Hack description

Have you ever noticed how completely useless the Mega Buster is in Mega Man 7? How about the really short invulnerability period Megaman has after being injured? Have you ever wished someone would come along and do something about it? Well, you're in luck because someone finally has!

Introducing "Mega Man 7 Refit," a ROM hack which makes Mega Man 7 a little more like those old NES classics in a few minor, but significant ways:

So if you're looking for a little change to your boring old Mega Man 7 gameplay experience, give this hack a try! It may satisfy that itch for something slightly new!

v1.2.0 Update

Wouldn't you know it? More graphic and text changes! Wowie! Oh, and individual patches for every little upgrade this baby has to offer.

Yes, you can now have a faster Buster, longer invulnerability times, and even refresh the graphics in your favorite Mega Man 7 (US) hacks... like, say, Mega Man 7 Restoration!

How cool is that?

Made my favorite game of all time even betterSupergamerguy2022-01-23Version 1.2.0

I adore Mega Man 7, and I think it gets an undeserved bad rap among the Mega Man community for not being on the NES. It has solid gameplay, great visuals and music, and a heck of a lot of charm. However, it wasn't perfect, and this hack aims to fix that. It wholeheartedly succeeds. Mega Man feels better than ever with a more powerful charge shot, as well as a faster charge time. The longer invincibility frames are also much appreciated, as they go a long way in making the mechanics feel fully perfected. This was already a great game on its own, but this hack makes it one of the quintessential Mega Man experiences. I recommend Mega Man 7 Refit with 100% confidence.

A Much Smoother ExperienceEldrethor2021-07-26Version 1.2.0

Mega Man 7 is an odd duck in the series. It's not a bad game, but it has its quirks that don't allow it to shine as much as it could have, and this patch does a great job of course-correcting some of that.

Right from the beginning, the biggest change is the buff to the charged shot's charge time and damage, which speeds up the pace of the game in a way that I never knew it needed. The increased invincibility frames is a nice change as well, but it's not as noticeable, since enemy designs and placements are much more forgiving here than in past games. Against certain bosses and sub-bosses though, it shines oh so bright.

The NES-era graphical and typeface changes are nice as well. Enemy drops and text look exactly like how you would imagine they would look in the 16-bit era, and they help to bring this game more in line with its six previous entries. I especially like that these changes are entirely optional, since I'm personally fine with the game's base aesthetics, but greatly appreciate that classic look.

I don't really have any complaints about this hack, but if I had to nitpick, it's that I'm not a fan of the added "Refit" tag to the main title. Unless it's a significant overhaul (e.g. whole new levels, characters, etc.), I prefer hacks to be subtle, especially for ones that strive to bring a game up to the standards that it should have been on release. Personal preference aside, I feel like the tag would look better repositioned so that it's not overlaid on top of the "VII".

Overall, this is an excellent hack. While the game still has its quirks, the improvements feel great, and this hack smooths out the pacing of the game in ways that feel significant without cutting too deeply into its difficulty. Highly recommended.

How it should have been from the startRed Soul2021-07-12Version 1.2.0

What can I say? To me, due to a collection of bad design decisions, Mega Man 7 has always been a sort of black sheep in the franchise.

While the game is visually and aurally very pleasant, it was a hot mess mechanically. Long winded animations got in the way (cool to look at, but wasted I-frames), the buster was, for no good reason, weaker than it had been for 6 whole games at that point and there are a whole slew of little annoyances that add up for an experience that leaves to be desired.

Then this hack swoops in and saves the day, addressing so many of these issues that it makes replaying the game not a chore, but a joy!

Not only that, giving the player the ability to customize the experience to their liking? it doesn't get much better than that.

A perfect patch for mega man 7Johnmj892018-09-05Version 1.1.2

This patch makes the game run smoothly and the ability to skip past most of the text in game. It is definitely an improvement over the original game.

Perfect for Veterans & Newcomers Alike!Ziko2018-08-22Version 1.1.2

I just finished this and I can say that with certainty this hack plus the restoration hack essentially makes the game a whole package and not a half-hearted attempt much like Capcom did back in 1995. I know this game gets a lot of hate from fans but Refit if anything might change your mind like it did mine. The only gripe is now that it's an easier game, but I think that was the intent. :)

Perfect Patch, only one tiny issuePolar-Star2018-03-13Version 1.1.2

This hack is fantastic, it makes the perfect Mega Man 7 experience. 100% would recommend.

My only issue is how the title screen is changed, maybe a separate patch that doesn't change the title screen? Besides this, it's a great hack that changes up MM7 just a little bit to make it feel great.

Decreases slow-down!rocklite2017-07-05Version 1.1.2

Removing the charge animation also makes the game run better when too many sprites were on screen!! AMAZING! Would love to see him charge up without holding gun out though to stay in line with the NES style changes. Speeding up text with B button in scenes previously not allowed is AWESOME as well! SO thankful for this patch!! I love it!

Did not work with MSU-1 patch because Burstman and Springman freeze the game when hit with a buster shot.

Excellent changes!lexluthermiester2017-02-27Version 1.1.2

While I haven't finished the game with this patch, the changes are readily apparent and very welcome! The changes to the graphics are subtle but only add to the over-all quality of the game. These refinements add much without taking anything away. Very cool hack indeed!
