Hack description

This hack was made for the Metconst 2017 Fall Contest, and is its winner. The hack consists of three large areas, a hub, and a final area. Average blind playthrough is about two hours. Linearity does not exist in this hack, so if you have difficulty in one place, try going elsewhere.

Story: Imago is at it again! It now threatens the very existence of Halloween! Getting to Imago is no simple task! It has infiltrated a massive space pumpkin and sealed off all entrances. Legend says that every Halloween three Holy beings appear in the physical realm... perhaps with these spooks, as people call them, Samus can gain access to the pumpkin and save Halloween!

Reviews

Fantastic, one of the best MZM hacks for sure!ShadowN642023-12-16Version 1.2

Excellent little hack with great theming and custom music. Not too long but lots of great hides and I never felt like anything was unfair. Took about an hour to complete, maybe two to get all the items. I loved the little humorous write-ups for all the power ups as well. Space jump being the Game Genie Cheat Code for infinite jumps, ha! So true! End game trash! 10/10.

It won the contest for a reason. A must play for ZM fans.Mylocke2023-10-18Version 1.2

This hack has a nice length and feels like a feature game. It has good progression, a bit of free roam and tons to explore. I never felt bored or lost, it was designed around the player. Bosses weren't terribly difficult but offered a fun challenge (mostly) - I loved the import of several graphics and music from other games. Especially the Mario enemies and Zelda Temple Theme in Metroid Sound Font for The Pumpkin Biome. Speaking of Biomes, they were all really unique and felt relatively organic considering the theme. Probably my favorite Zero Mission hack I've played so far. No wonder why it won the contest!

Got me to finally try classic Metroid games.blinky362022-02-22Version 1.2

I'm going to keep this short and sweet, so as to not talk about myself so much in order to make my point. That said, I had always wanted to get into traditional 2D Metroid games, but never really felt the inclination to do so. I beat Metroid Prime as a kid, and enjoyed it a lot, but never bothered giving the 2D entries a go. This has nothing to do with any prejudice to 2D, branching-path, or retro games; I love platformers, and I'm writing a review on romhacking.net for Pete's sake. Even so, I just never picked up these games.

Until one day about a year or so ago, I saw this hack listed either here or on Metroid Construction, and just decided why the heck not.

This hack is a hole in one, well crafted both visually and mechanically. It was able to show me exactly what I've been missing from classic 2D Metroid (namely Zero Mission's fluent controls) in the setting of a very festive and spooky hack. The map was a ton of fun to explore, find my way around, and eventually master.

Long story short, as my first 2D Metroid game, Spooky Mission still sits as one of the best I've played. Let alone one of the best hacks I've played.

Yes. Yes. Absolutely yes! Play this hack!

Fans of Metroid and Castlevania alike will love this hack. I would reaaaallly like to see more hacks like this one. I mean, sure I'm partial to any MetroidVania anyway. But this takes the cake. Background area rewrites from the ground up? That is totally AWESOME!!! New Map, New Item Names, New Everything!!! Except Samus, who is still Samus, of course.

Hacks like this one will never die for me. I could play this over and over. Just as I still play the original Super Metroid from time to time. Loved every exciting second of playing this hack. DO MORE! DO MORE! Thanks.

This was fun to playinkingsama2018-08-17Version 1.2

This hack is pretty good, the environments are from other games and the music too!

It's a little bit easy though, even the final escape couldn't kill me but the hack in general is enjoyable.

The text has changed too and I have to admit it, i laughed a little bit with some of the jokes.

Totally recommended.

Very much a Short But Sweetjm1028872018-03-11Version 1.2

So I downloaded this over a week ago and got into it pretty heavily, enough so that I think I finished it in two days. The game is still Metroid, so you do have to do plenty of exploring and trying everything to figure out what to do and where to go at any particular time. However, the game is not particularly hard. I particularly find the humor quite enjoyable. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's quite fun in that regard. (I love that "This isn't very useful..." remark :P)

I usually do more in-depth reviews, but in essence, this is basically a Halloween-themed Metroid....classic Metroid with a new look. It can be finished in a day or two and isn't ridiculously hard.

My Rating: 9.75/10 It's really short and sweet. Once you figure out where a few power-ups are, it becomes a pretty simple deal as to where to go. Until then, you'll likely spend it quite lost if you don't explore. It's not perfect, but it's really worth a play for the fun of it.
