Hack description

This is probably the best Zelda hack out there. Almost every single thing possible to modify in the game has been modified. This hack exemplifies the talented individuals in our community. Anybody even remotely interested in ROMhacking should give this one a try!

The old world map has been completely overwritten by the new one. You are guaranteed not to recognize any locations from the previous game. All location of dungeons and secrets have been changed as well.

Secrets are now locked according to what quest you're playing. For example, the rock you push to find a dungeon won't move on the second quest, so you have to find a new entrance somewhere else in the world. The game allows each secret to be set to 1st Quest, 2nd Quest, both, or neither. So, many places where you can bomb, burn, push things and use the recorder are quest-specific.

Most of the monsters have new graphics (including all bosses) and some even have new colors.

There are 42 possible block, water & statue arrangements for the many dungeon rooms, and all but 3 are brand new.

That's just a taste of what has been changed and how much work went into this hack!

Really captures the spirit of the orginalbrianoblivion2020-09-20Version 1.0

I finished playing through both quests. Although I had to look up a couple hints in quest 1, I managed to play through both quests completely blind otherwise. As intended for the original game this is funner if you make your own graph paper map(s) as you progress!

This hack really captures the open and exploratory spirit of the original game, keeping the original formula but really taking it to new depths. I especially liked that in Quest 2 the dungeons were just random letters so you just didn't care what order you played them. Having to go back and forth between different dungeons was also a concept I really wanted in the original and this hack did a good job with. The dungeons themselves were very well designed and even insidious at times, but nothing too difficult to overcome. The challenge was just right.

I was overall very impressed with this hack and both quests were such a worthwhile and rewarding gaming experience. If you love Zelda 1, both quests and want a real Quest 3 and 4. This is the hack for you!

Looking for a Z1 Hack? Play this one first!!!The3Dude2018-04-02Version 1.0

This hack is the best Zelda 1 hack so far. It has a completely edited over world, brand new dungeons, and new graphics. I also like the (Jumping) feature so much that I've used it in my new hack ~Link's Shadow~. This is the hack that inspired me to learn how to ROM hack, and hex edit. Thank you for making this, even though it was 17 years ago!

Probably better than all other zelda hacks.jimreid2017-06-17Version 1.0

I don't think any other game like this could possibly top what this game does.

Best Rom HackMAOT6662015-12-24Version 1.0

When I was younger, the very first Zelda game has always been one of my favorites to play and this one be would have been the perfect sequel to Zelda I if it came out in 1987. This rom hack seems to have all the great mixtures of hidden items, mini boss fights, and great items to get early in the game. The overworld map has changed, enemies have been used from Zelda II, and the dungeons are challenging but yet fun to play. The new puzzles in the dungeons are tricky to find but rewarding after you complete it. I have to say for a fan made hack, this is probably one of the best made for the first Zelda game, if you like challenges and if you can get through the first Zelda game for quest 1 and 2 than i'm more than sure you'll have fun in this rom, 2nd quest is pretty tricky as well but after playing it, you'll get the gesture of the game. I recommended in you for playing this for sure!

9/10

Great level of challengeJinx2013-12-12-

This is a great hack and well worth playing. It is a completely rewritten game, with a new overworld and dungeons. It manages to maintain the feel of Zelda, while providing a "new" (albeit 2001) NES-style challenge.

The order of dungeons can be quite puzzling at times, as one needs to enter some dungeons for certain items, then leave to use those items in other dungeons. This could be frustrating, but, fortunately, it doesn't usually take too long to realize what's needed. Ironically, the hardest part for some might just be finding the dungeons-especially in the second quest!

The hack switches the overworld/underworld enemies, which seems rather unnecessary, but doesn't really affect game play much-you simply have to get used to which enemy is which.

The map is very well engineered, with secret passageways and limited-access sections that add a lot of interest & gradation to each quest. The color scheme is rather drab in some areas, and some of the tiles are "glitchy by choice"-often in order to provide some sort of gameplay feature. As a result, the graphics are probably a bit worse than the original.

Nevertheless, if interesting/puzzling gameplay is what you seek, then definitely give this a try!

For any original Legend of Zelda fanmrrichard9992013-04-13-

I am surprised with the amount of downloads and for how long it has been here nobody has written a review on a really good ROM hack of Zelda. This is definitely worth giving a play through with all the complete changes of the world and the graphic changes as well as a whole new storyline! A lot of work as been put into this and to not play it would be a crime.
