| If you like dry humor, try this out. It's well done. | Uberdubie | 2022-09-12 | Version 1.0.1 |
Comedy is an extremely subjective thing - it must be stated that whether this hack is enjoyable to you or not is almost ENTIRELY up to your own sense of humor, and whether you understand this hack is meant to be a joke from the start. If your sense of humor isn't 'a match' for this rewrite but you still give it a chance with this understanding, I'm confident you'll appreciate the quality of work done and find it amusing regardless. And if you enjoy sarcasm inappropriately placed into ironic situations like I do, you'll LOVE this hack. While some parts are absolute goofiness, much of it is surprisingly very well-written into a cohesive story and consistent tone! You get the idea from the hack's description that the main protagonists are the bad guys - and despite merely changing the dialogue, works a lot better better than I thought it would. While that leads to some priceless moments in the story, I probably enjoyed the minor banter from random NPCs the most. For example, you may come across a random female NPC looking for her husband in one town. Then in the next town - you find a male NPC who fled to the next town just trying to avoid his nagging wife, begging you not to tell her you found him. At times, this made talking to NPCs far more rewarding than before. I took a risk and played this with my wife who never played CT before, and she enjoyed this tremendously. We both laughed frequently thanks to the rewrite, while also enjoying CT as it was meant to be enjoyed. As for me, I always loved CT ever since I first played it as an adolescent in 1995 - and I thoroughly enjoyed this hack just the same.
| Not bad for what it was going for | XModxGodX | 2022-09-12 | Version 1.0.1 |
I have played a fair amount of parody text hacks that are just "how many swear words can I fit into each sentence" and seeing some of the reviews for this hack I assumed this would be the same and didn't play this as a result. I eventually decided to give it a chance and while it's no masterpiece of comedy (it does have its good moments though) it isn't a pointless swearfest. Granted I haven't beaten it so my opinion could potentially change (currently just got the broken masamune blade) but it's certainly a fun way to play the game if you're bored, need a laugh, and/or played Chrono Trigger a ton of times and want to play it again.

I feel like the previous reviews either gave up on this hack too quickly or just have no sense of humor. This hack isn't exactly what I'd call "high-brow" humor, but it's consistently funny, and, in exact opposition to what the other reviews say, surprisingly coherent. The characters may be a bit... deranged, but it's not like they're all over the place. They actually each have defined characteristics, and in some way parody their original counterparts. I find myself chuckling frequently, with the occasional uncontrollable guffaw when something from the original game is parodied perfectly. The whole hack is heavy on parody while also being free to just be nutty when it feels like it. If you remember the original story well, it's fun to see how the hack maker twisted it, making events unfold in a way that is both consistent and nonsensical. With so many spoofs being nothing but utter nonsense, it's almost insulting that a well-made one would be labeled "fragmented and annoying". It just isn't. I hold Chrono Trigger in high regard. It's one of the best RPGs ever made, and certainly in the top three games for the SNES. But that's no reason to get your knickers twisted over it. What's life if you can't occasionally bask in the absurd? This is a good, fun hack, and well worth a look if you want a laugh.
| Just wrong... | lexluthermiester | 2013-12-10 | - |
I'm going to have to agree with TheZunar123. This hack is just not right. The storyline is fragmented and annoying. The main character dialog is needlessly crass, vulgar and teenagerish without much rhyme or reason. The gameplay hasn't been modified much that I can tell, but then I only played it for a few minutes before being so annoyed that I deleted it. This is not the claimed "hilarious parody of epic proportions!". It's just not good.

(Review for version 1) I have to say, injecting humor into a classic game like Chrono Trigger is a very bold move. It can be really good if done right. The problem is that you went overboard. For example, changing Marle into a spoiled brat; that alone made me quit after about 15 minutes into the game. I just couldn't take it anymore. Editing the minor character dialogue is perfectly fine (Chrono's mom is a good example), but having such a huge character change in one of the main protagonists is going too far. You're treading in deadly waters with those kind of changes and quite frankly, you blew it.
