Hack description

The perfect place to test your might, the Coliseum offers a new challenge to old veterans and breathes new life into the renowned battle system of Chrono Trigger. It is also arguably the most complicated event hack of the game to date, serving as indisputable proof that the Temporal Flux editor indeed has unlocked countless opportunities for reshaping the game. Three modes of difficulty are available for solo or party battles, and points can be accumulated to achieve rewards. Additionally, a cameo by a legendary swordsman appears for those who beat Hard mode on Solo.

Incredibly HARD!obscurumlux012011-02-24-

Perhaps this is meant to be only for veterans and people who are near endgame, but the coliseum is *really* hard! Even on the easiest difficulty, it'll definately offer up a challenge and then some!

One thing that gets me though is when all of your party members are downed, that's it, game over. No 'you failed try again', nope. It just kicks you back to your last save and you lose all the exp and other stuff obtained in all of your fights leading up to the loss.

This does create a great deal of tension and risk vs. reward, but also some frustration for those who already took the time to play through almost 1/3 of the game just to access it only to figure out they'd need to be at least level 30+ just to make it past the final round on 'easy' mode.

I would've loved to have seen this done as a pure stand-alone hack similar to Prophet's Guile. Something like where you're already at a set level (Level 40 for instance) and with the best equipment possible for that level, with an inventory full of alternative weapons/armor/accessories for customization purposes. Then your job would basically be about strategy and how you customized your party to best complete the challenges. Since there'd be no exp/money/tp gains, you could just award BP directly after each battle.

As it stands though, its a nice addition to an already-awesome game. It's not really worth playing through the game just for this though. Crimson Echoes (another romhack for CT) has its own coliseum and this one seems to be an earlier version of the same type of coliseum idea. Plus, CE is a more direct sequel to CT that fits in between CT and its 'official' sequel of CC.

So go play Crimson Echoes instead, there isn't much to see here.
