Googie is a well-known and prolific hacker, and while I haven't played all of his stuff, I always smile a little whenever his work comes up. His style is usually a nice mixture of cute and zany, and while this hack is a slight departure from his usual style, you can tell that this is his. At any rate, this is a shorter hack of only 3 worlds, but absolutely worth playing, and would make a great base for future hacks. The graphics are tweaked a bit, adding some new scenery elements and new overworld tiles, and I have to be honest: a lot of what drew me in to this hack in the first place was those adorable cacti that you see in the featured images. While there wasn't all that much in the way of bold or surreal imagery, the music has been moved around and its placement was excellent; there's a stage with yellow skies and palm trees that uses the old World 7 overworld music, and it is perfect. The dialogue has been rewritten to be crass and humorous, and it works well, especially for a short hack with "spoof" in the title. The level design is good, and what's really neat is that all or most of the hammer brothers have items that you'll actually have to use in order to finish the game, which adds more of a sense of purpose to their overworld encounters. | |||
