I played through the first castle just to get an idea of what this hack is going for. Though there are some issues with the color palette I believe all of these choices were made intentionally by Teeporage to capture the look of the earliest GameBoy release games with lots of sprites bleeding together with the background. Were this an over the top graphics hack and that were to happen I would see it is a poor choice but here like I said I believe is intentional in order to capture that classic GameBoy look for better and for worse. As soon as I saw the name of the hack I was wondering why no one else had done that before and so very well but that's how great ideas work.

Teeporage also did some changes to the sound effects itself in a way that also reminds me of some of those GameBoy sound effects. The music isn't changed from what I can tell but the overall tone has been changed and it just helps really sell the whole experience as being played on GameBoy hardware.

This hack may not look like much from a screenshot and a description but once you give it a play through you will probably agree that though it's not the greatest ROM hack of all time it's absolutely successful in capturing what an actual Super Mario Bros. original release GameBoy title might have been.
