Hack description

After many years, the evil General Onyx has returned. He has invaded the Kingdom of Hyrule to get revenge on Link. He kidnapped Zelda, as well as the Triforce of Power. With the power of the Triforce, Onyx placed a magic barrier in his underground dungeon, to prevent Link from getting close enough to rescue Zelda. Link went to Impa for wisdom. She informs Link that the only way to break the barrier is to seek out and find eight magical "Spirit Skulls". The Spirit Skulls are said to possess small traces of power similar of that found in the Triforce. With all of the Spirit Skulls used together, the power should be enough to break the barrier, allowing Link to brave the fierce dungeon, and rescue Princess Zelda from the General of Darkness, Onyx

Originally a project worked on partially by Trifindo, this was picked up on, revised, and fully completed to where the game is now fully playable. Only the 1st quest has been done on this game.

At first it seems like this is a great hack but you quickly realize it's bugged out.

First the RHDN page shows the wrong CRC32. It won't patch on Zelda PRG0. It WILL patch with PRG1.

Second, you can walk through the walls in the underground parts in dungeons. How is that still not fixed is beyond me.

Level 2 is messed up. The bomb pickup that appears when you kill all enemies in the room before the dodongos is unreachable. The dodongo room can't be exited once entered. If you don't have enough bombs you're screwed, you have to die and go outside and get bombs somewhere. Annoying. Why should anyone waste their time with a bugged romhack.

It seems like this hack was designed with a specific emulator in mind. I hate when hacks do this. It should work to hardware spec. If it doesn't work with in a specific emulator, the emulator is doing it wrong.

Some spoilers Ahead:

This hack was great, but did have some of it's problems. The game makes you start off with a boomerang, and had to go to Level 1 to get your sword, Level 1 & 2 were very nice easy dungeons to get you started in the game but Level 3 & 4 just punched you in the face, Why have bubbles in the 3rd level of the game that do 8x damage with the green tunic? and 4x with the blue ring? these bubbles in this game dont stun disable your sword, they kill you with 1 hit! without up-grades! not a fan of having shooters with darknuts in the 3rd level either, but it is what it is. Not a fan either of having to push blocks into blocks in the dungeons to find secret passways, it got very old after Level 4 and so on. Game was very generous with bombs, money, and bomb up-grades but which meant you'd be bombing alot of the dungeons and overworld (which I did) I went through the whole game just to 100% it, which made it worth it. I found an extra heart container just incase I missed one but I didn't. Level 9 was a beast to beat, took a good 40 minutes to complete

The graphics in this game are great, and it's nice to see a complete new overworld and new dungeons designs, I can tell this person put alot of work into it and if you're up for a Zelda 1 challenge you should play this game. Death is certain in this game, but with the right equipment you should be able to do just fine in this game

7.5/10

Quite fun!reMACKARio2019-11-27Version 1.0

First off the instructions are incorrect, the ROM needs to be `Legend of Zelda, The (U) (PRG1) [!].nes`, that is PRG1, not PRG0 as mentioned in the description.

There are a few bugs, but nothing that prevents you from playing the game (at least up to the 4th dungeon where I am now). Bugs I encountered:

  • Dungeon 2 has a room where bombs appear after defeating the enemies but it's in a spot that's impossible to reach. (Just make sure you have bombs before reaching the boss).
  • In underground areas in dungeons you can walk through the walls very quickly to the other ladder or item. (This just makes things easier, but doesn't break the game).
  • For some reason the tiles are goofed up on *most* bomb-able walls in dungeons so it's obvious which can be bombed. This isn't always true though, in dungeon 3 there were a few that looked like a normal wall.

It's a little frustrating at the beginning until you get the sword, but afterwards is quite enjoyable. I had a good time solving the dungeon puzzles - some were quite tricky. I'd say this is slightly easier than Outlands, but still worth a play.

This hack was very fun to play! The dungeons have been edited, graphics, and the entire overworld. The creator's really put a lot of time into this hack... Also another thing lol, the game was misspelled as "Awakening of Onyx" instead of "Awakening of Onox" Because the general is call General Onox, not the General Onyx lol... Other than that great hack though!!!

One of the best since Outlands!!!Ck2017-01-26Version 1.0

All I can say is WOW!!!

This is truly a very well made hack of this favorite classic. It took me a minute to find a way to patch my ROM on a Chromebook, but after logging into cameyo.com and uploading the windows patcher, ROM and BPS patch, I was quite the happy camper.

The game play is fantastic, the graphics are amazing, the world is completely new, with only select few of the original enemies, items and bosses, most of the redesigned. It feels like the sequel, to be honest, much like Outlands. Again, the graphics look great and don't expect an easy ride, even finding your way around and uncovering levels is a true treasure hunt!

Level four, where I'm currently dealing with feels like the harder levels of the original second quest, but thankfully the authors were kind enough to provide more bombs and a strong ring to deal with the hard levels they let loose! And at this rate, I can't imagine how much harder the next five levels will be, yikes, we're in for it for sure!

Once more, a HUGE THANK YOU for a superb Zelda hack guys!!!

Ps. CXS Zelda is another excellent hack, I haven't been able to complete my quest there and all of the stuff about glitchy graphics I wrote in my review was off.. I patched the WRONG ROM, so please forgive me for not getting it right and then blaming the CXS for that! I played most of it glitched and loved every second of it, that's just how good it was, Lol!

Muchos kudos for these new releases everyone!!!

Pss. My only request is to see if you make any plans to create a second quest for Awakening of Onyx, no hurry, 2018 on would be just incredible, but I'm happy with what you gave us if that's all you'll do, but I won't discourage you at all if you do! :^)
