Hack description

A quick hack I worked on. Made on behalf of those who have played CV Adventure and hated it due to certain drawbacks. Namely, the inability to take a hit without losing your Whips power. Also, the default speed of Christopher. I believe those who have played the game enough will love these changes. Perhaps if the game had been made in this fashion originally there may of been less neigh-sayers of this game.

There is also a patch which works for the color version of Castlevania Adventure which is found in Konami GB Collection Vol. 1.

Graphical glitches and unstable performance1HomoErectus12020-05-11Version 1.0

The patch not only increases speed of the hero and keeps his whip, but also adds minor but frequent graphical glitches (blinking, twitching) and makes game performance unstable: significant slowdowns, when there are many sprites on the screen, and speed-ups, when there are few of them. This frequent changes of speed make the game harder and unpleasant. Maybe the fixes are good, but I don't whant them at this price, which ruined the game-expirience.

P.S. I consider the default speed of the hero to be appropriate. P.P.S. I use Retroarch + Gambatte core and Retroarch + MGBA core.

Makes a slog of a game bearabletimeisup2020-04-23Version 1.0

Castlevania: The Adventure (AKA Dracula Densetsu in Japan) for the Gameboy is a terrible slog of a game. A bore and a chore. Nearly unplayable with it's many caveats. This patch fixes the biggies: speed and whip downgrade. Now the game is playable, better balanced difficultly and atleast reasonably enjoyable as a result.

Still too far removed from the NES Castlevania's to be really good and it's definitely not elevated to classic level by any means. Super Mario Land was how to do Gameboy adaptations of NES games right. One thing I didn't like (much like the Super Mario Land 2 DX patch) was changing some of the items to look like their NES counterparts. Part of the charm for GB versions to me is that some items were different. Hearts give energy, cross makes you invincible and coins rather than money bags were points. The worst was the hearts were changed to what I suppose was meant to be turkey legs but looks like apples on GB graphics. The GBC version doesn't help since they are still red just like hearts.

Small gripe, the only way to play or even tolerate this game is with this patch. Well done.

An Absolute Must-Have!hamguy2015-12-05Version 1.0

This patch makes Christopher Belmont (your character) move at a far more appropriate speed. Without the patch, he is so slow that many parts of the game (especially Level 3) are near impossible. Speeding him up does decrease the difficulty, but only to the same level as, say, Castlevania III. It does not make the game "too easy" by any means. For this reason alone, I highly recommend the patch.

That's not all, however. You also get to KEEP your whip power. Without the patch, if you get hit at all, the game becomes near impossible, because you lose your upgraded whip. With the patch, you can get hit and still fire your projectiles. Again, as with the speed modification, it decreases the difficulty, but to a far more reasonable level.

I can't recommend the patch enough. My only complaint, and it's minor, is that hearts (used to restore small amounts of health) were changed to potroasts. This fits with the rest of the Castlevania games, but with Castlevania: The Adventure being for Game Boy, all the graphics are small, and so the potroasts end up looking more like small blobs than anything else. Still, you probably won't even notice, since there are hardly any of them in the game to begin with.

This patch has, for me, turned a barely-playable, near-torturous game into a fun, fair, playable experience!
