1805 - Final Fantasy I & II - Dawn of Souls (UA).gbaHack description
This patch overhauls Final Fantasy I: Dawn of Souls to use a Vancian spellcasting system in place of MP. Many routines and data structures have been modified for this purpose, and several new ones introduced. It functions much like the NES version's spell charge system but is more flexible.Screenshots

This mod adds in the magic system used in the NES version of Final Fantasy 1. It was also in the MSX, Wonderswan Color, and Pixel Remaster versions, but I would for a moment like to touch on one of those ports in particular. Dawn of Souls is heavily, if not directly ported from the Wonderswan versions of FF1 and 2. I happen to own the special edition WSC that was packed in with FF1, and have brute forced it in Japanese on a screen that I could see if the planets aligned on a night with a blue moon. This mod does bring it closer to that version, which also had the old magic system, but it had some other things too that didn't make it to the GBA. One of these was money for completing the 15 Puzzle. On the WSC port, there are no winnable consumables. There is only Gil, and that is much preferred in my opinion. This mod does not change the GBA loot table for that game, nor does it put the Silver (Mythril) Sword in Elfhiem. If this mod changed those two things to be congruent with the NES and WSC versions, that would be great, but hardly necessary. As is, this is a good mod that offers a challenge to those that think MP made the game much too easy.

I highly suggest this romhack if you're playing FFI for the first time. It retains the speed and enhancements of the remake but brings back some of the difficulty with the original's engaging MP system. The GBA version is pretty easy to begin with, so the added complexity of this MP system is welcome.
