Hack description

A full scale hack of Final Fantasy, nothing remains but the core programming routines.
It features all new graphics, music, levels, enemies, text, statistics and more. Think
of it as a "Total Conversion" for the NES.

After numerous releases, the hack has come to a state I consider final: All known bugs have been fixed and the gameplay has been polished to the best of my abilities. SRAM files from any versions other than 1.30 or Final will *not* work properly with this release. Sorry, too much has changed.

ADDENDUM:
If you aren't fond of grinding, then you can try this patch for an Easy Mode.

Absolutely Amazing!obscurumlux012015-09-16Version Final 2

This hack is one of the best if not THE best Final Fantasy 1 NES hack out right now!

It is almost a shame this wasn't remade in a different modern 2D engine and sold on Steam. It would likely sell very well if Sliver X and the other team members were willing to do so.

The story seems simple at first glance but digs in deeper the more you explore and talk to people. Secrets are also scattered about if you know how to look for them.

Absolutely everything is redone; EVERYTHING! Even the battle system received an overhaul and the ASM hacking expertise is phenomenal!

I just dug around in the ROM with FFHackster and you absolutely have to admire the attention to detail and organization that went through something like this. This is truly a fantastic sendoff for a classic RPG of the 8-bit era.

Loved this rom hack so much that I made an 'Easy Mode' patch for this just to get more people to try it out!

This is the sequel to 'Dragoon X Omega - Gold Edition' that is also on RHDN; both of these are worthy of your time and you will likely start humming the catchy music themes by the time you finish :)

The Best FF1 Hack Out ThereKlaviaturist2011-03-16-

This patch was my first experience in playing a hacked video game. I have got to say, this is by far the best Final Fantasy hack out there, but is also possibly one of the best hacks in general. None of the original game is left. It's replaced with original artwork, a totally different world map, all new music, etc. Literally none of the original is present.

The storyline takes place sometime after the events from the first game, Dragoon X Omega (a Dragon Warrior hack). The setting is a futuristic, almost apocalypse like world. It's all very Sci-Fi themed, much like the first game, only much darker.

The graphics (considering the engine the game was built from) are pretty nice looking and probably better looking than the original game the hack is based from.

The music is incredibly appropriate for the games dark subject matter. Every track is well written and very much enjoyable on the ears. I guess my only issue with the soundtrack was the repetition. In every battle, even boss battles, the music is the same. The tune in battle is actually pretty good, but when you are grinding levels the music did make things a bit tedious.

Speaking of gameplay, the game plays just like any classic style RPG. You control one character through the game. No one will join you so you don't have to worry about leveling up new characters. You gain PSI (magic essentially) by buying new PSI from stores. Some PSI you will have to find on your own though. Battles are turn based like a traditional RPG. You gain experience from monsters, etc. I did have some issues with the "grinding" of levels in the end of the game. In order to defeat the final boss, the Neverborn, you really need to grind your levels and it gets very tedious. Even worse is that there are two secret bosses that are far more powerful than the final boss. Even at a decent level they will whup you left and right.

As difficult as this game gets in the end (and tedious), the game is still highly interesting and is well worth the time to play through. This is an excellent example of what can truly be done with romhacking. Hopefully another sequel from the author is in the works.

If you don't know it by reputation, DXΩ2 is the Alpha & Omega of NES RPG ROM hacks. Skeptics, believe the hype. SliverX's .ASM talents and Thaddeus's graphic designs make this sequel to the already-groundbreaking DXΩ1 a crowning achievement in ROM-hacking. As for any menu-based RPG though, I do recommend using an emulator with turbo-A and a Speed button for level crunching.

  • Story: Takes place long long after DXΩ1 on a new planet. The story pretty good, and DXΩ1 fans will enjoy the ending.
  • Graphics: Thaddeus's work is beyond reproach. Backgrounds look meticulously made. Some enemy designs look like a nod to H.R. Giger.
  • Sound: Yes, this has all original music! -and it's not irritating chopped-up loops either!
  • Challenge: It is rather challenging, but the battle system has been refined a couple of times since I've played it.
