Hack description

This hack is the combination of three individual hacks.
It was created to be the ultimate NES remake of a classic game.

The original palette has been utilized and the layout of the map is exactly as the original. The only exception is the room where you fight Ridley. To reduce flicker (as much as possible) I had to place Ridley above the doors.

I do not claim any credit for the actual content - only for the hard work of making it all work together.

All credits go to the below listed hacks and their individual authors:

The essential map + saving... oh and graphical overhaul if you want thatpocket2023-04-20Version 1.0

I like the orignal Metroid. I like it a lot. I prefer to play the original Metroid over Zero Mission. If I want to play a remake of the original Metroid but with a few new mechanics, I'll just play Super Metroid. Zero Mission is just a lesser Super Metroid. Metroid for the NES is a completely different game from Super Metroid, and still worth playing.

I understand the lack of a map is frustrating though. I've beaten the game without a map. I don't need to do it again. Nor do I want to input a password to continue my progress. There are, thankfully, hacks that add both a mini map and Sram saving into the original Metroid. I have not played the original Metroid without them since they released Metroid for 30 cents on the Wii U at launch. I recommend everyone do the same.

This hack, has the mini map and saving rolled into it. You may think the map could make the explolration pointless, but it does not tell you where items are, or where you've been. The most it gives away is the location of bosses, and that there may be a way to bomb the floor or walls and reach hidden areas. It does not completely break exploration or render it pointless.

The other thing this game does is overhaul the graphics.

Now, normally, I don't like when hacks change the graphics unless they're making a completely new game, like Metroid Rogue Dawn. You really have to knock it out of the park if you're going to mess with the games graphics in a QOL hack or a simple graphics hack... and you know, I think this hack actually did it pretty nicely. A lot of static tiles are animated now, making Zebes feel more alive, but no less strange and isolated, very alien... And it makes Samus, Ridley, and Kraid, better match their modern appearances. . I suppose if I would suggest anything, it would be an optiona patch so that Ridley looks closer to his crazy blue xenomrph dragon appearance from the instruction manual, and Kraid be that yellow dinosaur with the green mane, just a little better looking than the base game, and Samus look closer to her artwork from the famicom version, with the red boots and hand. I'm fond of those off beat designs and would have preferred we stick closer to those, just with better art style.

I think that all you need is Sram + Saving. But if you're playing the NES and you're looking for better graphics, well first of all I think you're playing the wrong system... but that's besides the point. I think you'll do very well to try this hack out, since there isn't better looking graphics hack for Metroid than this one.

I played this on a real NES using an everdrive N8 pro. I encountered one issue where certain enemies would freeze and their graphics would turn into missiles... but then I changed the rom I patched to the PRG0 one and it worked a lot better. The only issue I encountered was the sea horse enemies not shooting fireballs, but when I reset my game, they were shooting fireballs again. There was not much slowdown either.

Makes Metroid 1 finally worth playingSupergamerguy2021-07-02Version 1.0

This hack introduced me to the wonderful franchise that is Metroid. I'd always been mildly curious to give the series a shot, and wanted to play all of the 2D games in release order, but never committed to doing so because of all the problems the original NES game had. But this hack fixes so much of that! The biggest additions were the ability to beam stack and an in-game map. The in-game map helped me so, so much when trying to figure out where I should go next, and the beam stacking really helped out in the latter half of the game against the stronger enemies and some of Mother Brain's attack. And the new graphics made the already vastly improved experience even better! Now that the game looks and plays great, I can finally recommend it to anybody who hasn't yet given NEStroid a try.

I finally finished Metroidvlike2party2020-08-08Version 1.0

Before I never have any interest to play Nes Metroid. The main character sprite is not attractive. Even it's a classic in a lot of people's eyes, it age badly. This Hacks make a lot of change. Samus, enemy, main screen and background sprite all have a nice update. Make me start from begin to play this game till it end! And also go for second round for that less than an hour ending! :) Nice job dACE and all the order three authors, thanks!

Get Metroid HD, it's the ideal way to use this hack and play Metroid.eskimo442020-04-08Version Metroid HD

As the base hack (actually it's mOTHER+99, but that's just an update to this) for Metroid HD I used this in conjunction with the Metroid HD texture pack. These two things combined IMO is the definitive Nestroid experience in 2020. Unfortunately Aclectico and company's great work isn't represented here on the hacks page but can be easily found in the forums or on Metroid Construction: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=26811.msg362529#msg362529 http://www.metroidconstruction.com/hack.php?id=381

It requires the Mesen emulator to work but setting up Metroid HD is a breeze, just follow the instructions from the romhacking forum post linked above and let Mesen do the work applying the patch and textures. All you need is a clean rom, the emulator, and the texture pack as it includes this patch. While using Mesen i found overclocking beneficial, i just used the example of "400" given in the emulation option for overclocking and the game ran as beautifully as it looked. It was largely a flawless experience with next to no glitches, and the minor ones i experienced are likely endemic of the original game.

It was great to play the original Metroid again except this time I didn't have to farm constantly nor was I lost as the health refresh, auto map, and enhanced graphics made navigation much quicker and easier. I am very thankful to all of the effort these many wonderful people have put into making Metroid a classic that holds up in 2020. All the folks behind this patch, Metroid HD, and Mesen should be very proud as no Metroid fan should hesitate to enjoy this new version of an old experience that without these additions is IMO a poorly aged game. If any of you talented folks who've done work on making this all possible see this I offer you a sincere Thank You.

A definitive upgrade to a classic gameMattKimura2018-05-12Version 1.0

This hack combines so much good hacks into one project, making it feel like an updated Metroid game. Easily recommended to newcomers of the game. There's a way to save the game manually however.

To save, pause the game and then press UP + A on the second controller.

This way you won't have to commit suicide just to save the game. The save feature alone is a massive upgrade from the original since you don't have to grind for health anymore when continuing the game.

The greatest Metroid hack, but can be improved with these extra hacksFateForWindows2017-02-13Version 1.0

This is one of the best romhacks I've played. I found it fun and definitely an improvement but it could have a few extra patches applied:

  • Metroid Automap by Parasyte so that you don't have to pause the game every time you want to check the map.
  • Metroid Walljump, also by Parasyte since it's a neat feature.
  • Metroid99 by Maximum Potion. Please.

Desperately needs a full health hackbgrunge2016-09-12Version 1.0

While this is the (as of yet) penultimate version of the original Metroid game due to its host of improvements, it still has some issues, the most glaring being the fact that the player still starts with 30 health and must farm to fill up the energy tanks every time the player dies and continues. This is a super punishing mechanic, given the scarcity of enemy energy drops and that there are no energy refill points, like in Super Metroid. The integration of the Metroid99 hack or implementation of the same functionality would make this a near perfect and absolutely mandatory hack for all NES Metroid players to have.

Excelent hack, but only two things missing would make it a lot better...Tsukiyomaru02014-07-08-

It's one of the best Metroid hacks there is, but only two things could have been added to make it a LOT better.

1. A Save Station. Could be a room with a different Chozo Statue that triggers the Continue/Save prompt or even better: A floppy disc icon could appear in the corner of the screen to show that the game has been saved when going up or down elevators!

2. Starting Energy = Max Energy. One of the WORST things about the first Metroid is how it forces you to farm from health as soon as you choose to continue your game. Perhaps in future we could see this dealt with.

One of the greats!darkanx2014-05-03-

This compilation brings together some of the best hacks ever made, for one of the greatest games ever made. Does more really need to be said?

Great patch for those looking to make their own hack.mrrichard9992014-04-30-

This is the perfect patch for those looking to start their own hack. You get the best of each hack included into this combined one! If you plan on doing your own hack this is where you should start!
