Hack description

This hack restores the crosses that appeared in the background of stage 1 and on the zombie's coffin from the Japanese version, and it also changes the names of Asutaroto to Astaroth and Sardius back to being called Samael once again as well.

It also removes most of the slowdowns, making the game much more enjoyable to play as well.

It also makes it where you can access the hidden menu with the first controller by holding L and pressing Start as well.

This hack also works with Lufia's Super Arthur hack as well.

Slowdown begone!Supergamerguy2023-12-17Version Final

There's not much to say about this hack, other than it makes Super GnG so much better to play. The game runs smooth as silk, and the added localization fixes are a nice cherry on top. Restoration is the definitive way to play Super GnG, made better only in tandem with the Super Arthur hack.

A must for SGnG players just for the FastROM alonetsubasaplayer162022-12-30Version Final

A must-install for Super Ghouls n' Ghosts. Not only does it restore some of the artwork in the backgrounds, it also implements the FastROM, so slowdowns are DRASTICALLY reduced. 2nd controller? What's that? I only need one to access the hidden menu. Goes excellently with the Super Arthur hack for those who struggle with some of the gameplay.

(This review has been written in part by this hack being played on original hardware via FXPAK Pro.)

The best way to play this great SNES game!!RHZ2020-11-21Version Final

It's great to be able to play Super Ghouls'n Ghosts with less slowdowns and have it uncensored to make it look like the original Japanese release. Being able to access the hidden menu with the first controller instead of having to use the second controller is a nice little extra. Thank You!!

Holy balls, this actually makes the game PLAYABLE!!Apocalypse6122019-05-22Version Final

All I can say the first time I booted up the original game was, "What was Capcom thinking???" They clearly didn't have a clue what they were doing on the SNES.

This patch makes the game PLAYABLE. The slowdown that was there before was absolutely horrendous and unacceptable. THANK YOU!!

Makes the game playable on the Super UFO Pro 8 on a SHVC-CPU-01 SNES.Kyosho2018-02-12Version Final

This might work for other flash carts as well.

Apparently Super Ghouls'N Ghosts looks for a specific security chip. If it doesn't find it, it garbles the graphics. The game needs to find that chip either in the cartridge itself, or in your SNES to work. Obviously, by running the game in a flash cart, I didn't have on-cartridge chip. I do have a security chip in my SNES, of course. However, it is a different revision of the security chip. Specifically, an earlier one. My SNES is a launch model SHVC-CPU-01.

Whatever other changes this patch makes to the ROM, it also appears to remove that security check. Probably one of the things done to improve performance? No idea.

Regardless, you have my thanks, SCD.

Makes SGnG run really well!Fras2017-10-18Version Final

This patch uncensors the american release of the game, and adds in some unused sprites as well. My interest in this patch lied elsewhere however; it attempts to lessen this game's infamous slowdown and does so rather well! Some places that used to slow down to a crawl now goes so fast it almost feels as if it's speeding up instead!

I recorded a quick playthrough of loop 1 with Higan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGOxwcTtXbE. I've added some notable timestamps in the description box.

It does seem to have a few flaws though. The intro cutscene has broken sprites, and stage 1 didn't seem to load the first time in my recording so I had to reset. I consider these to be rather minor issues however.

If you're a fan of this game you should definitely try this patch out. Seeing how well the game could have ran back in the day is a pretty cool experience!
