Hack description

This is a colorization hack of Pokemon Red and Blue, done entirely using ASM. It takes full advantage of Gameboy Color hardware, which is much more capable than the Super Gameboy. The overworld is fully and properly colorized, and with colorized attack sprites, even battles are more colorful!

In addition to color, Pokemon and Trainer sprites have been imported from Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, and so has the battle HUD. If you don't want this, the "vanilla" patch does not touch these.

Beats The Brakes Off Of YELLOW!!Kamen Rider Zi-O2024-01-12Version 1.2

Once I'd heard about this, I had to check it out for myself. Sure, I *once* preferred Yellow over Red/Blue, but...wow. The QoL changes that were backported in from Gold/Silver/Crystal easily blow away everything that Yellow has to offer!! Note that there IS a version of the hack that doesn't provide those changes, if you want the color but a more stock G1 experience...but...why would you? Even the logo on the title screen is more aesthetically pleasant to look at than the harsh iteration of the US GBC release of Yellow. (The Japanese release was every bit b&w and SGB compatible as Red/Green/Blue)

According to other reviews, there are finer points that hit hard as well, such as the ability to run this on real hardware or even inject the save file from this into the Virtual Console versions. I can't speak on those but given how great it runs on straight up emulation, I am going to try to inject this hack into my N2DSXL!! Hopefully, the dev gets around to giving Blue this exact same treatment so I can put that on my wife's N3DSXL - that'll be fun, battling & trading in color.

Final thing I almost forgot: remember how Red/Blue had Super Gameboy compatibility? Yeah, forget about that, this hack crushes that as well!! WHAT are you waiting for, exactly? If you're a fan that came up from the beginning, GET THIS NOW!!

Essentially perfect compatibility with flashable cartScoopDunk2023-10-02Version 1.2

I flashed this hack to an inside gadgets 2mb 32kb fram cart using my gbxcart. The game held its save just fine and ran with no problems. There was a handful of graphical "garbage" towards the end of the game, but nothing too jarring. A few tiles weren't displayed correctly.

The save file was also compatible with my 3DS Virtual console red version. Using homebrew, I was able to inject my full color save into my 3DS and transfer my pokemon to Pokemon Bank. The full color save is recognized as a regular red save, as long as its properly named of course. As far as I can tell there is no compatibility issues with Poke transporter, Pokemon Bank and Pokemon Home. This romhack is the bees knees. I played it for 80 hours on real hardware with essentially no issues. This is the definitely the way to go if you want to experience a vanilla red version without the ugliness of a colorless game.

There also exists another version of this romhack that implements an exp bar during battle and the pokeball caught symbol when you encounter a wild Pokemon. These quality of life changes while keeping the game as vanilla as possible has made this my all time favorite romhack.

Trip down memory lane!snakeye3552022-01-29Version 1.2

Have to say, this is an incredible hack. Yes, a few things have changed like the battle sprites for example, but I love what was done here. Now if only someone can take Skeetendo's Green hack and apply full color like this, I can die happy! Thank you, this was an excellent hack!

Looks unreal! But needs gen 1 spritesatpstudios2021-12-23Version 1.2

This looks absolutely amazing! But major problem I see is the fact that there is only one choice to use the gen 2 sprites :( I get that they are better but since we are playing gen 1 it would make more sense to just stick with the gen 1 sprites. The way I see it is that if you want to see the gen 2 sprites then thats what gold, silver and crystal are for but I can't help but feel nostalgic for the gen 1 sprites while playing this color hack.

I know there was an option to do gen 1 front sprites but then the back sprites are gen 2 so thats one step in the right direction, somebody please give the option to keep the gen 1 sprites!!

Great hackTimBTW2021-10-19Version 1.2

Great hack, makes gen 1 good to look at.

Wild Gen 1.5 Appeared!Eldrethor2021-08-25Version 1.2

Ever wondered how Gen 1 would have looked if it were officially released on the GBC? This hack is the perfect answer to that question.

From Pallet Town to Cinnabar Island, each locale still features its signature color as per its namesake, but now they come alive with a mix of tones that pop with the kind of vibrancy that we got in Gold/Silver. Individual pallets for each Pokémon look just as good, and it's great to see them rocking more than just one color each. Drenn made excellent use of the GBC's graphical capabilities here.

As a reference point, some of you may remember that Gen 1 was compatible with the Super Gameboy, but it splashed every city/town, trainer, and Pokémon with a meager one color each. Granted, playing any Game Boy game with any color at all was a big deal at the time, but it's unimpressive today, especially when compared to what this hack does.

The Gen 2 UI and sprites look fantastic as well, and I'm glad to see that the grossly blown-up back shots of your in-battle Pokémon have been replaced with their crisp and clean Gen 2 equivalents. These Gen 2 changes are also a great way to bridge the two generations on the same system, and if anything, it now makes Red/Blue look like companion pieces to Gold/Silver, instead of precursors.

Overall, this is arguably the best lens through which the world of Gen 1 can be viewed. From here, I hope to see other fixes to bring it closer to Gen 2, like fixing the game's numerous quirks, like type and damage issues, the behaviors of certain moves, illegal moves (I'm looking at you, Lance), and the list goes on; but those are a whole other matter entirely. Many thanks to Drenn for this fantastic hack!

The Best version of Red, butsemolous2020-12-04Version 1.2

I've beat the game several times already, and each time I found it to be very enjoyable. If I had to choose one issue its that I wish it was compatibile with the gender select and gen 6 typing hacks. Other than that, the game's great, and very nice to look at.

Needs an universal patch.RealGaea2017-07-28Version 1.2

This looks awesome, both versions, both recolors, both everything.

We need to make it accesible for the other languages! Spanish, Italian, French, German, etc.

This gem is a must-have for any classic GB fan.

That's all.

It works perfect in the english rom of Pokemon red.

Is it possible create another patch for the spanish version?

A Better Looking Pokemon Reddewhi1002014-01-16-

Pokemon Red has some absolutely heinous graphics, especially of some pokemons backsprites such as venuasur. Using generation 2 graphics is a huge improvement in the look of the game.

Likewise the full color graphics breathe new life into an aging classic. The color themes are still there for each city, but manifest for example as rooftops instead of essentially coloring the whole screen.

I have encountered no problems whatsoever in running this hack, and highly recommend it to anyone looking to replay Pokemon Red with a fresh set of eyes.
