Hack description

This patch is intended to replace all the music from
the 1993 SNES game, Mega Man X, with full CD-quality streaming
audio using the MSU-1 audio specification created by byuu.

This patch requires the MSU-1 audio 'chip' to function, and as such will only function properly with the higan and BSNES emulators, as well as the SD2SNES flash cart.

However, the .spc fallback routine means that if the MSU-1 chip is NOT detected (such as in an emulator that does not support it, like ZSNES or snes9x), the standard audio will play, leaving the game to play as if un-patched. Non-destructive patching, FTW.

A link to a pre-assembled Audio Pack can be found in the Readme.

Only one little issue: the music's volume is too lowLProcion2022-02-24Version 1.0

The patch is working almost perfectly: The music itself is good (at least in my opinion, since I recognized MET's covers and I already loved them before playing this), the songs' loop points are okay, pretty much everything is fine. The only problem I've had is... Well, it's in the title: the MSU-1 music's volume is too low compared to that of the game's sound effects, and this forces me to amp up the emulator's or the computer's volume in order to enjoy the new soundtrack, risking letting the SFX utterly destroy my ears in the process. I'm playing this in BSNES HD, version 1.15, on Windows 10 (64-bit).

Doesn't loop?insectduel2018-08-25Version 1.0

As you know, the SNES9X v1.55 now has MSU-1 support and I tried it using that emulator and it works perfectly than higan. However, this is not the case because I have inserted .PCM tracks and use the game's sound test.

The CAPCOM jingle still exists as .SPC when you boot the game but not in the sound test. It's getting buggy already. The Boss Intro SHOULD LOOP, WHY because when I insert the .PCM using Wav2Msu even if I put the loop command or hex editor to punch in the sample hex loop number the music would not loop. The final battle intro should not loop but it's to say that ALL MUSICS SHOULD HAVE A LOOP.

If you don't want the music to loop, Audacity and Wav2Msu are useful and just punch in the end track number with the empty wave sound where the music doesn't loop.

Finally, the Dr. Light capsule should be supported for .PCM's which is track hex $AE or decimal 174 in the game.

PLEASE FIX AND UPDATE IT!

Most of the no recommendations are from people who either couldn't get it to work or were upset at the size of the music pack. This is not a fair way to judge the mod and is more projection.

The mod works as intended with only minor bugs in looping as reported by qwertymodo. If you do not like the remixed tracks (not the best) you can get a more faithful pack here.

Overall, this hack is wonderful.

Am I missing something?papacitoloko1117892015-12-30Version 1.0

I've had minimal trouble getting other msu hacks to work but this one is just giving me head aches. I've read the manifest file and it labels tracks up to 30 but then there are 32 pcm files in the audio pack. Also, with Higan you get program.rom instead of mmx_msu1.sfc, I could always rename but changing the manifest file to read the data to program.rom also works and has worked with other MSU hacks. After an hour of trying to mess around with it I'm done with this audio hack. Not sure if I'm missing something but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who is just now picking up on MSU 1 hacks.

The music is not faithful to the originalBregalad2015-08-04Version 1.0

This hack adds CD-quality audio to Mega Man X, something I was especially excited to try. Unfortunately, the music from the sample pack is for the most part heavy metal remixes which do not sound anything like the original songs, let alone better.

Only a couple of songs, such as the Title Screen or the Boss Theme sounds good and faithful to the original.

So in conclusion I do not recommend this hack, as the music is not of "improved quality" - it's just a completely different remixed music that plays instead - which does not fit into the mood of the game.

Seems rather busticatedChris Miller2015-03-11Version 1.0

That is one big honkin' download for an SNES game.

The file format used here can't even be played on VLC or any other player I've dug up, even ones that are supposed to handle PCM files.

There are any number of file formats that would work better, like mp3, ogg, flac...why would you want to saddle players with files that are ginormous and can't even be read by anything? It confers no advantage whatsoever.

Excellent audio improvement if you have MSU1Greg26002015-01-22Version 1.0

Definitely a nice improvement in CD quality audio. For those who shelled out $200+ for the SD2SNES, great to have progress in utilizing the MSU1. Downloading the CD audio separately is to be expected. I had no issues, sounds great!

i'm sure it sounds nice but...treos2015-01-15Version 1.0

Instead of a simple ISP patch, what we have here is an audio "improvement" hack that has you do a 306.5 mb download AND patch the game which can then only be played on certain emulators or certain flash drives. With a file size of 306.5 mb, I doubt that's mp3 tracks (what format are the tracks in anyway? It doesn't even say that anywhere here or in the readme.).

I MIGHT download the soundtrack some time later to check it out but 306.5 mb is a MASSIVE download for just one SNES ROM hack IMO.

Mega Man X with CD quality musicQ2014-12-29Version 1.0

Mega Man X wasn't metal enough already, so some folks added CD quality music. I can confirm that this feature works on a real SNES with an SD2SNES flash cart. It should also work in the bsnes/higan emulator. If you're a fan of Mega Man X, try this out for an improved experience.
