The character sprite needs to be redone some as this version's walk cycle feels really stiff along with one portion of the body in the walk cycle being back a tad more making it feel bouncy. I looked at it more closely and its just a few extra additions to the character sprite here and there to fit into the space where Simon was.

My encouragement for this. Take your time and redo Sonia into your own version to replace Simon. There is room to do things as the whip and sub weapons attack only rely on a singular animation from the legs where the arms are up in the starting position. You can get really creative by making the arms swing more in his/her walk cycle along with the stairs. Just sit down and look at it all as you'll be surprised on what you can do :)
