Hack description

Mushroom Nightmare is a hack of the classic game, Super Mario Bros. It features completely revamped graphics, along with major level editing throughout the game. It also features a new storyline, as the brothers aren't trying to save the Princess anymore, it's the Mushroom King they're after.

Bowser has taken the Mushroom Chancellor hostage, and is using his power to warp the landscape to his wicked desire. His forces are all over the land, and the Brothers must come to the rescue again, before the King of the Koopa forces the Chancellor to forfeit his powers to him. This game takes place right after the original SMB.

The brothers now have different abilities! Mario, being the one that previously rescued the princess, is more experienced of the two. He is able to jump higher than his brother. However, due to his larger mass, it takes a longer amount of time and distance for him to stop, after a sprint. Luigi plays exactly like Mario, or Luigi from the original SMB.

This hack has been revisited a decade and a half later! The new version 1.5 contains countless modifications to make the game more entertaining to play. A much-improved difficulty curve, overall more thoughtful level design, glitch fixes, etc. are found in this newest version. A few clunky/iconic bits were left to assure myself that I didn't George Lucas the heck out of this thing. (Also included is the original 1.2 patch, untouched from 2005!)

A long time ago on a forum far, far away...Sails2021-05-05Version 1.5

...a hack came and went, never to be touched or seen again...

UNTIL NOW

Patch 1.5 levels the curve in fair ways while enhancing the final stretch, as well as clearly corrects many obvious bugs. It's also interesting alone for the fact that it has been upgraded 15 years later by the original creator (with the help of a few friends)! Oh, the things that passed in hacks back then...

If you're looking for something representing young 2000's ROM hack design with a few modern sensibilities sprinkled in, definitely check this out.

ORIGINAL 1.2 REVIEW: An ancient classic that has quite a bit of charm to it. Sadly, it also has some game breaking bugs. Can't wait for patch 1.3!

It's a nice idea.ActionHenk2020-03-19Version 1.2

This hack changes the levels of the game. It can be considered a refreshing take on Super Mario Bros 1.

Since there are two patches and they are both named with acronyms, and the readme file doesn't say what the difference is, it would be nice if the author of this hack clarified this. There must be some difference but it's not super obvious.

First off beautiful graphics. I really love graphics in Mario games. Just seeing peoples style and what they come up with is one of my favorite things. These graphics do not disappoint. It was not as hard as the title lead it to believe either. But as it wound down towards the end of the game, you may wanna hold on tight.

I enjoyed how the brothers were not after peach any longer, but instead they were saving the king. Very cool hack that has some very cool little details added to it to make it that much better. I love the simple music change also and the physics change.

Very cool hack that I definitely recommend to anyone who loves SMB hacks as much as I do. Plus the title screen is beautiful.

  • This game was played on FCE ULTRA GX
  • Story-

This one has a classic twist that instead of saving the princess, but the King in her place.

    Gameplay(Pro/Cons)-

This game uses some of the classic Mario gimmicks that most fans familiar with SMB1 would know right off the bat, but however he does thrown in his own gimmicks that throw a player off when you least expect it. He provides warp-pipes for certain areas should you mess up, and other warp pipes that either hinder you or help you. He used a few different sprites as enemies, and the music fits the theme of saving the king in a way too. The only problems I truly had with this game was that one vine that overlaps a pipe can get you stuck there in place, and the 7-4 castle is almost impossible to solve unless you look online, and so I provided a link in a case like this that thankfully someone recorded said level-

Afterwards it becomes absurdly hard in world 8, and I found myself having to save-states a lot. The levels are not incredibly impossible, but it is certainly at expert level of the whole game except 8-4 which is balanced better.

    Music-

The music has that king-like rescue feel to it despite the intentions of the title name of the game to make it sound nightmarish.

    Conclusion-

This game is perfect for beginner to moderate players for most of the game until world 7 is that when you have to be careful what you do afterwards if you're not planning on using save-states.

This is an awesome hack for many reasons, it takes place at night, a few palates were changed and the over world theme is n minor; the only word I can use to desribe this hack is "bad ass".
