the easy mode. Maybe.

DXO needs to be remakeGamerhenky2015-11-13Version 2.0f

Gamma, Omega, and Sigma

When this game is success, Sliver X needs to be remake this game in future such going to release in Steam or Consoles.

This hack must be recommended so why.

  • It's original game, not fanmade copyrighted games.
  • The main character is female instead male.
  • Storyline has been changed than DW1.
  • Set's on Sci-Fi themed instead Fantasy (Unlike StarCraft).
  • Overwhelming Soundtrack.
  • Hard Battles.
  • Instead using Swords, the main character uses Guns, Rifles, etc.

So, what's remain. get this patch or use the Easy Type patch to play it, it's fantastic game.

Decent Overall, but some Really Bad Design Decisionsmagictrufflez2015-10-05Version 2.0f

Disclaimer: I couldn't get far into this hack the first time I played, but the "easy" patch helped me slog my way through to the end.

There are a lot of things to recommend about this hack-it's unique plot and is a pretty total overhaul (although some parts are exactly like the original DW but with different names). If you don't play with the "easy" patch, you are in for a slog, because this hack does not fix the traditional DW grind.

If you can handle that, do beware of a number of original DW choke points that were made a bit ridiculous by the hacking. Some parts are FAR too difficult, and some of the ways the map was changed makes the monster mobs kind of nonsensical at points.

If you have a high level of patience, play this. If you kind of do, get the "easy" patch and go to town. If you don't have any whatsoever, skip it.

Fantastic Futuristic Foibles!obscurumlux012015-09-19Version 2.0f

An early hack that showed the power and dedication of one person using DOS-based tools to get things done.

Sliver X completely changed Dragon Warrior from a generic fantasy game with no plot to a sci-fi futuristic styled game in the vein of Phantasy Star.

No catgirls here! Your female protagonist is all you get for your solo party of one.

Fantastic aesthetics, a deep and moody/grim atmosphere, and NPCs that always remind you just how hopeless everything will be if you fail at your task.

The music is top-notch for certain specific tracks but is far surpassed by the sequel's music.

The constant random battles prevent you from really hearing the entire Overworld theme unless you stand still and really listen to it.

The battle music is quite short and loops often, creating a reptitive drudge to grinding.

The story is significantly improved from Dragon Warrior and you'll likely enjoy talking to NPCs.

It isn't REQUIRED to play this game to enjoy the sequel but it is still a nice romp down memory lane to see just how 'Nintendo Hard' games used to be.

As a final note, this game uses the DW1 engine so many of the features and bugs present in the original DW1 are also in this game. These include the Dragon's Scale glitch, the Treasure Chest glitch, and having your stats and growth determined by your character's name.

Give this patch a go and try out the Easy Mode patch if grinding for hours isn't your thing :)

Not Perfect, But Innovative DW HackKlaviaturist2011-03-16-

This is a fairly good hack of Dragon Warrior 1 for the NES. Everything is changed, including music, graphics, maps, story, etc. At first glance I was really looking forward to playing this. The problem is that the level grinding gets in the way of the storyline and slows everything to a screeching stop at times. But thus was the first Dragon Warrior game as well.

Although the game has a different storyline and the whole game has been overhauled in general, there are still many similarities to events that happen in DW. For instance, in DW there is a town guarded by a Golem that can only be defeated with the fairy flute (I think that's the name). In Dragoon X Omega there is a town with a crazed robot on the barrier that can only be defeated with a certain item (drawing a blank on the item). There were many other similarities as well.

The game itself is rather good but it suffers from what DW suffered from and that is a ridiculous amount of level grinding. It actually got boring after a while and, although I made it near the end of the game, I lost interest in beating it because of the grinding. Doesn't mean it's not worth playing because it is probably one of the better hacks out there. Just means you should get prepared for a lot of tedium.

Lastly, this is apparently a remake of another DW hack simply entitled Dragoon X. There was also a great sequel that's a hack of FF1 that is well worth your time.
