Hack description

JonBound: Dark Future is one of the first full-length EarthBound hacks released. While simplistic by today's standards, JonBound was done before the days of map and compressed graphics editing and was revolutionary for its time. It was also pretty much made up on the spot, with no real plan - just an accumulation of random ideas and plot threads gleaned from a forum topic, and tied together with minty dental floss. It generally follows the EarthBound story line (if not the plot) in a new scenario with new characters and enemies.

A good hackBouboule2020-08-05Version 2.0

A little big hack who don't change everything, but always comfortable to play. There are some bugs, but nothing very annoying. (Sanctuary hehe)

What was hacked: (If you wanna know)

  • Sprites
  • dialogues
  • enemies
  • objects

Either way, it's very funny to re-discover EarthBound with this hack :)

JonBound should have been on Romhacking.net for years. Being posted here is just a correction of an unfortunate oversight.

The description of the hack is on the spot. It's a random amalgamation of ideas, whims and in-jokes from a bygone era, not all of which will make sense or be funny now. But the hack is still highly amusing, a real personal piece of work, sloppy but endearing because of the sloppiness. Jonbound, though, has the historical value of being the first major Earthbound romhack to be released, an unofficial starting point for a thriving fan community. It deserves to be played for the same reasons the old FFV translation deserves to be played: not only is it a window into the past, but it's a heck of a good time too.
