Sometimes, you don't need new furniture to give your house a great new look, and this hack is the video game equivalent of that. Of course, it's not going to blow your mind like one of those crazy hacks with a ton of ASM jobs, custom tilesets, or new tunes, but this hack excels in a more artful way: the manner in which things are put together. It creates a neat visual journey, and the level design is occasionally brilliant in the way it affects gameplay, as well. It does have a few cheap moments, but nothing game breaking, and not enough to really ruin the experience.
| Not bad, but nothing special. | RRThielNC | 2015-12-20 | Version V 0.99 |
When all the Internet's ROMhack-goers are spoiled rotten by all the above-and-beyond hacks like Rockman 4 Minus Infinity and Rockman 5 Air-Sliding, it's sometimes a welcomed change-of-pace to come back to a hack like this and remember what normal ROM hacks by normal people are like. Mega Man Hyperion III is one of those hacks. In short, it's just a level design hack. All the bosses, graphics, music, weapons, etc. are all the same. So, level design is all I need to go over. The level design in Mega Man Hyperion III is... fine, I guess? Okay, I'll give credit where it's due and say the levels are pretty creative and bring some okay ideas to the table. I'll give the creator credit for actually knowing how to use a level-editor(Anyone who knows how to use those damn things gets my respect). But, the levels can often feel like and unhealthy challenge. It sometimes feels like dying is the game's own fault, and that's a bad thing. Lots of low-ceiling jumps, and spike traps that simply require trial and error to beat. Which, again, is a bad thing. The levels often felt very cramped as well, with not a lot of space to move around, which might not bug everybody, but it certainly bugged me. But, overall, I could at least say the level design was fine... At least, for the initial 8 stages. Once I booted up the Doc Robot stages, everything fell apart, as the level design took a very abrupt turn for the worst. While the Robot Master stages were somewhat well designed, the Doc Robot stages and onwards were total bullshit and full of traps a fucking Roald Dahl villain would come up with. Cramped areas, annoying enemy placement, spikes out-the-wazoo, you name it. So that's enough of me rambling. I'm sure you, the reader, only want to know whether or not you should play this hack. Well, the answer is tough. When faced with this question, I feel like the answer is a clear no, simply because there's so much else you could be playing. While a decent game in it's own right, Hyperion III brings absolutely nothing new to the table, which will probably make most people not want to play it, and I honestly wouldn't blame them. So, if you've beaten Mega Man III a bunch of times and you wanna give it a more-difficult whirl, is Mega Man Hyperion III right for you? ... Sure, why not.

I have to admit, about what I saw about this hack, the level design looks creative, I like it. However it was THE ONLY thing that I like in this hack, because everything else (stage colours, enemy colours, bosses and weapons colours and enemy distribution) are still the same lame and boring things of the original. Where´s the fun on that? That´s a really REALLY bad thing. Aside the level design, everything else is the same, that´s why this rom became boring and unplayable to me, also because of the boring utilities sections, that breaks the rush sense of playing. That very unnecessary and ruins the hack. I don't recommend it, because it doesn't have nothing "new" to show. It's just a waste of time (no offense, its a criticism).
