Name: Final Fantasy III (USA)Hack description
Back when Final Fantasy VI (Final Fantasy III US) was released the game was heavily toned down, censoring graphics and the like. When it was re-released for the Playstation, the graphics were uncensored but toned down script remained. Then came Final Fantasy VI Advance with a newer (though some consider drier) translation, but the color palette and music were altered for the handheld console. Others have made re-translations, such as the great work by RPGOne, Lina Darkstar, and Kwhazit.Screenshots

| The Ultima of FFVI translation-hacks | tsubasaplayer16 | 2022-07-16 | Version 3.06 |
Honestly? This is the single ULTIMATE translation-hack for FFVI. This has, arguably, pretty much everything you could possibly want. Playing though the game itself with the original soundtrack to boot with a retranslation of combining the official translation (the GBA one) while keeping the charm of Woolsey's style is already one hell of a treat to experience, but the reason why I mentioned being a translation-hack is because of the optional add-ons. From bug fixes to adding a soundtrack menu (though this one in particular is redundant for FXPAK Pro users like I am since you can just play .spc files from it, but useful for those who do not possess such a luxury such as a Super Everdrive and such, but very awesome regardless) to uncensoring graphics, to adding descriptions to Rage and Dances, and many more from other hacks being compiled here, this really is the ultimate FFVI translation-hack out there. Plus there's additional text files that tell you what names were switched from the SNES version to the modern names past the GBA version, making it seriously useful for looking up the names for certain stuff when looking things up on wiki sites. I started at 3.04, but it has since been up to 3.06 as of the time of this review and I couldn't think of more things to add barring potential bug fixes and stuff. Give it a go! (This review has been written in part by this translation-hack being played on original hardware.)
| Excellent work | T29 | 2022-04-06 | Version 3.06 |
I didn't play the snes version first because I read that the translation was bad and full of bugs and lacked the improvements that the GBA and PS1 version has. But I found this hack and it actually makes the SNES version better than the others, giving you the original music and graphics without slow loading times and with a better translation, plus bug fixes and add ons.
| A Clean, Professional Way to Play FFVI | squareinc | 2022-02-11 | Version 3.05 |
The patch cleans up the script but isn't arrogant; it fixes instead of trying to add or shoehorn its own thing. The bugfixes are nice as well. It feels like playing the definitive version of the SNES classic.
| Awesome!! | Polargames | 2019-11-03 | Version 2.07a |
This patch has really brought the game to its OG form. I never was big into this game, but the patch has me now wanting to play more to see all of the uncensored stuff in it. Overall its great and a must have. :-D
| A new love for this game | ReggieTheRetrogaminDork | 2019-07-11 | Version 2.04 |
Hello I just did a playthough of FF6 on my FB page (Reginald Entertainment Salad) using this much needed patch. I was using the version that still had the Bolt sCroll typo, but still enjoyed all that was put into this improvement of the game. I loved the subtle changes of everything in this, especially in the dialogue of the main characters. (i.e. Kefka called Celes the B-word) I also loved that the evade stat was fixed along with the darkness status. But anyway I just want to personally thank you for the work involved in making a nearly forgotten classic shine again. I enjoyed recording this version from start to finish and it kinda shows on the finale video. I was clapping at the end not for finishing the game but in honor of those who made this patch so awesome. It was an honor and privilege to not only play FF6 but to play it with the improvements on SNES version versus any of remakes and/or different ports. I like the sound and visual effect that occurs when the party has to battle in the original versus the modern remakes and seeing that this patch doesn't try to modernize that is so much to me. Anyway thank you for the patch and the 36 video playthrough is on my page. Best Wishes and Thank You (Again),
| The BEST version to play! | phantom_with_a_rose | 2018-12-15 | Version 2.01 |
"Final Fantasy VI" (re-named III during its original North American release back in '94) remains as one of my favorite FF titles of all time and this retranslation makes it even better than ever! While the original SNES Ted Woolsey translation was good for its time, it still had plenty of spelling/grammar errors that needed to be fixed. This particular retranslation does EXACTLY that by improving much of the dialogue spoken by the characters, while still keeping the charm of Woolsey's translation. In addition, the 'dash' button (only available in the official PSX and GBA re-releases of the game) has been inserted into this version, which means that you will not need to equip the Sprint Shoes every time you just want to get through a dungeon or town as quickly as possible (this should especially be beneficial for those who are new to RPGs). Sadly, you cannot double-dash once you have bought and equipped the Sprint Shoes (whereas in the PSX and GBA renditions, you could), but this hardly detracts from the overall convenience of having the sprinting feature included from the very beginning (yes, you can also run while in the Magitek Armor at the start of the game). As a bonus, the lyrics in the Opera House performance scene have also been updated to their original GBA counterparts, the censored graphics of certain sprites (e.g. Esper Summons) have been FULLY RESTORED, and the overall storyline, itself, has also been expanded upon a little further, ultimately making this THE "Perfect" version of FF6! Please, PLEASE, do yourself a favor and play this version NOW!!
| Best version of Final Fantasy VI | AcidTango | 2018-06-17 | Version 2.00 |
A long time ago I played Rodimus Primal's fan translation hack of FF IV called Final Fantasy IV Namingway Edition and I considered it the best version of FF IV. And once again Rodimus Primal does another excellent job with this game as well. Final Fantasy VI - Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition has the best script for any version of FF VI and also nothing was censored like what happened to the North American version which means that you get to play the game that is more faithful to the original Japanese version. I highly recommend playing this version of Final Fantasy VI. You will not regret it.
| Awesome | Jediking12 | 2018-02-25 | Version 2.00 |
This is the best hack for Final Fantasy III/VI yet. It fixes everything wrong with the localized US version. One patch that could off been included is the font from the GBA version.
| Final Fantasy VI Restored | kaega2 | 2018-02-24 | Version 2.00 |
Awesome patch. Brings the terminology to the modern Final Fantasy age, corrects censorship, fixes mistranslated lines, but does push the translation to be EXACTLY like the Japanese text. All bug fixes are included, no need to apply multiple patches. Has some extra modifications that are completely optional. The only thing I would like to see included, and this is a minor gripe, is the ability to modify your controls like you can do on the original Japanese rom. I don't think it should be too hard as it looks like the functionality is still in the rom, they just took out the menu item that lets you make the change. Great work! Thank you so much!
| The best script you can get that's true to SNES. | Chronosplit | 2017-06-12 | Version 1.96 |
I really have to hand it to Rodimus Primal. He really knows how to make FFVI feel like it should've been from the very start. The script brings the best out of the original translation by fixing it up and expanding it where needed, even the font itself has been toyed with to bring the best out of it. Every single aspect is spit shined to a polish to the point that even the bugfix patches are curated with care to bring a certain enhanced feel of what you've played before. Nothing sticks out from the norm at all either. Want to play the SNES version in all it's glory? Don't play it unpatched, play this and thank me later.
| As it should be! | mcgeepride | 2016-04-11 | Version 1.85 |
If anybody wants to play Final Fantasy VI for the Snes, there is only one version to play... this is it! The added dialogue brings you much deeper in the world of FF6 and just expands on the great script that Ted Woolsey did. I like that the item and spell names are more in tone with later entries of the series. The Opera scene is where this hack really shines because the creator used the Gba translation and it really works without any timing issues. All the graphics are as they were in the original Japanese version so that means they are uncensored as the name of the hack implies. I would recommend this to any one who wants to play this game for the first time or just wants to revisit one of the best entries in the series. Download now!!
| Very faithful, Highly Recommended! | lexluthermiester | 2016-04-10 | Version 1.8a |
The differences are noticeable, but welcome. The atmosphere and nuance, not to mention very hard work, that Ted Woolsey put into the original US release is intact here. Playing this mod is fun and the expanded story still sucks you in like the original did. The additions introduced by this mod expand upon and refine what had to be left out due to the ROM chip space constraints of the early 90's. I imagine this is very close to the result Ted himself might have produced had the rom afforded more space to work with. The recent updates included in version 1.8a further refine the work to make it even better and a lot of fun to replay! The devs seem to have gone out of their way to keep the atmosphere of the game faithful to Ted's vision. And to that effort, I say Well Done and Thank You! If you are a fan of Final Fantasy 3, this mod will be a welcome expanded trip down memory lane. If you are new to the game this mod could easily be considered the definitive English version! Highly recommended for gamers old and new! PS, I've always admired Ted Woolsey's work. He was given a very unforgiving work environment, tight schedules to work within and yet reproduced masterfully creative and enchanting works anyway. I have always laughed at people who, cluelessly, criticized his efforts. Very few have ever matched the sheer number of titles he localized, nor the quality of his work... I applaud the creator and contributors of this mod for their recognition of Ted's work and for matching such excellent standards! Cheers!
