This hack combines Sonic 1 & 2 in Sonic & Knuckles style. You can play through all the stages in order in a single campaign. You can choose to play it as a single character, a duo, or a trio. The teams are Sonic/Tails/Knuckles and Espio/Charmy/Vector. (So you could do a duo of Espio and Vector, but not Espio and Tails.) It uses the physics of Sonic 3, and replaces the normal shield with Sonic 3's elemental shields. So, on its own, it's already the best way to play Sonic 1 and 2.

Today though, I discovered that when you create a save file, you can choose "Chaotix Style" co-op, giving you the Knuckles Chaotix ring-tether system, but with improved physics! This makes it, hands down, the best Sonic game to play with my kids. No longer are they only on screen for a half second; we are always on screen together, and always working together to get through the levels. If I were to ever get a Sega Genesis, a repro cart of this hack would be a no brainer.

According to my title, you should understand what this means. However, it is necessary to explain it carefully. It takes the compilation Sonic 1 and 2 and carefully introduces the hack Sonic 2 Heroes. The concept has not been so carefully combined and qualitatively refined before.

On the screen with "Save Screens", we see that it stores up to 11 save files, and one "Without Saving Progress". In the settings, you can configure the "image on the home screen", listen to music, or even turn on cheats and play with them.

And in the "Save" screen - you can choose "The number of characters", "Their locations in their own free order", "Which team to play for", "Choose a level" (And if cheats are used, then there is an item: "Start immediately in Super Form" and "15 game continuations")

Speaking of characters, THEY ALL use ONLY THEIR SKILLS from the original games of the classic series about the hedgehog. (therefore, there's no homing attacks or, alas, techniques from Sonic Heroes)

I recommend that you familiarize yourself and play this kind of compilation hack yourself.

This hack is truly astounding to see. If this was just Sonic 2 with the heroes mechanic, it would have been great, but to add Sonic 1 as well with all features intact is absolutely incredible. I love the variety in this game: the ability to play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the same playthrough is cool, but being able to switch between them at any time is invaluable in gameplay. The addition of the Chaotix is an interesting add on and leads to some great replay value.

Some people have mentioned that the level select feature and extra characters makes the game too easy. I think their addition is a feature, not a cheat. You can still play the games as intended with a few quality of life upgrades, or you can also experience all the fun and abilities that this hack offers on the original gameplay.

Would recommend this hack over its source material. Thank you so much to the hacker who made this masterpiece!

Anyone who grew up with Sonic has likely wondered what it would be like to have Tails or Knuckles in Sonic 1, or have the entire crew zipping through Sonic 2. Heck, this hack proves that someone out there was really yearning for Team Chaotix to make an appearance as well. This hack delivers all of that in a single package, and while the results are admittedly game-breaking, it's great being able to sprint through Memory Lane with such a robust cast of characters.

As the description states, this hack grants you a total of six playable characters across Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, and the amount of options that you have at your fingertips is stellar. You can either go with a full team of three or limit yourself to one or two, untethered or tethered a la Knuckles Chaotix, along with a level select. For those who have always wanted to play with Knuckles or Tails in Sonic 1, that dream can finally come true. Sonic also gets his midair spin attack, along with his later sprites, which look much more robust than the ones from his Sonic 1 incarnation.

Another nice touch is the modified ending to Sonic 1, which now features a seamless transition into the beginning of Sonic 2, along with cameo appearances by Amy. It's done with such a clean, professional touch that one would swear that the minds behind this hack must be working for Sega.

The one thing to keep in mind when stepping foot into this hack is that unless you're playing with just Sonic or Espio, it is obscenely unbalanced. The levels in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 were never designed for the kind of mobility that characters like Tails and Charmy offers, and you can easily skip entire sections of the game simply by flying over them. The game also spreads power-ups across your entire team, which creates a situation where a single shield power-up can grant you a whopping three to burn through. Yet despite all of that, solo runs are generally okay, and these levels are not new for many Sonic players; the fun is in running through their old, familiar stomping grounds in ways that were not possible back in the day.

If there are any gripes to had, one is that I would argue that Espio is a bit out of his element in this hack, and this is because Sonic 1 and 2 were never designed for his ability to run along walls and ceilings, which leaves his character feeling tragically bland in comparison to everyone else. This is more so the result of poor circumstance though, and not the ones behind the hack.

The other issue is that the Choatix-style tether, which was a core feature in the Knuckles Chaotix levels, is a bit of an odd duck in Sonic 1 and 2. Here, it seems to exist as a way to keep three human players working cooperatively, but is otherwise insignificant for a one-player experience.

Overall, this is a very clean and fantastic hack with a lot of love and care put into it. Sure, having three shields or Charmy just zip through entire stages is incredibly game-breaking, but what you get are new and exciting ways to explore old and familiar grounds, and it's an absolute blast.

First off let it be known that I absolutely love the idea of playing as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles simultaneously. However, because the game wasn't built with the team mechanic in mind it becomes far too easy. Every shield monitor gives you 3 shields, Tails can fly over just about anything in the sonic one portion, and don't even get me started on team chatoix. Charmy is the most over powered piece of shit in all of gaming. He has the same flight ability as tails, except there is no cool down which means you can skip over everything and the only time it's necessary to stop flying is during boss fights which are also laughably easy with 3 characters. Stage select is also unlocked from the get go, so you never feel like your really accomplishing anything.

Play it if your really curious, but don't expect to get a full play through out of this.

This hack blows my mind. It blew my mind even before the Chaotix update.

Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog was an old dream from the days when Sonic and Knuckles was first released, that was realized about a decade ago. But this is much more than that.

You can adjust the number of characters you have (3, 2, or 1), and which order the characters are in (so you can, say, play just Knuckles and Tails, or just Sonic and Knuckles, or just Tails, etc).

You can switch which character you're controlling easily on the fly- that ALONE sells me on it.

The game is effectively "Tails in Sonic 1", "Knuckles in Sonic 1", "Espio in Sonic 1", "Vector in Sonic 1", and "Charmy in Sonic 1" COMBINED.

And there's elemental shields too! And that "jump attack" shield from Sonic 3D Blast, which sort of resembles the alter games' Homing Attack.

Tails works like Sonic 3, so he can fly. Even just Tails flying in Sonic 2 has been worthy of it's own standalone hack in the past!

And that's to say nothing of getting the Chaotix involved, which adds even more wacky possibilities. In fact, this is the only way to play Espio in Sonic 1 and 2 that I know of.

Even playing as Sonic is enhanced, with the lightspeed dash from Sonic CD added (and spindashing in Sonic 1 of course... something that could've been the entire function of a romhack on it's own, and was supposed to be a selling point for the dubious GBA port, but here it's just another in an overwhelming list of features). (However, my one regret here is I do wish this hack had a variant that let you use Sonic 2 sprites for Sonic, a la Sonic 3 Complete.)

You can play just Sonic 1, or just Sonic 2, or just Bonus Stages, or start wherever you want. And there's a save feature, too- why not! Amy Rose even appears as an NPC to fly the Tornado (Tails' airplane).

I can't quiiiiite call this "the only Sonic 1 and 2 hack you'll ever need" when there's other wonderful hacks like Amy in Sonic 1 and Sally Acorn in Sonic 2, but this is still an amazing, feature-rich hack that is absolutely worth getting, and is one of the best hacks of any game I've ever seen.

If you're only going to try a few romhacks (or this is your first one ever), this should be on your short list!

This is turning into a huge hack. The Chaotix characters give you a whole new way to play the game. Not only that, you can add elasticity to them similar to Knuckles Chaotix. Besides those guys you can still play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. They are also a interesting group. Then you can play either levels from Sonic 1 or 2, or both combined. It's really a great overall package. I recommend playing this way instead of playing Sonic 1 or 2 alone.
