Play it right now, there's so much content, it can keep you entertained for several hours, it's a goddamn masterpiece. Plus, the save function is extremely handy.
| Impressive, but... | alzen | 2023-05-10 | Version Rev 2B |
I totally recommend this hack. Cannot even imagine how much work and knowledge went into this one. One thing i did not like was level design, the further into game the worse. I was happy everytime we got a level inspired by a mario 3 original level as i was sure about quality. Yet the hack overall is really impressive.
| What can I say? | InAnotherCastle | 2022-08-19 | Version Rev 2B |
It lives up the hype. Simply put. Playing this feels like finding out there was a SMB3 sequel that I was unaware of. I'm loving the new levels and design, enemies, mechanics, music. Small touches and large. A very impressive and heartfelt homage. Also appreciated is the save function and the fact that it works on real hardware (TKROM) boards.
| This hack could really be a mainline Mario game. It's that good! | isoacc | 2021-12-01 | Version Rev 2B |
I just recently finished this hack (well not the secret pipe worlds yet) and I enjoyed it all the way through. It was like playing a way better SMB3. The worlds felt somewhat challenging and clever, but not to the point where they would get overly frustrating. Getting all the star coins was fun. Some of them were tricky, but I still pushed on as none of them were difficult to find or get if you used some perseverance. You'd have to do some basic Mario trick about every time. As for new mechanics, you have Yoshi in a SMB3 setting. He's still the same Yoshi that will eat enemies. He's not a power up you find in a block. You find him sitting in the stage and he doesn't carry over to others. I think that's a good compromise as it would make the game a lot easier if you could take him anywhere. Then there's the new switches. Switch doors and coin snake switches are ported over from Mario World. The other one is the '!' switch. It will typically raise a pipe up from the ground somewhere in the stage. However, it can also be used to show blocks and turn on the lights in spooky ghost stages for a limited time. Lots of good puzzles and gameplay with all of these. The gravity mechanic is a lot of fun and adds some weird, trippy challenges to the game. It can be annoying though sometimes. There aren't any signs or warnings when the gravity is going to flip. This can lead to deaths or confusion about where to go next. The gravity not working or missing the trigger once lead me to a soft lock. Still I think it's a good addition all whole. The new power ups are good and all have their place. Except for the rabbit ears (from SML2). I don't think they are distinct enough from the raccoon suit. They are simply a worse version. With the raccoon suit you can float and fly. The rabbit you can only float. It is still useful in a pinch though. The boomerang suit doesn't appear until later stages which is good as it can be overpowered. It can kill about anything (even thwomps). It's limited to two boomerangs on screen though so it's balanced. One minor nitpick (like really, really, really minor) with the penguin suit power up graphic. IMO it looks like a ghoul almost. Doesn't really fit into the theme of the other suits. (I actually made a simple graphic hack to make it look more like a penguin and Mario-like. If I figure out how make IPS patches I could maybe upload it here if there's interest and it's OK with the author.) The difficulty is balanced very well. If you want to simply beat the game this hack will be on par with SMB3. The bosses may be a bit more challenging mechanics wise, but nothing too terrible. If you want something tougher do the optional secret worlds and the new challenges after you beat the game. It's only as hard as you want it to be for the most part. As for bugs, I had the gravity soft lock mentioned before. Enemies and stage tiles would glitch out graphically a few times. Enemies would sometimes disappear from the screen or not spawn. These two were only cosmetic though didn't break gameplay or anything. Overall, this is a great hack that I think any Mario fan would love. Has many different challenges and features (many more I didn't even mention in this review). It caters to a wide range of skill levels. You'll find something you'll like for sure. Play this hack!
| The best ROMHack ever made | Supergamerguy | 2020-12-07 | Version Rev 2B |
This game is my favorite romhack of all time. There's so much to cover here: new levels, new music, new graphics, new mechanics, new EVERYTHING! This game is one of the best tributes to any series ever. Worlds based on Mario 1, 2 (USA), World, Land, Land 2, Sunshine, and more, all beautifully crafted and well thought out to provide one of the best game experiences ever. Extra content is everywhere as well, with new collectables and post-game additions that add so much more playability and replayabilty to round out an almost perfect experience. I can't gush enough about this hack in words, only give it the highest recommendation I have ever given any hack (even above my own). PLAY THIS GAME.
| Theres a reason this has been called the best Super Mario Bros 3 hack ever. | hdofu | 2020-11-02 | Version Rev 2B |
This hack isn't just amazing because of what it brings to Super Mario Bros, it literally transforms it into an entirely new game. Captain Southbird broke new ground in understanding the code of Super Mario Bros 3 and in addition made this homage to the Super Mario series as a whole. New bosses, bonus modes, New midis, power ups... it's hard to actually cover everything this hack does as it's so extensive. If you love Super Mario Bros 3 this is a must play, if you love the Mario series in any capacity this is a must play.
| The best SMB3 hack there is to date | j1ggy | 2020-08-26 | Version Rev 2B |
Such an amazing, must play game. While I'm normally not a fan of games that add new elements to a game to take it away from that "canon" feel, this game does it in a way that makes it true to Mario games as a whole. Being able to re-enter levels for star coins, being able to save, having all those future game characteristics like Yoshi and ghost houses... oh man, simply superb. Despite not being official, this is one of my favorite Mario games of all-time. If I had any complaints, I'd like to see an update address some of the slow downs of having too many enemies on the screen. Not only does it slow the game down, it affects their functionality as well. On more than one occasion I've had a turtle shell move right through flickering enemies without hitting them. There are also halfway point spawn points that place you right beside an enemy. If you're not prepared to jump, you'll die almost as fast as you appear. I would give this game 10/10 if the issues with it were solved. Overall, 8.9/10.
| Mario 3 Megamix! 10/10 | diablo666 | 2020-04-26 | Version Rev 2B |
Sounds very strong, doesn't it? Well, with this hack, the dive into 8-bit hacks began. I used to hate them... and for NOTHING! But we got distracted, review time! Complexity of game. The levels are made well, efficiently. The complexity is decent, there are no disappointments. It slowly increases, but in some levels-add sharply pepper, so you do not relax. New enemies adorn the levels from "other parts and Mario games". They were prescribed high-quality AI, and some of them were made even more cunning than their originals. And there are enemies who came out of the 3D game Mario, they were remade in the Dimake version. But did they remain interesting? YES, definitely The worlds are a reference TO another Mario game. I have noticed at least three games that I know, but I think others will notice more here. Level maps. The cards represent the "game" on which the world is based. There are still separate worlds. Hub World, zero world. But 8 world is a collection of levels - the most complex character, or rather - the most peaks or difficult decisions in Mario games. The hub World - I won't say where it came from, but the Zero world - is unique in its own way. An atmosphere of horror and despondency. Scary, uhhh :-) New ability. Some are original, but some are new. The penguin costume is a fast speed of moving through the water, ice shots and sliding. Boomerangs are clear enough. But I keep them, because they are a special thing. (What it does will shock some people) Other chips from other games. Pull items, coin snake, dig up sand... I've seen at least one of these games (SMW and Mario 2 USA). Maybe some of the chips I do not know from other games, but I will say this: "well combined and gives the atmosphere." The graphics mostly predominate from Mario 3, but there are other solutions from other games, but mostly - graphics - Mario 3. New zone: "The haunted house." This is from an older version of the game, but the fact that it is neatly inserted and it is diverse is worthy of respect. The music is different here, there is a bit of original music, there is a mix of other games. It's hard to MIX music for Mario 3, but they did. We did our best (although some of them sound worse than the original tracks) New Bonus games. There are some that parody the "bonus World of the original", an updated card game, and there is a reference to Mario Bros (where we collect keys) Saving to a battery. Coins, levels, world - it saves your progress well. Don't worry about SAVESTATES anymore. Different characters are playable. It's a pity that their functions are the same, but the fact that there are several of them is even interesting. Easter egg. There is a "slot machine" in one of the levels. It reminded me of a pirate game with Fortran. A decent Easter egg. Pirates, you are not forgotten. Variety of bosses. There are new bosses, some even have a different AI. ENTER the same world and level. To search for coins and discover even more tricks of this hack. Search for special coins. Does not disappoint than one hack. Why do I say that? And because searching for them-by studying the game - is a rather unusual way to involve them in the game process. Without bugs and glitches, this hack-of course will not go away, BUT it does not interfere. (Just in case-I'll rewrite the hack, maybe I messed up something) Conclusion: I RECOMMEND it to EVERYONE. Reasons: this hack is interesting to play NOT only for me, but also to arrange tests with friends. We take 8-16 friends-condition (no deaths, a lot of coins, speed, etc.). And it is also a special nostalgic note, because after a while, returning to it, it is played as interesting as it was then. IF YOU WERE LOOKING FOR AN EXCELLENT HACK, THIS IS IT! (Rank: EXCELLENT!)
| nice | pleasejust | 2020-04-24 | Version Rev 2B |
This hack eventually does things I didn't think were really possible with the NES. The only thing I found annoying was some of the music and especially the world 1 overworld music. It's very annoying. Otherwise pretty good.
| This game sucks....YOU IN!! | Gamma V | 2018-06-16 | Version Rev 2B |
I just HAD to do that little fake-out in the title of this review as that's exactly what this game does. It sucks you in. You just wanna keep playing to see what level/game will be referenced next, or what the next more original level will be like. The first time I played this, I tried doing a blind LP, but lost track of time because of how much I enjoyed myself, so I ended up waiting and LPing it after I had beaten the game for the first time. By far, the biggest draw for me was the difficulty level. Unlike a majority of high-ranking ROM hacks, this game's difficulty is reasonable. It's more in line with the difficulty of official Mario games in that it's challenging without being frustrating. That may just be a side-effect of so many levels being based on those of official games, but it's definitely appreciated and really contributes to the addictive nature of the game.
| Love this! | Jabem | 2017-08-07 | Version Rev 2B |
This is the absolute best Mario Hack I've ever seen. So much so I probably have over 100 hours trying to beat it's speedrunning record. If I had one criticism, it would be that the lag gets oppressive in a couple sections, but that's totally worth it to take the magical journey through decades of Mario in the format of SMB3.
| wow!!! | Teeporage777 | 2017-07-09 | Version Rev 2B |
When I first started collecting hacks this one showed up a lot. I never thought to much of it side that I would get it someday for the collection. Then one day I said screw it. After two seconds of seeing the title screen I knew it was going to be one of the best hacks ever made. I was no wrong. I was so happy I got it. Choose between Mario or Luigi or even (my personal favorite) toad. All new worlds and levels and graphics. Not to mention on world for I believe you can ride Yoshi...RIDE YOSHI!!!! A huge feat for a smb3 hack for sure. New power ups and some levels even had reverse gravity. This hack also has a star road. Southbird is a legend and I love this hack. This game has perfect difficulty and awesome enemies. I recommend this hack to literally anyone. One of the best hacks ever and will not disappoint you. This hack was disassembled and reassembled to Southbird's liking and its truly a masterpiece. Do not hesitate to play this.
| 9.2/10 | RyanTNT | 2016-11-09 | Version Rev 2B |
(Rev 2B) This game is a must have for people after they have completed SMB3, and is better than the original game. The mechanics SMB3M has to offer are things that the developers back in the day would only dream of. This game has some features that aren't very good, however. Some daredevil levels and even regular levels spike in difficulty, and I get to the point where I have to use save-states to complete some levels. If the game could be a little easier, then I would give this a 9.8/10. Some graphics get messed up from time to time when I go back, and a small amount of enemy sprites could use a little revamp. This game lacks the easy-ness during the end so regular players can't complete it, but it is awesome when it comes to its presentation. I hope you find this useful if you do another update to the game. Score: 9.2/10
| Super Mario Museum | Mother Kojiro | 2016-05-03 | Version 1.0 |
I've played a ton of hacks, some of which are absolute masterpieces, and still, this is pretty high on my list. I groaned as the first level was yet another recreation of 1-1, which I've seen in no fewer than 2 separate Mega Man hacks, much less other Mario hacks. From there, though, the references became much more atypical and interesting, and the way that some of them are recreated is nothing short of a technical marvel, particularly the Super Mario Galaxy parts. There are some interesting new power-ups, though Bunny Mario could have used a little something extra to make Raccoon Mario not render it totally obsolete. Visually, this hack is gorgeous, but where it really shines is in the numerous secrets that there are to find. Nothing is hidden beyond the realm of logic, but you do really have to explore, and some of the things that you find - particularly that certain something in World 2 - are mind-blowing. There are no shortage of Super Mario Bros. 3 hacks out there, and this is easily among my top 5.
| Fantastic! | NestalgicNerd | 2016-02-08 | Version 1.0 |
I'm not really part of the 'scene', but a huge fan of classic Mario. I heard about this hack online and decided to check it out. What we have here is a fun, thoughtful, and impressive reworking of smb; and it's clear that a ton of work has gone into this project. I played it from start to finish - and at times when paths diverged I decided to play both, ensuring I caught everything. Bravo!
| One of the best hacks ever! | MegaEliteGamers | 2016-01-13 | Version 1.0 |
This is one of the most amazing hacks I've ever played! Classic adaptations, and a completely new approach to Super Mario Bros. 3. I love how there is a lot to explore even in levels from past Mario games by having to collect all the Star Coins. I'll sit in a level for minutes just listening to the custom music alone. Your eyes, ears and heart won't be disappointed! If you haven't played this by now, you have to right this minute. Highly recommended!
| Better than the original. Play this! | TableFlip | 2015-02-14 | Version N/A |
This hack is absolutely amazing; instead of being hard or frustrating like many hacks, this game has a medium, well-paced difficulty. The levels in the beginning might not be as original or different, but over time, the levels begin to change and become more complex. Many interesting challenges await you such as collecting the star coins or completing levels containing Prankster Comets from the Mario Galaxy franchise! Overall, this game will leave you hooked. Try it NOW!!!
| Utterly amazing and a note | doozer76 | 2015-01-07 | Version 1.0 |
Just beat it 5 mins ago. 'Wow' sums it up - I registered this account just to tell the dev thank you! I would call it a must for diehard super mario fans. One note: on level 6-boss, the enemy threw the shell into the upper-left corner and the bounce hit himself - then respawned at the same location twice therefore killing himself. An intelligent piece of work with real replay value and not ridiculously hard. (now off to make a forum post about double dragon)
| Play this hack now ! | Ligeia | 2014-09-17 | - |
This without a doubt one of the best hacks out there. Tons of work have been put into it and it shows, I can't believe all of this could be done with SMB3. It feels like an sequel that could have been officially released. I hope the author will keep up the great work and offer us some other great games to play.
| Good assembler modifications | HatZen08 | 2014-07-07 | - |
As the name suggests, the hack is a mix of many mario games. It was very well done and every world looks unique. The hack has many assembly modifications done. It includes new power ups, a reverse gravity system, a star coins system and more. As a bonus, after the player finishes the game by the first time, the comets will be unlocked. If the player has all the star coins from the comets and the worlds, the World Zero will be unlocked. It is a nice, well designed hack, with moderated difficulty. It is possibly to finish the game without the use of save states. Highly recommended.
| The prefix for a remix! | BillyTime! Games | 2014-06-06 | - |
We have seen revolutionary rom hacks that have paved the way for an entire community to grow. Most notable are SMWCentral and Sonic Retro who dedicate their resources to be the most comprehensive site for your hacking needs. All these tools for just one game?! However its not about these site but the impact of hacks and disassemblies that create the catalysts for such sites to happen. It is my firm belief that Southbird's Mario 3Mix as well as his Disassembly started way back in 2011 may have created a niche for future smb3 hacking. Upon starting the game you get a save feature and a character select with an option for player 2 to buy in. This allows for quick set up and reentry if you mess up, want a different character or if the wife came home and she wants to play too! The new game map allows you to reenter levels which will come in handy for power ups and star coins. (More on that in a sec.) The levels all share a central theme for each world for example, world 1 and 2 represent Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 respectively (Note: Spoiler alert: Level 3 is not an smb3 world.) In these levels you can revisit old levels from previous games with a twist, some levels are mashed together, some you can interact with certain elements you could not before. (New secret pipes, waterfalls) To change up gameplay even further you are tasked with hunting down star coins reappearing from New Super Mario Bros. there are three to each level and are placed in difficult to reach spots. Luckily its not a requirement unless you are looking to see what these do but knowing you can come back and hunt these down later does make me feel better. After finding secret exits, going through ghost houses (complete with its haunting SMW theme) you head to one of the very first boss castles in the game. The game really shines with boss battles. There are a variety of cool mario bosses featured after the standard bowser fights. The get harder and more complex with each fallen foe but in a way to make you learn from mistakes rather than relying on luck or save states to get the job done. (Sorry, No Boss spoilers here.) Next up is power ups, classic Mario mainstays such as the mushroom, flower, star and leaf reappear which is always welcome and they do come in abundance. The hammer bros. suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 returns which again is very welcomed. New to the game are the penguin suit which combines the powers of the frog suit and ice flower as well as the bunny carrot which last appeared in Super Mario Land 2 back in 1992. Finally we have yoshi; Do not adjust your monitor, you saw the screenshot above and this yoshi operates just as he did back in Super Mario World. This alone makes me wonder how far this hack has pushed the limits of the nes. All but yoshi can be stored in your inventory after visiting a mushroom house. With the mushroom house, the stupid line em' up game has been replaced with the memory card game but with a twist. It works almost like New Super Mario Brothers where you can keep hitting cards until you get two bowser cards (4 are in play at all times). You leave with whatever you win. The point of the game here is to push how far the nes can go with all the neat effects and various gimmicks (They can't all look and play like World 1-1!) as well as balance the game out so it may be enjoyed by gamers young and old. To create such a game like that for all gamers in mind is a labor of love. You are given all these lives and weaponry at your disposal, do you just try to finish the stages? Will you go for the illusive star coins instead? There is much more I could cover praising Southbird's recent rom hack (coughantigravitylevelscough). However I would rather you play it and see for yourself and hopefully you will say the same thing. This game changes the foundation of rom hacks going forward. Finally, I acknowledge Mario Adventure as being revolutionary for the SMB3 community. In closing I bring you a comparison, if Mario Adventure was the demo world of Mario 3 then 3Mix is Demo World - The Legend Continues. Nuff' Said.
