Hack description

Level Zero is a concept hack that was initially designed to circumvent the quirky nature of magic defense and other stats by removing the level-up entirely. After changing character and enemy stats, I mainly tried to learn to do more things with the ROM and improve the game's balance by tweaking more and more components of the game, even adjusting/adding a few minor events.

While this is not explicitly a hardtype hack, it is probably is a bit on the difficult side, so if you'd like to play Chrono Trigger with a bit of an edge, Level Zero is worth a go.

This patch earlier was known as "Frozen in Time" but has changed substantially since then.

Prepare to Kiss Dirtobscurumlux012015-09-09Version 0.7c

I would've said 'Prepare to Die' but that was already taken. Prepare to be Wiped Out, Prepare to be Beaten to a Pulp, Prepare to Lose Repeatedly.

But I like the concepts of defeat meaning you kiss the dirt ;)

So onto the review!

The removal of levels is a godsend to those looking for a new spin on the game.

Not directly compatible with the Retranslation hacks (for some odd reason) without having to manually go into Temporal Flux and fix various broken things (dialogue boxes, items from chests, etc).

This alteration to the game is NOT recommended for beginners! You will 'kiss dirt' at the first boss; almost guaranteed.

You will likely have to look in an old Nintendo Power Magazine (or look on GameFAQs) for some boss strategies.

You will have to pay attention, carry and use consumables, conserve your resources, and otherwise pay attention so you don't 'kiss dirt' too often.

So what does all this mean? It means that when you remove leveling from an RPG as awesome as this, you make it far more focused on player skill and boss strategy. This is a fantastic concept that I hope spreads to other games!

Absolutely a must to play through for any fan of Chrono Trigger! Only minor quibble I could make is the lack of a version that works with the Chrono Compendium Retranslation. If they did that then I would consider my life complete.

Amazing concept, unfortunately after awhile the game becomes impossibleBregalad2014-09-26-

The concept behind this hack is great, it is to make a RPG without using levels at all. The stats are fixed and can't be improved. Force, magic, etc... tabs are also disabled (they are still here, but you can't use them).

The only improvement possible is getting better equipment, and getting new Techs.

This idea is very great and amazing. I absolutely hate level grinding, so I wish more RPGs would be without levels.

The bosses are much harder than in the original game. Namely, they do A LOT of damage, sometimes almost killing your allies in one hit. The Tank Dragon and Masamune are epically difficult. However, it's great because it's a good challenge, since I played this game a good dozen of times, finding strategies to beat boss despite their increased strenght was fun.

Shines a new light over Chrono Triggermariomarinato2014-08-16-

Being a Chrono Trigger fan for nearly 20 years, I always look for new things about it, which I keep discovering from time to time.

This hack shines a new light over Chrono Trigger, turning this usually easy game into something new. And I realized I was playing a different game when I got killed by Yakra in 600 A.D.

I almost gave up when I faced Dragon Tank, (on this hack, this is one of the hardest fights of the game), but I'm glad I didn't. Most boss fights required well-thought strategies and for some of them I had to use the help of some low-level FAQs around the web. This led me to the re-discovery of long-lost memories of some bosses trickeries.

Some items I never used on my regular SNES gaming became extremely useful, like those elemental protective armours and some of the rings. In fact, on some battles, they were the difference between life and death.

And yes, this hack is beatable, I just did it. Lavos final fight is pretty easy when compared to some earlier ones, like Giga Gaia, Dalton and the Twin Golems.

If you're stuck, call for help: there's someone here who might help ya!

A great hack, well worth your time.

Congratulations and thank you very much for putting it out.

In my opinion, EXP and Tech points were redundant since they both provided a linear increase in power.

With EXP gone, you not only get rid of this redundancy but you also create a character progression that's unique to Chrono Trigger.

Also, since your stats are locked the whole game, you actually need to visit shops every now and then for better equipment or recovery items.

The downside is that New Game+ loses some of its meaning since you no longer have level 99 to strive for.
