Update: scroll don't to bottom of review for updates and corrections. I came across this hack last night as I was going to ask someone to restore the English gen 1 games to match the Japanese counterparts. I played through the Green hack this morning and it is an amazing recreation of the original Japanese Green with some bugs fixed (including some bugs present in Blue). When loaded into Pokémon Stadium 2 PS2 reads it as Pokémon Green and shows the green cartridge icon. One thing that was both a plus and a negative was the text changes. The Raichu trade text has been corrected (the evolving Raichu has always bugged me) and the coffee guy is drunk like in the Japanese games which I feel mixed about as I appreciate the accuracy to the Japanese version but I also feel the coffee text is what belongs there. I did find 2 issues though. In the Green hack Viridian city is the wrong shade of green and the Red hack has the Green game corner icons (Japanese Red has the same icons present in the English red and blue). Hopefully the hacker will fix these issues in a later version as visual accuracy is important to this hack. I haven't tested thoroughly enough to see if any other places had the wrong sgb colors. My lasting impression is I'm so thoroughly impressed I plan on flashing these to some carts and playing them instead of official Red and Blue carts. Hopefully the issues I mentioned will be fixed and we eventually get Blue, Yellow (Japanese version didn't have GBC mode) and Crystal (GS have already been done) restorations for a true Japanese version experience Update: I checked the readme and it said the Viridian City palette was for Green was "optimized" so it was intentional and not a bug. Update: I've contacted the creator of the hack and he says he will look into the slot machine issue with Red. He also says he has published a Japanese Blue English hack but it is absent from ROMhacking.net | |||
