Hack description

This improvement adds a virtual in-game clock displayed on the status bar, along with a day/night cycling system using this clock that tints the palettes (excluding the status bar) in the overworld areas according to the hours. Tint colors and timer speed are easily customisable, everything is explained in the readme and it is easily usable for custom hacks. ASM source is included in the archive.

It can be applied to a normal Link to the Past ROM so that you would play through the whole game with this effect (though it doesn't change any event of the story), it hasn't been tested everywhere but it should work fine.

Good overall, but needs tweaking.ClaudeDixon2021-06-25Version 2.0

Does exactly what it says: Changes palettes depending on time of day. 2 glaring issues though:

1. In situations where the game already had a darker palette, such as the opening with the rain storm or the woods, the game looks too dark when combined with it being night time. It's not unplayable, but it's not great to look at and decreases immersion rather than add to it.

2. Whenever you open and close the map screen, Link defaults back to his original bright palette regardless of in-game time until you enter some indoor area then exit. This is also distracting and breaks immersion rather than add to it.

In its current state it's still worth a playthrough, but it won't replace the original game. With just these 2 issues resolved however, I would whole heartedly say otherwise.

Interesting, but not worth itBlazeHeatnix2015-02-18Version 2.0

As puzzledude said, the effect is a little ruined whenever there is rain, fog, or mist. In those situations, the hack should be turned off. I also would like it better if the music faded out once night rolled around, to make it more like OoT.

Overall, it doesn't really improve the game, in fact I think it makes it less immersive.

Very Good!Dogeritos2015-01-31Version 2.0

I totally recommend this to anyone who wants a slight change in the already amazing scenery of Link to the Past. One of the best hacks I've ever played.

Interesting new featurepuzzledude2014-02-24-

It is to be noted that this is not a standard hack, but rather an ASM feature. It brings the feeling of the day and night cycle into Alttp by manipulating the overworld palette and it is specially recommended to be used with other hacks.

It is also highly adoptable: you can change how fast the time should advance as well as how dark should the palettes be, which is praising.

The only problem I have with this hack is, that it doesn't assume that the original overlays are also making the game dark (rain, fog, dark forest mist). In such occasions the day and night effect should be turned off and the game should be fully bright; since the full-bright in a combination with rain makes it dark enough.

The night palette in a combination with rain, fog or dark forest mist is way to dark (clearly seen in Parallel Worlds, where you start the game in "high darkness" and you don't see the landscape at all). The day and night effect should be turned off, when such a dark overlay occurs.
