Hack description

This simple "Quality of Life" hack changes only three things in the original Zelda - Link's Awakening DX.

Changes:

No more text when you touch certain objects. Rocks, cracked rocks, pots, ice blocks, etc.

Guardian Acorns and Pieces of Power are quick pickups. No more long text interrupting game play.

No more low health beeping.

Optional:

If you steal an item from the shop, you aren't renamed to 'THIEF' and the death counter isn't increased when the shopkeeper kills you.

Optional:

Compatible with toruzz's VWF hack. Check the Readme file for patching instructions.

Version 1.1 - Added an optional compatibility patch for toruzz's VWF hack.

Version 1.2 - Added an optional patch to remove punishment for obtaining the 'THIEF' photo from the shop.

Initially I decided to replay this game Vanilla. The crazy thing is I got through the Bottle Grotto without the patch. But then I got annoyed with the Crystals that require the Pegasus Boots. They keep giving you the text box even when they're equipped, I decided it was time for the patch. It's amazing how seamless getting a Piece of Power or Guardian Acorn becomes. Never playing it vanilla again. Also major props for making this compatible with Toruzz's VWF hack the_icepenguin. I understand you didn't have to do this.

I actually just finished a full Let's Play using this mod in conjunction with Toruzz's VWF hack and Artemis251's Restoration patch and for the most part they were totally compatible. I cannot express how annoying it was to enter a small text window every time I approached an object without the bracelet equipped or have combat interrupted by picking up a piece of power or an acorn. Going back to Link's Awakening DX, small annoyances like the incessant low-life beeping and needless pop-up text whenever you accidentally brush against a rock (prior to obtaining the bracelet) would mar an otherwise stellar game. This excellent hack gets rid of those hitches, plus the author was kind enough to make it compatible with the VWF hack. Simply put, this is the best way to replay the game.

I simply adore little fixes like these. Link's Awakening is a favorite of mine and now it's been made all the better by getting rid of the most annoying facets of the game. No longer will I have to actively avoid picking up Pieces of Power or touching a crystal. Highly recommended.
