Hack description

A common misconception is that because Seiken Densetsu 2 supports up to 3 characters in your party and the game's predecessor supported 3 simultaneous human players with a multi-tap, that Seiken Densetsu 3 does as well.

Unfortunately, this is not the case and despite having 3 available characters only 2 were controllable, leaving the 3rd player up to the AI to control.

This patch remedies that and allows the 3rd player to be controlled by a human on a controller for the first time. Simply press start on the 3rd controller and away you go.

*Please note that this patch only works on a ROM with a header!

Followup for bug-fixingWeretigerRei2011-12-09-

As the previous reviewer wrote theres an issue with this patch on the ghost ship. Here is an excerpt from the Gamespot forums about what happened to them. Posting this so that this might be bugfixed. Oh and yes i do reccommend this.

I actually found a bug in the patch the other night.

It happened on the "ghost ship" part. Player 1 was controlling Hawk, Player 2 had Lise, Player 3 had Carlie.

Hawk got removed by the curse story event. Lise and Carlie continued under the control of Player 2 and 3, and went up against the boss. Lise died. This left just Carlie under the control of Player 3.

Player 3/Carlie revived Lise. Lise returned to life, but no one could control her - neither Player 1 nor Player 2 could enter in and take control, and Player 3 could not switch from Carlie to Lise. We were all jamming buttons, and every now and then Lise would randomly move around for about 1 second, and then stop again.

I think what happened is that Player 1 should have taken over Carlie when Hawk got removed by the curse, but wasn't able to do so because of the unexpected presence of Player 3. Likewise, Player 2 should have taken over Carlie when Lise died, but again encountered an unplanned for Player 3 already in control. When Lise was revived, the game had no idea what the heck was going on and couldn't figure out who should be controlling what.

Reviewing v1.0

While the first Seiken Densetsu appeared on English speaking shores as 'Final Fantasy Adventure' (Gameboy) was a single-player jaunt, the famous 'Secret of Mana' was a three player action RPG that no doubt got many people to buy a multi-tap for their SNES just so they could take advantage of the full cast.

It would seem a reasonable bet that the sequel, appearing on the same system, would sport similar features but this was not the case; the vanilla SD3 was only 2 player. Obviously, this hack corrects that.

However, as handy as the hack is, it seems to have been given little continuing attention by the original author in the two and a half years since it was uploaded. Unlike FuSoYa's 2 player hack for Secret of Evermore, which FuSoYa has been regularly updating when errors crop up, this patch remains the same without any follow up work from Parlance.

Someone on the Gamespot forums has reported an error during the Ghost Ship stage where the coding that drops out a PC temporarily doesn't know how to cope with three controllers. I haven't been able to confirm the error myself but I attempted to alert Parlance to this report some time ago through the e-mail given in the readme and have yet to receive a response. Until Parlance takes notice or someone makes an addendum, if this bug affects you the best workaround is probably to just tackle the Ghost Ship with only P1 and P2's controllers to avoid the player input protocol kerfuffle.

This is a good hack, one that many will appreciate. It is unfortunate that for the moment the author has been less thorough with overseeing the integration of their code than FuSoYa has with his comparable SoE multiplayer hack (even though the first update for that took 4 years).
