(U)Hack description
Released in North America in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap was the twelfth entry in the Zelda series. Although the game allows the player to input their own name for Link and become the hero in an immersive experience, all of the characters in the game still refer to the player as male. This patch replaces the male pronouns referring to Link (the player) with gender-neutral pronouns (for example: "kid"" instead of "boy").Screenshots

| Functional To A Degree, But Unnecessary | darkgamer360 | 2023-03-08 | Version 1.0 |
While the hack does what it intended to do, it doesn't really bring any value to the game itself. I believe the creators had written this story and each individual sprite with male and female language in mind. To change it otherwise, wouldn't work as well. This hack diminishes the experience, since the narrative of this story gets wonky when trying to make it fit in this game. Overall, this hack is suited for a subset of people, but for others it will feel like an unnecessary feature.
| Completely unnecessary | Ligeia | 2023-03-07 | Version 1.0 |
The hack is functional, but this adds absolutely nothing to the game. If anything, it detracts from the experience because of the weird convoluted ways of avoiding gendered pronouns sometimes, which ruin the immersion. If the main character's gender is irrelevant to the story or gameplay, why not just ignore it and leave it be instead of going out of your way to change the script, butchering it in the process? Zero reason to play this hack at all. As another reviewer said, if someone can't enjoy a game just because the protagonist isn't 100% like them or like they would want them to be, they're the ones with the problem, not the game.
| Unnecessary | Aqua | 2023-03-04 | Version 1.0 |
Functional, but adds nothing to the game. Doesn't make Link no longer male, so feels superficial. If you don't want to play a game with a male protagonist, then play another game. Try to respect the vision of the creators. Honestly, being bothered by Link's pronouns instead of enjoying the experience of playing as someone that isn't exactly like you sounds weird and wrong.
| Personal Preferences | Sakara | 2023-03-04 | Version 1.0 |
A simple yet great tweak for one of the most underrated Zelda games! It's really nice to have optional minor changes like this so people can mod the game to fit their own preferences or headcanons.
| A great mod for people who want it | marinebean | 2023-03-04 | Version 1.0 |
This mod was made for those who find Link's gender irrelevant to the plot or gameplay of The Minish Cap. For those people, this mod's simple avoidance of gendered language towards the player character is effective at making this amazing game more inviting and immersive. I am one of those people, so I am very happy that someone took the time and effort to bring this mod into existence.
| Great work, well worth it | lucienne | 2023-03-03 | Version 1.0 |
Great work, thank you for this hack - we need more of these. Especially with this series, wherein the various incarnations of "Link" have always been a voiceless, androgynous, self-insert, blank-slate kind of protagonist where it's not difficult to see yourself under the bobbing green cap. I'm playing through this particular game for the first time with this. For those who don't identify with/understand this hack, especially some of the negative reviewers for it, it doesn't hurt you to have someone enjoy the game more - simply don't use it, and maybe learn from/about the people who do. :-)
| Pointless | Fox Bluereaver | 2022-10-01 | Version 1.0 |
Link is male, he's always been male. Really, all this political correctness doesn't change the gaming experience one bit. The Zelda series is far from the only one to allow you to name a character despite having canon names. What's wrong about the protagonist having a set canon gender?
| Need this for more Zelda games 10/10 | Lufvave | 2021-09-18 | Version 1.0 |
Genuienly cannot believe the other review by an epic gamer who's upset about gender neutral pronouns, despite Link always being gender neutral It's hilarious. Anyway, I definitely recommend this, only a shame it's just for the USA version Would love to have a version of this for other Zelda games
| Doesn’t really make a big difference as sprite is still male | hdofu | 2021-06-06 | Version 1.0 |
Not exactly grasping how this improves the experience really, the hero is still a male, just makes the story feel more politically correct and sterile. These games are about imagining yourself as the hero, it's like if you play Metroid you imagine yourself as Samus, you don't have to role play as someone of the same gender. Sorry can't really recommend this.
| Simple But Great | Ursula_JD | 2020-03-08 | Version 1.0 |
Link was always supposed to be gender neutral, and the fact that almost all TLOZ games allow you to name Link but continue forcing masculine pronouns always annoyed me. I am sure Link's origins were gender neutral so anyone could play and feel represented (an early magazine artwork depicted Link as a girl), so I never got why Link was forced to be treated as a boy in the games. Thank you for making this patch!
