The first time I played this hack, I gave up at the first of many unfair goal fortresses. Usually, Mario is invincible to everything during his fanfare sequence, but the firebars that interfere with the cutscene completely ignore this rule, thus ending Mario's adventure; pits also ignore this rule. Fortunately, I returned to this hack today and used a multi-jump cheat to fly over the unavoidable mess, and beyond it lied the real exit. With that out of the way, I must say the entirety of Soldier vs. Mario is an absolute shitshow. At first glance, there are some elements of kaizo such as walking through walls, precise jumps, and tight passages, but as I kept playing, I realized that either Daibon wanted to make the most absurd SMB1 hack on RHDN or just slapped everything together carelessly. I'm pretty sure it was the latter. With several instances of enemies being stuck in the ground, softlocks, tampered goal fortresses, and the fact that you only have one chance to get through all of this, I could just tell Daibon wasn't passionate in his work. With that said, a little while after getting past the first unfair goal fortress, I made it to the first underwater stage, and apparently the pipe doesn't work, and the wall beyond it blocks the way. I used a cheat to get past this, then a few levels later, I eventually got tired, used yet another cheat to get the level selector early, and chose the final world. Thankfully, it was only two levels long. Frankly, it amazes me how this hack is still standing on RHDN, considering its unfinished nature. For those thinking about playing this hack, you can check it out if you want, but don't expect decent level design, and I hope Daibon is doing well in the present day. | |||
