Hack description

This is a hack that transforms Donkey Kong Country into a boss rush mode. Can you make it through all 7 bosses unscathed? Multiple options can be chosen for battles. Version 1.5 now has all of the features that DKC2: Brigand Barrage does, notably: You can choose to play as a two-player team in addition to going it alone. If playing alone, you can choose whether you start as Donkey Kong or Diddy, and whether the other Kong is present (For a challenge, try fighting all of the bosses as Diddy alone). Alternate color palettes can be chosen for the Kongs, not unlike Super Smash Bros. and other fighting games. You can also choose to fight individual bosses in addition to battling them all in succession. Best times are now saved to battery-backed memory for each individual boss, as well as the total.

You may also notice that a few sound effects have been fixed, and some animations are more fluid than they are in the original game.

Like an authentic extra mode. The Beaky Buccaneer2021-03-01Version 1.5

Donkey Kong Country: Boss Blitz is a fun and polished boss-rush hack, similar in nature to The Arena from SNES contemporary Kirby Super Star, only with numerous customisation options and much better record-keeping.

I tested DKC: Boss Blitz in RetroPie for the Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB, and also in the version for the Raspberry Pi Zero W, and it worked correctly with both of them.

The hack includes various options for recolouring your Kongs for each run, and allows you to run through all of the bosses or just a single one of your choice. It records your best times, whether or not you took a hit during a battle, the colour of the Kongs that you used, and how far you got in a "Best Bouts" leaderboard. This feature really adds a lot to the game, and without it I can't imagine it being as replayable as it is.

Even though Donkey Kong Country's bosses are the simplest in the entire series, it's still a fun test of nerves to try to blaze through them as quickly as possible, and it's fun to compete against friends as well!

The level of polish is so high that, if this hack were to be integrated into the standard Donkey Kong Country game, you'd be forgiven for thinking that it's restored official content.

Donkey Kong Country: Boss Blitz is an excellent companion to the Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge (an official modified version of the game that was used at various events in the 1990s) if you want a quick, competitive DKC experience. Highly recommended.
