Hack description

This was an attempt to make Breath of Fire's character names consistent with later games in the series. However, it is now no longer available on RHDN, and has since been obsoleted by Breath of Fire: War of the Goddess (SNES).

Nice additions, but changes too many thingsBregalad2020-04-10Version 0.9

The item names of Breath of Fires have long confused me, due to a ridiculously short length limit of the SNES original, and this hack does a great job as improve some of them.

Changing names that are recurrent in the series such as Tyr being Myria is a good idea. But all online resources such as forums or walk through will still talk about Tyr.

Changing character's default names, especially when it had to make up their own names because the Japanese original wouldn't fit in 4-letter names, is going a bit too far. All online resources will use the names from the previous translation anyway.

Unfortunately there's also things this hack changes a bit too much. The font is changed for no reason, no big deal, but if it isn't broken why fix it? Now the letters are thin and the space between letters is just getting bigger, what do we gain from this?

I just looked at Breath of Fire II, III, IV and V, and all of them use "Equip". Why does this hack, who claim to improve the consistency with the series, suddenly use "Gear", when the unaltered GBA game uses "Equip"? This hack is full of weird changes like that.

Depending on your tastes, you might either enjoy this hack or not.

Highly necessary retranslation/updated script. A lot of names needed updating for consistency with the series and I really appreciate this hack doing just that. I wouldn't play Breath of Fire 1 for GBA without this.

I used this hack alongside Vivify93's Name Reverter, Bregelad's Sound Restoration and ThegreatBen's Breath of Fire Improved (I patched Sound Restoration, then Name Reverter, then Improved)

Great little non-translationChronosplit2014-05-10-

With the retranslation of BoFII, things ended up named so differently between BoF1 and all other games that I was completely confused as to what item did what thing when playing the games chronologically.

This conversion was sorely needed. My only complaint is there isn't an SNES version so we can enjoy full music and proper colors. Oh well, a small gripe. Especially considering this patch and all the other improvements together make the GBA version the definitive BoF1 game.
