This is a pretty interesting hack that may not have a lot of variety in the environments, but instead, takes one central theme and makes a very cohesive package. As you can see in the screenshots, the worlds are made of a brownish metal, and many of them are set in a harbor at night. The view is lovely, and remains fairly consistent throughout the hack, but you will find yourself going above the clouds for a few levels. What's interesting is the way that they're put together; the shapes made by the platforms and structures have a really cool art to them. My favorite example of this is World 4-3, which forms a sort of skybox or flying walkway structure. You will also find that some exits are a bit hidden, so you'll have to search for the right pipe or a beanstalk, but even if you miss it, you'll have something to warp you back to an earlier point to try again; it's subtle enough to be engaging, but not so much that it's confusing. Even though there are no fights with Bowser, the final stretch is appropriately intense in both gameplay and tone; it was impressively done. Those who hate water levels will be pleased to find none of them here. The game is challenging, and can be beaten without states, but beginner or intermediate players might want to consider them, especially in levels where stars are relentlessly being fired your way. If I have one gripe, it's the chains that you climb; you'll find several areas where you have to climb one and drop to the next, but maybe that's a personal thing, because I've never liked them. Overall, a very solid hack. | |||
