Uncensored, but Still the Same Poor Translationmoritasan20402020-06-22Version 2.1

I guess this is what it says it is... Uncensored. But tho it says "better translation", it doesn't replace the prototype's translation with an accurate one; seems to be the same... I was hoping for a way to play Mother 1 as it was meant to be, and nothing more.

My options are: 1: An official, but bad translation. 2: A great translation, but with GBA-related downgrades. 3: A great translation, but with tons and tons of fan-made changes.

I sad...

This is my preferred way to play the first Mother game.

The original prototype translation feels rather half-baked and lacks nearly all the charm that the SNES Earthbound brought to the table. I distinctly remember the utter disappointment I felt playing it in the early days of emulation.

A couple years ago, the 25th anniversary rom hack came out and it seemed very promising. This had one of the few fan translations that feels like a professional job, restoring all the charm of Earthbound. While tremendous work went into the graphical updates, unfortunately nothing really looks right IMO, and I don't think this is nostalgia talking since I never had any for Mother in the first place. Also, as far as the gameplay / difficulty tweaks, I prefer the option of the original difficulty / encounter rate.

The recent virtual console release of Earthbound Beginnings was disappointingly just a repackaged version of the English prototype. Moving on..

Now arriving at this rendition, I can't tell you how happy I've been playing through this uncut version of the game, expertly compiled from various hacks. Pairing the lovely translation from the 25th anniversary edition with what is essentially the original game along with minor graphical restorations is deeply satisfying. I'm delighted with this and I hope many people get to play it.

One piece of constructive feedback: someone needs to correct the RNG in this game. Like several other NES RPGS, the RNG is terrible in the sense that you can spend 30 seconds walking without an encounter, but shortly after you get into these patterns where you face an enemy on every step for 4 or 5 steps consecutively. It's a bit maddening. That same issue was patched in Astral Esper's Final Fantasy Restored mod and I'd adore seeing something similar done here.

EDIT

Additional feedback: please offer an optional patch to have Giegue's name changed to Giygas in order to be consistent with Earthbound.

Thanks again for the great work!
