Hack description

Castlevania Retold is--as the name suggest--a retelling of the original NES Castlevania. I wanted to keep the original story intact (Many of the CV games are retellings of the first one, this is no different) but offer new levels and graphics, this is just that. All the levels have the same themes to them they originally had, but with new layouts and enemy placement, I also wanted to keep the classic feel to it, which is why I used mostly graphics from CV2 and 3. There are very few custom graphics in the hack, I'm not good with graphics at all, but I did make a new title screen using the new CV logo (Which Moonchile later enhanced) and enhanced some of the orignal sprits. Any Castlevania fan will probably like this, but until recently I didn't notice it's one downside: It's hard. As I made this hack I pretty much learned how everything in CV's game engine works, the exact timing of enemies and such. So, while I can play through most of it with no problems even my friends who are good at Castlevania die several times on the first level. (Sorry about the short review, I suck at these kind of things...)

Pretty goodVanDam2020-04-06Version 2.0

This Castlevania hack is pretty good. It was similar to the original but also much different. It is harder than the original. The levels look nice and were exciting to play. The 3rd and 4th levels were absolutely beautiful and a very new and exciting layout. The 4th level has always been the least enjoyable for me in the original game. In this hack the 4th level was amazing with blues and turquoise colors and a beautiful background. This hack made my least favorite level my favorite. It's rare that I actually enjoy the 4th level in Castlevania hacks. Death however was not a fun boss to play and took me many tries because six blocks are added all over the screen to make it tougher to move around and dodge. That was a good idea adding the blocks but not very enjoyable for me at my current skill level. But the added blocks in the way during the fight with death did add a new challenge to the game that made it different. Not one of my favorite Castlevania hacks but it was not one of the worst either. Not bad at all. This is a good Castlevania hack.

Stage 6.....onepiecefan20072018-08-16Version 2.0

This hack is pretty good, the level design isn't beautiful but is OK, one of the things I hated is the design of enemies: for some reason almost all enemies are colored blue... Why? There are 142345657897880 colors to select and the only color used is blue? Are you kidding me? Another problem is the difficulty: the creator said that the game would be more difficult than the original but the only stage really difficult is the stage 6. Now we can move on the greatest problem of this hack: the stage 6. This stage is awful! At the start of the level you lose automatically a quarter of your life bar because an enemy spawn on you! And when you climb the ladder, there are a lot of hawks that drain your health! Fortunately at a certain point you can found an invincibility potion that helps you to pass the stage. My rating for this hack is 2.5/5 because without playing the stage 6 this hack is good, but the Stage 6 ruins everything.

It's badresq2017-10-17Version 2.0

This hack has good graphics but the level design is so bad.

The first screen in level 1 makes the player fall off of a top block to get to the bottom because the doors are switched.

The third screen on level 1 was totally unpassable - I never even passed level 1. Player must jump across three blocks - it is very cheap.

Maybe try it for the graphics if you don't mind cheap level design in the first level.

Great hack like the orginal but differentbogaabogaa2017-08-03Version 2.0

I did enjoy this hack from start to finish. Could have been a second part like Mario Bros lost level was back in the day.

The stages are redone/mixed with CV3 sprites and graphics. They look absolutely gorgeous. This gives you a feeling of playing something new and stay true with the Castlevania experience. The stages have a lot of hidden stuff to find. When I was screwed, I could mostly recover by looking for things. The difficulty curve was done better then in the original, if you ask me. For example, the hunchbacks and hawks are in the last stage and when you play it you will find stuff that helps you through. Stage 6 offers way more to explore then the original. Loved that stage! I defeated Frankenstein with whip, death with Axe and Dracula with short whip. They been new good fresh challenges.

I recommend this hack to anyone who want some more old school Castlevania experience.

Why are All CV Hacks so Mediocre?TheLuigiLightning2014-12-05Version 2.0

This hack for the most part is just lacking of inventiveness. It almost feels like I'm playing an easier version of the game. It says in the description that it's very hard. They must be talking about stage 6...

Stage 6 is impossible. It is the worst stage design I have ever seen. It's all about luck. You have those hawk enemies chasing you throughout the entire first part, and it's impossible to get past. Trust me, I've made many attempts, and I'm a master of the original Castlevania.

This isn't the worst hack of Castlevania out there, but stage 6 is just an abomination. Stage 5 wasn't that great either. The first 4 stages are okay.

I wouldn't recommend playing any Castlevania hack, to be honest, and this one's just no exception
