Hack description

Stealth has created a hack that imports Knuckles into Sonic the Hedgehog 1. This is a very advanced hack and includes all of Knuckles moves: Spin Dash, Gliding, Wall climbing, and even a bonus feature which can be accessed by inputting the following codes on the title screen.

*Super Knuckles (once all emeralds are obtained):
B B B B Up Down Left Right
(you'll hear a ring sound if code is implemented correctly)

*Cheat (Start with all emeralds):
B B B B B B Up Down Left Right
(if implemented correctly you should hear the same sound as when you get an extra continue)

The patch is in xdelta format due to the IPS patch being nearly as large as the patched ROM itself. Tested on a ROM in BIN format.

Sonic & Knuckles + Sonic 1 = ?Eldrethor2021-09-10Version 1.1

Ever wondered what it would have been like if Sonic & Knuckles worked with the first Sonic The Hedgehog? This hack answers that question, and it works with flying colors.

For those not in the know, the first Sonic game wasn't compatible with the special S&K cartridge, but this didn't stop rumors from floating around the schoolyard: cheat codes that didn't work, absurd unlocking conditions, you name it.

The hack works as described: you get a fully-working Knuckles in place of Sonic, complete with a brand-new title screen. Spindashes, gliding, and wall-climbing all work beautifully, and the game plays exactly how I imagined it would.

Now you might wonder why someone would play this hack over the newer Sonic Classic Heroes, which does the same thing, but has the added advantage of including Sonic and Tails, a second team of playable characters, Sonic 2 content, level selection, and a save feature. Not that you can't do both, but if you are building a curated library, I'd argue that this hack still has a place today for players who want a more "pure" experience that simulates the look and feel of playing a Sonic 1 cart plugged into a S&K cart, right down to the HUD, and it fits perfectly alongside S&K'ed versions of Sonic 2 and 3.

Overall, a great hack from Stealth that gets the job done, and does it well. Today, Sonic Classic Heroes may offer a lot more, but this hack still holds up if you just want something simpler in your collection.

Odd color... but okOkabe Zero-Link2021-09-10Version 1.1

The color is really odd (due to sonic 1's color palette, I guess), but otherwise, really good. But might as well just play the Christian Whitehead version

I remember the rumor back in the schoolyard. If you plugged Sonic 1 into Sonic & Knuckles and entered a code (that nobody could seem to remember), you could play as Knuckles in Sonic 1. Well, the rumor was false, but this is not. Playing as Knuckles in the first game, which is much more platforming focused, is great fun! I'd recommend this for fans of Sonic.

This hack doesn't have too much in the way of surprises, but it doesn't need them; it's not that kind of hack. All it needs to be is Knuckles in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and it delivers! This could cause some potential problems, given that Knuckles doesn't jump as high as Sonic, for whom the levels were built, but everything works just fine. I'd always thought that Sonic & Knuckles should work with the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and thanks to this hack, it does!
