Hack description

This is a hack of Vs. Super Mario Bros. that allows the game to be run on a standard MMC1 cart with 8KB SRAM. No custom hardware required!

It also adds the following features:

Pre-game menu that allows you to set dipswitches and reset the high scores

High score retention (when using battery-backed SRAM)

Correct NES colors (Vs. hardware used RGB PPUs with scrambled colors)

This patch works with either of the commonly available Vs. Super Mario Bros. NES ROMs. It has been tested on the PowerPak, but should also work on any other flash cart or copier with basic MMC1 support.

Version 1.1a:

ROM header was erroneously set to NES 2.0 with incorrect SRAM size, causing some emulators (and maybe newer flash carts?) to not actually save SRAM. This has been corrected. (NOTE: PRG data remains unchanged, so dedicated MMC1 carts do not need to be updated.)

Version 1.1:

Fixed intermittent scanline glitch on NTSC PPUs (this affected the original game as well)

Changed default dipswitch settings to match those found in the operation manual; defaults can now be restored by pressing A + B + Select at the menu

Dipswitch settings are now saved in SRAM

Implemented timer speed settings for both original and alternate ROMs (no need for separate ROMs anymore)

It seemed unattainable... The arcade version is at your home. Now it's a reality. A port to a well-known Mapper, plus the settings of the game the WAY you want it. In general, it turns out that now the "Arcade Special Version" is now on your emulators (consoles) without problems. We don't need Coins now, because it's free. Thanks for that.

I'm glad that BMF did this fix, he does great work when it comes to his projects, I love playing VS. Super Mario Bros. even more thanks to him, I love messing around with the different options before playing this game. :) Can I nitpick a little bit? It'd be cool if the Spiney Egg behavior was fixed, if BMF or someone else fixes that, it'll be perfect. :D

And I mean you literally can't play without it. This patch is necessary in order to get the game to work on emulators and flashcarts. Being able to set the difficulty at the beginning via the dipswitches is great addition, and handled very well. The default settings for this game are just kind of cruel.

I totally love this fantastic port of the arcade Vs. Super Mario Bros. I enjoyed and still enjoy it! Also great that you don't need custom hardware to play it and bugfixes have been made as well. For you guys, I also suggest to try to port various Vs. NES games like Vs. Ice Climber for example. Those would be the greatest hit along with this.

The addition of a dip switch menu is an awesome improvement to this game. Only played a few levels so far but it worked without any glitches on actual game cart and emulator.

This hack is great as it makes it more compatible with emulators. The dipswitch screen is also a great addition and can make the game a bit easier. I expect to see this offered on cart repro sites as this is a great game to begin with. Recommended and should be your default ROM when playing this game.
