Database match: Super Mario Bros. (World)Hack description
The aim of the project is to modernize the look of classic Super Mario Bros while remaining within the limits of the original programming and ROM size. There are no ASM hacks and no expanding the ROM--and no mapper! Just brand new pixel art (and a few things borrowed from later Mario games), palette edits, and metatile rearrangement. You can enjoy the original game with a fresh coat of paint, or try combining it with map or gameplay hacks that don't change the graphics too much!Screenshots

I've been aware of this project since the days of PE2000.net, and it's never really been my thing; I like the original graphics in Super Mario Bros., and never cared for the idea of putting graphics from newer games in. The Vapor patch makes this into something wholly unique, however, and is absolutely worth checking out. The tilesets are greatly improved from what I remember, and they work extremely well with the new palettes. World 3 has a beautiful shift in color that flows perfectly from the previous worlds, and I love that the surface of water/lava has a checkerboard pattern. The walls in 8-3 are SO vaporwave, and the underwater section of 8-4 is just something else. To top it all off, the game has a very cool ending! In a world of incredible level hacks, this "mere" coat of paint kept me riveted all the way through!
| Humble but very enjoyable flavor of classic SMB | Alan Vikam | 2023-07-08 | Version 4.4 Vapor |
The vapor flavor is my favorite one, it even has vaporwave music replacing the stage themes. I love it. I'd recommend playing it for the first time blind, because it's one of those things that you can only discover once.
| Not a fan | Ligeia | 2022-11-04 | Version 3.4 |
The hack is really not bad. My issue with it is that using SMB3 sprites feels lazy to me, and it makes the original SMB lose its identity. I still recommend it because the hack is well done, it objectively looks good (color palettes are nicely chosen and Bowser's new sprite look great for instance), and there are obviously many fans of this type of SMB3 reskin, but I'd rather play SMB Resprited instead.
| Flamepanther sets the bar for improvements to original classics | Solgnar | 2022-11-03 | Version 2.0 |
I have been a massive fan of flamepanther since the initial release of SMB DX and later their mod of the SuperGameboy2 In my opinion there is little reason to go back to the original version of SMB. flamepanther brings the esthetics to the next level while keeping the original vibe of the NES Mario releases I am hooked on the 2.0 release but also appreciate the recent improvement of 3.4. You can actually play SMB DX 2.0 on actual SNES hardware via the SD2SNES and project NESted which is truly next level! 3.4 loaded up on SNES via SD2SNS and proj NESted is mad glitched but interesting in and of itself. I dont expect any effort to be placed into resolving such an edge use case of the software and 2.0 works mint none the less. long live flamepanther!!!
| ALL WE NEED FOR THIS GAME MADE BE PERFECT | conexaoretro | 2021-10-28 | Version 3.4 |
Beautiful work! The game was colored, clean, and more attractive. It managed to be better than the original version. The only thing I would remove is the title screen because the original version is cooler. But I perfectly understand that the creator of the patch wanted to self-credit and that is normal. A game that deserves to be recorded on a cartridge to be played forever on our beloved NES!
| A Hack That We Don't Deserve | LadyRoseDi | 2021-06-19 | Version 3.4 |
This is mostly an cosmetics hack, that gives SMB the needed upgrade for the NES. Honest to god, that's all I want in a rom hack for Super Mario Bros. The sprites, the colors, they're all clean, and I love it.
| Cannot recommend. | BlairBear86 | 2021-05-12 | Version 3.4 |
I have minor issues with this hack. The color of the turtles have the same color for their whole body while other enemies are properly colored. The Bowser sprite just looks off to me, the legs are animated but the head just doesn't move at all, which makes him look kinda weird. World 3 which was supposed to have the black background for the night theme, was a light shade of purple instead wtf? I stopped playing after that. Everything looks really nice when you first play it but then questions start to arise with color choices.
| Pretty frickin good. | GlitchyTSP | 2019-04-05 | Version 3.4 |
This hack is perfect for anyone who wants to play the original SMB, there is so many way's that this hack wins out to the original. The graphics are even better than the original, my only complain is that there isn't anything 'new' but it is still a really good time all-around.
| HOW IT OUGHT TO BE PLAYED! | StixsmasterHD | 2018-05-07 | Version 3.4 |
Hey all, I highly recommend this hack for the original game. It brings most of the graphics uptodate for the system its played on making it easier on the eyes overall. I have uploaded a 4k video of me playing it with a wireless ps4 controller on my Android. Admittedly youll notie my skills with the game quickly lacks when I get to about world 4 and beyond. lol.

This hack just shows the game in a new light. Usually I don't like modernized graphics hacks but flamepanther did a great job with this. Just download this an throw out the original.
