| Road To A Better ProtoMan X1 | SwiftlyTony360 | 2023-03-11 | Version 1.2.1 |
Introduction Now that I've completed X1 Proto Edition from beginning to end, I can now add my input. A functional, playable Protoman! While it's functional, I have noticed along the way a number of issues that needs to be worked on as well as a number of areas that could be improved upon on. I will address them below: Game-play Review There has been a significant increased in difficulty that I wasn't expecting. I thought I would be playing an equivalent version of Megaman X but with Protoman, but it was actually tougher. It was tough because there were lower hp points and no armor upgrade to reduce damage. So in order to beat a level or game, you need to focus greatly on dodging and make great use of the sub-tanks. In order to combat this, you are given greater blast attacks to have a fighting chance, which is really cool. The color palettes on his armor and his power-ups have been properly colored to not give too much saturation or too little, so it feels authentic to playing as X. Writing Review The narrative being told here has been decent. I've noticed that Dr. Light, Sigma and everyone else is talking to Protoman like a character rather than a placeholder for X. It would help to differentiate between X and Protoman dialog texts, so we could get more of his back-story. The dialog with Protoman should have consistent text colors. Protoman texts should have a Red Tint or Gold Tint to differentiate him and the others. Also, multiple spelling and grammar issues that still needs to be addressed and corrected. Suggestions Having the Protoman entrance whistle whenever he is going to start the level would be great. When using the Level 3 Buster Shield Mode, it causes the Level 1 Buster Shot to turn into a glitchy blue blast. If possible to correct this, however if not then that's fine it's not a big deal. To keep consistent with X2 and X3 having the special weapon charge attack would be ideal. Conclusion After reviewing this, I believe this is a great Protoman experience so far, but it has so much room for improvement. The difficulty of this hack is targeted more for veteran players in order to complete the game. I recommend this for anyone who wishes to try out the ProtoMan 21XX experience. Hopefully one day we will be one step closer to getting a greater version of Protoman in the future.
| For the original MMX fans | aorin1 | 2023-03-07 | Version 1.2.1 |
If you've played X enough to know the game back to back, this modification is worth for a replay, the author took the effort in order to properly integrate Protoman into it in a way that changes the experience enough. Be aware that while there are a few spots that this version can be a bit easier, in others it's noticeably harder, but manageable for the seasoned X player.
| Looks good but bad changes | robanoexe | 2022-02-10 | Version 1.2.1 |
Pretty cool aesthetics but for some ungodly reason the author of this patch decided to make Protoman take crazy damage compared to MMX. The last boss can 2 shot you at full health with all upgrades. MMX is already a challenging game and it being harder caught me off guard! That being said, if a hard game is what you're looking for with the legendary Protoman as the star then this will be a good time.

Mega Man X is just a classic. But in an alternate universe we have the Proto version. What if X never rose but the infamous prototype did instead? This is a fun and solid style to the original and dare I say, a little better! I had fun playing as Protoman taking it to the Mavericks! The dialog was changed to work with the source material, the picture of X is nicely replaced with Protoman, there is only three power upgrades, but thry do work well even the Prototype shield too that protects and deflects! I would easily recommend this. Just remember, read the read me first before you patch! This has been updated since then! Now if this could be done to the X 2 and X 3 I would be very interested!
| A fun, yet unbalanced experience. | ItsRainingGravy | 2014-02-20 | - |
Protoman 21XX does exactly what it says, with very little changes to the actual gameplay outside of Mega Man X becoming Protoman (and a few minor dialogue edits). This provides a fresh and unique feel for diehard Mega Man X fans, and it is quite a thrilling experience. However, there are a few very glaring flaws. The first of which, despite Protoman's lower health, his buster makes the game ridiculously easy to beat. His shots can tear through even the toughest enemies, AND bosses, without needing to ever use any of the other weapons in the game. This leaves an unsatisfactory taste to players that wanted an equivalent amount or more difficulty added to the game (such as myself), though players who wanted an easier Mega Man X experience probably won't complain as much. The second glaring flaw is the dialogue boxes. Grammar needs to be worked on, and for some dialogue boxes, the dialogue is cut off at the very top. Protoman 21XX shows that even simple edits such as changing the base stats and/or moves of the main character can provide a totally new and fun experience for a timeless classic, though it also shows that sometimes overzealous changes can also yield some unsatisfactory results in certain areas.

There are a few key changes here that fundamentally alter the game play. The result is a markedly more strategic game. The game crashed on me at the close of the intro stage (text was running outside the box and Protoman's lips kept moving after it closed). Needs work, but could go down as one of the great, simple hacks.
