Hack description

Toad's Treasure Quest is my latest SMB 1 romhack. The foundation of this romhack is what makes it special and very fun to play. A fellow romhacker, Googie, put together a rom containing hacks from various open-source Japanese SMB hacks. He then changed all the GFX and sent me the file for a collaboration project. That project ended up dieing unfortunately. But after a couple months, I found myself with some free time and decided to make a new SMB hack using this incredible hack as a starting point.

This hack contained new music, new GFX, conveyor belts, new lead character animations and upside down pipes/piranha plants. None of the levels were actually changed though. So I loaded up SMB Utility and went to town. I created 16 original levels making sure to utilize these cool new features. This romhack is definitely easier than my previous SMB Bowser's Jumping Challenge and the levels flow much more smoothly.

The story involves how Toad came to posses all those useful items in SMB3. In this hack, you search for those warp flutes. Yes, I know Toad doesn't actually give you those flutes in SMB3. Just pretend he finds em and intends on giving them to Mario, but then Toad trips on a Goomba and drops the flutes which then get stolen by Bowser's henchmen.

Just a great ideaTeeporage7772017-12-22Version 1.3

This hack is so cool. Firstly, I love toad. Second, this hack has a cool story line. Gather the items so you can give them to Mario during his journey throughout SMB3. The graphics are sick. The music is awesome and it utilizes moving blocks. The level design was awesome. Also the level design is a good example as to what I need to do to my SMB hacks.

Which is to just worry more about the core level design and keep in mind what a player would think is really fun. Not what I personally like. This hack conquered that. All in all a great hack starring my favorite Mario character. I surely recommend this hack. A shinning gem for sure.

This is an excellent hack with a great example of layered difficulty. In the earlier stages, there will usually be 2 paths, one of which requires a lot more skill to traverse. By no means do you have to take the harder path, but it provides a neat challenge for Mario experts. The level design puts you in some very tricky situations, many of which teach you a lot about how the Super Mario Bros. engine actually works. Most of all, the challenges are engaging; new conveyor blocks have been added, and there are a ton of great things that you can do with them. It becomes very challenging at the end, but just when it starts to become overwhelming, it ends.

The visuals are really neat; most of it has an Arabian nightscape type of aesthetic, and Toad looks really good against them. The enemies have been changed to varying degrees, but they all look great, too. There's also a new song that replaces the old overworld music, and it's fantastic! If I have a gripe it's that only that song is new, and you don't hear it as often as I'd have liked, but I feel like a jerk complaining about new content, just because there isn't more of it, so take that as you will. For anyone looking for a cool hack to take their Mario skills to the next level, this is one of my highest recommendations.
