This is a hack which replaces the opponents with characters from other games including the arcade version of Punch-out, Super Punch-out, among other games. The referee has been replaced by Wario and the floor tarp has been recolored. The text has been modified to reflect the new content. Little Mac's trainer has been replaced by Von Kaiser. The developer of this hack did a great job regarding the sprite and verbiage changes, but that is all that it is. There is no difference in the way your opponents fight. So if you have a specific pattern down for defeating, let's say, Mike Tyson, then defeating "Sandman" will be an absolute breeze. Just think of this hack as the fighters getting new names, new appearances, but fighting identically to their replacement.
| Good Punch Out!! Graphics Hack | keithisgood | 2012-12-05 | - |
In the array of graphical hacks of Punch-Out!!, this stands near the top. Due to complicated animations and shared tiles, graphic swaps in Punch-Out!! are quite difficult to pull off. The All New? Punch-Out!! (v.1.0), however, manages to successfully alter character sprites while keeping within the Punch-Out!! universe, creating a nice gameplay experience. The difficulties of graphics-only hacks are present here. The layout of certain sprite palettes cause color-shifts during character animations (Mask-X's head comes to mind). Computer AI also remains unchanged, so although the boxers look different, they still fight with precisely the same moves/patterns. As far as graphics swaps of Punch-Out!!, this version looks more complete and polished. I'd give it a 6/10; the sprite changes are well done and provide a nice alternative to simply playing through the standard Punch-Out!! roster.
