| DOES NOT WORK on real hardware | KFCTwister | 2020-01-16 | Version 1.05 |
DOES NOT WORK on real hardware. The equipment screens are all garbled, which is annoying for essentially just a translation hack. Unfortunate too, because I've always hated the general word-flow of this game (both SNES & GBA scripts), and after briefly testing several translation mods on my PC I found this one to offer the biggest improvement. I was hoping to play and finish the game finally. Please fix if possible. I wonder if it has to do with the new font that the hack adds? I find the new font ugly anyway so a version without it would be appreciated if it fixes the issue.
| Drier than a desert fox on crack cocaine. | BlazeHeatnix | 2019-07-02 | Version 1.05 |
It amazes me to see so many in the RHDN community that approve of retranslations like this, and call them professional quality. I've looked at many key scenes and come to one conclusion: this script is boring. It goes beyond just throwing out Woolseyisms. The dialog reads like the unofficial subtitles you'd find for an anime. It's almost as bad as RPGONE, and in some cases worse. The only reason you would ever want to use this hack is if you are some snob who despises anybody who dares localize anything from Japan other than a basic, literal translation. I mean the type of person who scoffs at anybody who would willingly play Metal Gear Solid with the English voices. It still doesn't fix some of the core issues with the official translations, namely the difference between Magitek and Magic, which is still an issue here. You can see in one of the screenshots that Terra is a "Magic Knight", but "Magitek Knight" is still a thing in the dialog. There's also the font. Why? What is so wrong with the original Chicago font that people like you and Sky Render feel the need to change it to an ugly dot matrix font? The most offensive part of it is the menu, it looks horrible. The letters actually overlap the text window. I also should point out some of the graphical glitches present in some parts of the game from uncensoring the final battle graphics. While I commend Dr. Meat for managing to do that, I don't think it's worth some of these glitchy backgrounds. We live in the year 2019, and there are still fan translators that don't want to take notes from anyone who's actually made it in the localization and ADR industry? Count me out.
| Probable a better Cyan balancing patch out. | Teathief | 2019-03-11 | Version 1.05 |
Great relocalization, a few patch conflicts with the other restoration patches that restore features of the Japanese release. And there is probable a better Cyan balancing patch out that (HatZen08's). Intergration with Button Settings Menu Restoration and SwdTech Renaming Menu Restoration would be nice. Manual patching seems to conflict. Final Fantasy 3 needs a good solid patch compilation were the conflicts have been ironed out. Level up bonus changes to the espers probable should not be in here.
| Great, albeit with some text issues | NH579 | 2019-03-03 | Version 1.05 |
This is a great translation, no doubt about that, and the fixes and such really make this much better. This really does feel professional in quality. The text is easy to follow and well written and feels to my like the best script out there for this game. Some of the changes, such as the dash and faster bushido gauge, really make this game feel quicker. However, there are some issues. There are instances of garbled text in Jidoor in World of Ruin. (Customer in the Inn, last page of Owzer's diary, dialogue with Relm and Owzer before battle) While there may be others, these are the ones I noticed thus far. Really hampered my enjoyment of this. I've had to swap my save back and forth between the previous version and this, so if anyone out there still has that, I'd keep it handy just in case. All in all, despite some glaring text errors and the clear need for some more testing, it's still the best version of Final Fantasy VI out there.
| Great writing, minor issue | Chicken Knife | 2019-02-18 | Version 1.05 |
I've been a fan of this hack project awhile, preferring the author's adherence to GBA conventions over that of Woosley. The standout thing here is the writing of the script. The quality is stunning at times and this really is one of my favorite fan translations out there. Everything comes across to me as fluid and natural sounding. Besides the writing we have lots of bugfixes and a couple gameplay changes. Bugfixes are always a great thing. Some of the gameplay changes are not so great however. The two major ones I am aware of are the Esper stat and spell rate alterations as well as Cyan's sword tech change being sped up majorly. It looks like the Esper changes have been nearly all addressed in the latest update. I'm great with that decision. The problem remains with Cyan's sword tech / bushido gauge however. It has has been sped to to the point where it fully charges in the blink of an eye. First of all, selecting a specific skill is now actually difficult because the speed makes the process quite imprecise. Secondly, he can access his top bushido skills in a second or two which makes him join the ranks of Sabin or Edgar as a very overpowered character. Imbalance was always an issue in FF6 and we don't need another god tier character. I have heard complaints about how slow Cyan's bushido power is over the years, but I've never had a problem. You just have to input commands in quick succession for the other three characters and let him charge while they execute their commands. I could even live with a speed increase if it were subtle but this one is just too extreme.
| A few issues but a solid improvement | TheSiege | 2018-05-01 | Version 1.041 |
First of all, I would like to state that I am very knowledgeable about Final Fantasy VI. Here is my full 8 hour playthrough of what is normally considered to be a 40 hour experience. https://youtu.be/_wjwlsbBn2w
Right out of the gate, I want to talk about the huge nerf to Raiden that almost had me considering giving the game a non-recommend. In the original game, after obtaining Raiden it is no longer possible to raise the speed stat through espers. The patch addresses this by giving Raiden the stat boost associated with Odin, the esper that you trade in. The flaw here is that Raiden gave you a +2 Strength boost, which is a huge improvement over the +1 boost to Speed that you're now going to get. To add insult to insult, Maduin's boost to Magic has been nerfed to giving a boost to speed as well. So what was the point of nuking Raiden? Why is this such a big deal? Besides speed being a relatively bad stat to raise, having one of your characters level with only Raiden would give them a 100% chance of victory at the coliseum. Thanks to this patch, that is no longer an option.
It's really nice that a lot of game breaking bugs have been fixed and it's nice to see the game play out the way it was intended. That being said, I'm a big fan of the new translation. If there were a way to download the translation while leaving behind the questionable decisions, that would be great. If there were a way to pick and choose, that would be even better. Until then, I would recommend this to fans of Final Fantasy VI, just keep in mind that it's going to be slightly more difficult than usual.
| Not just another revision/bugfix patch. | Chronosplit | 2015-10-28 | Version 1.03 |
I love the direction taken with dialog in this hack. Great pains seem to have been taken to make sure everyone stays in character and their voice is consistent throughout. Even if the script is based on GBA, this hack noticeably brings in content from all other translations out there to great effect. The extra dialog was used very well, and the font actually looks a lot better in motion than the screenshots let on (the main textbox font is actually FFVII's). Also, this probably has the most bugfixes in one patch out of all of the patches (on RHDN at least). Every fix I can ever remember being made is in here, including a couple more. Where Ted Woolsey Uncensored preserves the feeling of the original SNES translation, this brings in something both truer to form and a more stable gameplay experience as a whole. Recommended to play at least once.
