| One of the worst romhacks period. | rob64 | 2024-01-07 | Version 4.3.0 |
It's amazing to me anyone gave this hack any attention at all. I guess that's what happens when you're one of the only available hacks of a game. Right off the bat, the character recolors are tacky and just look bad. The shoehorned in beta elements are also strange and don't have any reason to be in the game other than just because the creator could. This is the kind of thing you did with your Gameshark back in the day when you were bored not because you wanted to play the entire game as Yellow Link and with janky beta animations. This would have been enough to make me stay away from this hack from the get go but unfortunately since there aren't other Majora hacks I pushed on. It gets so much worse. On the technical side of things, this hack is a complete joke. Immediately you will notice crouch stabbing and other small movement options have been disabled. The creator has this really strange fear of people speedrunning his game that is on display at almost every turn. I am not a speedrunner so I don't like that I'm essentially punished for this completely irrational reason. This goes even further than ruining game mechanics, theres fences absolutely everywhere and other weird ways to "patch" glitches and skips such as making the clock tower door a large drop down door instead of the one you just push open. This is made extra embarrassing once you realize the hack is borderline nonfunctional and its own stupid mechanics can be used to break it more than you could previously. The beta jump that was shoehorned in can actually be used to get around other parts of the hack completely unintentionally, even some of the lazily implemented skip preventing objects. It's a miracle when the game works. Object flags don't set properly or will reset at random when solving puzzles and the game crashes and hangs at random on every possible platform you could play the game on. Technical aspects aside, you would hope at the very least it's a fun and well designed game at the end of the day. It isn't. This hack is quite possibly the biggest failure in understanding game design I have ever witnessed. Item placement just feels like a randomizer was turned on. Nothing is cleverly placed or had any thought behind it, you'll find progression necessary items in random holes in the ground so you need to simply check every single chest in the game systematically. The changes to the overworld do not provide any interesting challenge or puzzle solving. For example you will find bombable rocks in-front of entrances in an area you already needed bombs to get into to begin with. Things like this only waste time or at worst provide an inconvenience if you don't have any of said item left in your inventory. The changes to the dungeons are the biggest sin here. Every dungeon is filled with invisible garbage that you need the lens of truth to see(which is once again located in a random hole in the ground, hope you found it idiot LOL). Anything that could be made invisible was, not just the typical enemies, but mandatory switches and chests too. This might be okay if like in a real Zelda game these were telegraphed in literally any way but they aren't. Softlocks are bountiful as well since you can enter many areas with certain items but then cannot progress any further and can't leave because the door locked behind you for no reason. I cannot confirm but I hear this hack somehow actually gets worse with each update and I fully believe it after the complete and utter incompetence I've personally sat through and witnessed. Absolutely astounding to me that someone that possesses enough know how to modify the game this much could produce something this rancid. If anyone is looking for a well made "Master Quest" style hack search around for Majora's Mask Master Quest. Its 8 years old now and unfortunately not available on this site but its genuinely well made(except for the Stone Tower Temple, it's weirdly janky especially for how good everything else is) and is a fresh way to replay Majora unlike this garbage. tl;dr avoid at all costs
| Quite a challenging version. | Anuar | 2022-03-19 | Version 4.3.0 |
The game is perfect... The creator is very talented. It's challenging, it's confusing but entertaining, it has several Easter eggs, one day I found an Iron Knuckles underwater in the lab. There are some features that I would like to see implemented in Masked Quest, but it's just my point of view, for example:
In fact the 3 times that I finished this rom I only found 5 errors.
If you ask me what I think about this project: It's complete... but some things can still be improved ;) 03-19-22
| A dismal and disappointing experience | aldaraia | 2021-06-19 | Version 4.3.0 |
This is aims to be a Master Quest style of romhack, but goes beyond remixed dungeons and adds in new content, cosmetic changes and altered enemy behavior. The issues become glaringly obvious when the execution goes so far as to hamper the player experience. Key items are shuffled into new areas that will force the player to evaluate their options based on their available toolset. It starts to become a test of patience when items are needed to solve puzzles that typically have one solution. The problem is that they are incredibly non-intuitive, bizarre, and can even require a brute-force approach akin to throwing darts in the dark. The game will also punish you for doing quests out of order, in spite of encouraging open-ended gameplay. If you collect Zora eggs from PF without first beating Snowhead, you will be punished for it. It doesn't help that PF has a bugged chest that opens itself (the original hookshot chest), because it shares flags with a different chest in the area. Without hindsight of that, you will have to go back AGAIN. One of the string suits of the hack are the enemy designs. They, along with the bosses, have new elemental varieties, aggressive AI, and reduced vulnerabilities to level the playing field. It is a lot more energetic than the vanilla setup, and is part of what kept me interested in finishing the romhack. Looking back at it now, I regret playing it all the way through. There was no feeling of achievement that came from soldiering through the ridiculous gantlet that was the moon trials. The cruel design choices do not respect the time invested by the player, even mocking them for it. The moon is where the game becomes very trollish, and actively exploits the naivety of those who don't know when to quit. First off, the Deku area is the hack's point of no return. You CAN return in the initial area, but they are deemed as too good for you afterwards. Once you get to the fourth area, you will be required to use a powder keg. Don't have one? Reset the game and replay through it all again. Think you're prepared? If you don't always keep magic beans or gave away the Gibdo mask, you're screwed again. Even then, if you don't always keep a fish with you, then you can count on trudging through it all again. The manner in which the game will softlock and abuse you just for the privilege of saying you beat it is incredibly heinous and unbecoming of quality romhack design. All of that suffering just to fight a vanilla Majora and an ending that crashes halfways through, plopping your butt in North Clock Town. Did I beat the hack? Yes. Did I win? No, I was played. 3/10
| Greatest majora mod so far! | richterwilker | 2020-09-07 | Version 4.2 1/3 |
I'm loving all the improvements and new puzzles so far. The fact that you moved around some elements, like the bank, the first fairy, and one of the bomber boys, for example, really change the way the first cycle is played, for the better. A new strategy has to be made to be able to get the ocarina, and it gave new life to the game! Not to mention being able to use the d-pad for the important masks and ocarina, a godsend feature. I've seen people complaining that some older versions of this mod weren't good, but to me, this is becoming the definitive way to play this game. Even better than the 3DS one. I didn't even mention the added puzzles and road blocks that force you to use your knowledge of the game to bypass them. I like myself a good challenge like that. To finish it, I can say: it's a deserved well done mod for a game that has been always in the shadow of Ocarina of Time. There was care and thought put into it, and I appreciate that.
| A horrible mess | SlickYoshi | 2019-12-30 | Version 3.0 |
This is by far one of the most intriguing hacks I've played, and it's great to see Majora's Mask finally getting some ROM hacks that people have been craving for so long. It makes a lot of changes that make you rethink the way you play the game you thought you know oh so well through use of clever new mechanics, and familiar puzzles with new pieces. This gives the game a lot of positives, but also a few pretty big negatives. The most immediate change that one would notice, is the inclusion of inaccessible items at the very beginning of the games, showcasing that you can actually head back out of the clock tower at will. This mostly showcases that there are a lot of region changes, but it is still a rather interesting change. The biggest alteration is that most of the items are scattered throughout the overworld, as opposed to in the dungeons. This makes the game feel more like Breath of the Wild, in that you can play the game in practically any order you'd like, and personally, I LOVE this change. It makes the world feel much more vast than it would otherwise. Those changes carry throughout most of the game, and there's too many instances of them to list here. But one of the coolest inclusions in my opinion, was the inclusion of elemental damage with the transformation masks. Unfortunately, it seems like this was only relevant with the Goron transformation, as the others don't seem to have them. A big complaint I have, is the manual jump. It's kind of cool to see some beta content included, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to add anything other than annoyance when trying to perform a jump attack. The biggest issue I have seems to be the lack of "mandatory" objects, like stray fairies. I searched all over Woodfall Temple and only found 14/15, after searching every corner of every room. I had the same issue with Snowhead and Great Bay as well, though I wasn't exactly looking in Great Bay, after what I went through with Woodfall. This also applies to the Oceanside Spiderhouse. I looked in every location I could possible think of and only found 29 of 30, making what I assume is the Giant's Wallet inaccessible, and the All-Night Mask and two heart pieces by extension. There are a few live stream guides available, though they don't cover the full game. But even watching them, they also gave up after spending a long time trying to find the items. It would be nice if there was some kind of "official" guide as to where these things are, since they seem to be required in order to beat the game, judging by the hack's description. Other than that, I'll admit the game seems to be unbeatable to me. I made it all the way to Ikana Canyon, just to learn that I can't get Magic Beans because of the placement of the bean salesman. This makes the well unbeatable, and the rest of the game inaccessible by extension. There may be something I missed, but I have spent the better part of 3 real days looking all over the game for some kind of explanation, but I haven't found anything. Unfortunately, it also looks like I've made it farther than anyone else, judging by the guides online. Most people give up pretty early with how difficult the game is. If I could find just some tiny little bit of information on how to get to the bean salesman, I could probably finish the game, but as it stands, I am stuck at about 80% completion with no end in sight. Overall, the game is worth playing through just to see how far you can get, but at the end of the day, there is a very tall wall that doesn't seem to be passable. If I could figure out the puzzle, I'd be more than happy to change my opinion on the hack, but as it stands, I can only safely give it a 6/10. It has an AMAZING concept, but is too vague and convoluted to give it a passing grade. 3.0 EDIT: I tried the game again in 2.5.2 and ended up beating it, though it was not pretty. I decided to try out the new updated version, and remarkably, it's even worse in my honest opinion. Skipping the first cycle may be an improvement to some, but to me, it removed the only honest puzzle from the game. The Deku Bubbles changing speed based on their size is absolutely abysmal. I appreciate that they are more accurate now, but it doesn't matter when they move too slow to hit their target in the first place. I didn't even make it to the first dungeon before encountering a crash in the Honey and Darling Shop. At that point, I didn't even attempt to finish. I can not honestly recommend anyone play this mess. I still think there is some merit to it, but the cons FAR outweigh the pros. The end of the hack is just non-stop trolls, and when you finally make it to the end, there is one more troll that will softlock you if you can't predict the future. None of these issues would matter if there was any indication as to what was coming, but instead, it's just non-stop softlocks and horrible game design. 3/10.
| The Most Tedious 3D Zelda Hack I've Ever Played | MAOT666 | 2019-12-29 | Version 2.5.2 |
Major Spoilers ahead for this: Longer games means longer reviews: Starting off from Pros, to Mehs, to Cons Pros: The game starts off like vanilla, but instead of Skull kid wearing Majoras Mask he's wearing Links face as a mask (Ok). Each transformation have different tunic colors, Start off with a wallet upgrade to 150 and not 99, and start with 5 Hearts and not vanilla 3. Double damage gave an extra challenge to the game. Nice hiding spot for one the bombers for the code/notebook. Extra tree textures around the overworld, The Banjo-Kazooie entrance with the spinning tri-forces to the entrances to the dungeons was a nice easter egg I noticed. Items in the game are switched around so have fun finding them. Chateau Romani milk was very easy to have without having to pay for it, just had to play Eponas song to a cow and you would get it and not just regular milk, so you could always have infinite magic throughout the game. Goron throws a fire punch when you hit enemies. Game gave you Stick & Deku Nut up-grades that didn't have in the original. I did like the Poe sisters being the ones as mini-bosses with all the Arrow up-grades in the overworld and not the dungeons. Minor Mehs: Being able to jump was a nice little installment but didn't really do much (Just made Jump Slash more annoying to perform than anything). Whats the purpose of changing the banker in the middle of clock town and replacing the old banker spot with a gossip stone that does nothing? Don't understand the Goron punch block in front of the bomb shop when you can get the Blast mask later from the old lady or in Termina field, just annoyances I guess to put into the game for to buy powder kegs later? Adult wallet being 300 (No giant's wallet explained later). The Hookshot was very well hidden, but wouldn't expect to check a spot like that unless you already had it or scarecrow song and I only saw it from a distance because there was a chest and not a Heart Piece. I was lucky to stumble across Kamaro mask guy because I was going to the graveyard late before the 2nd day, didn't expect him to be in the spot where Shero (Stone Mask guard) used to be. Cons: Ok. In the first cycle Having to wait for the final 12 hours extra sped up to go into the Bombers underground hideout to do a stupid block puzzle push with a Wallmaster hanging around to get a stray fairy (blocked by a Skulltula you gotta speed fast through cause of no magic to kill) to obtain magic from the Great Fairy, and if you mess up, you have to start the whole ordeal all over again from day 1 (But can use Grandma stories and Scarecrow to speed up time again). Having no hints to let/help you know the lottery shop was changed into the "Town Museum" but figured it out cause the door was chained close to go inside. To go inside to obtain the Deku Mask. Crouch stab was taken out of the game (I guess to avoid people from using bomb hovers?). Gossip stones give useless tips or no tips in the game just to annoy the player even with Mask of Truth. Wasn't a fan of Shero (Stone Mask guard) being where the Bean guy used to be in Deku Palace grotto, but was good to already have Lens of Truth cause something seemed suspicious about the spot. Putting invisible switches inside the Swamp Spider House is a big NO! even if you had the Lens of Truth to see it, how could the player even know to check for that? And you need to beat the Spider house to get the Bow and do other areas of the game because you cant make it pass the Fire Wizzrobe inside the Swamp Temple until you get Ice Arrows so you cant beat him, so this part involved ALOT of backtracking. After finding a well hidden hookshot, I went to Ocean spider house to see if there was another trick up the rom hackers sleeve, and this one just pissed me off, How I was able to get the Ice Arrows was nice but how are you suppose to know to use Garo mask to summon a Garo Master to give you a key to unlock a door and to get the Zora mask? And to summon the Garo Master it has to be on the 1st day, not 2nd or 3rd. Like I said no hint no nothing... just more annoyance with this rom, and pulls off the same thing in Secret Shrine in Ikana. This game also had a nag for always having to use Powder Keg for things, like opening Spider House, path to Ikana and so on. Ocean spider house is missing 1 skulltula, so you can't obtain the Giant's wallet. Speaking of busted, you need 1 of the Zora eggs from the clock town museum to get New Wave Bosa Nova song, you need to do some bizarre stuff inside the museum, than get the room key from at Stock Pot Inn on day 1 to access that part of the museum, plus you need to beat Snowhead to make it spring and get 3 eggs from the area as Zora. As if Swamp Temple wasn't bad enough dealing with Fire Wizzrobe that can only Die to Ice Arrows, you throw another one into Pirates Fortress? if you have no magic or arrows you're stuck and have to Soar out and go back there, Oh and you need Stones Mask to get past a lone Gerudo guard that leads to the open area of Gerudo guards and the multiple entrances to the eggs because she cant be stunned and you cant sneak past her unless you have the mask, it's required. Ikana castle was busted too. Had to land on switch, leave the castle, climb back up to land on the same switch again to remove a block you usually move with Goron, So I don't know what was up with that, and having to talk to a Gibdo who wants "Beans" to open the Stone Tower, and a big poe to flip the tower? not to mention 2 big poes if you want to get all the Strays to flip it again. What kind of blasphemy they had to make you do to finish this game. The Moon was the absolute worse of the whole game, you have to beat each trail to get to the Majora fight, Deku Trail you have to randomly throw out the Deku pipes and play "Song of Storms" to spawn a Deku flower and do a crap maze puzzle with more hidden switches, Goron trail not as bad just another Goron pound puzzle, Zora trail was just trail and error until you got the right path, but my biggest issue was when you get to the Stone Tower trail, you need to have a powder keg to get through a door, if you don't have that, you have to go back in time and get it, redo the whole 3 trails again use the powder keg to than get to a Gibdo who than wants "Beans" But wait! There's more! In a couple rooms You have to fight a Guerdo Thieve and if you loss you get to do it all over again, and another Gibdo who also wants a "Fish" But something I noticed If you already given the Gibdo mask to a moons child you are completely soft-locked and cant Soar or Song of Time out and have to reset the game ALL over again! Which is just a major complete fail to this rom. This game did have some good ideas somewhat early on than later just to find out it is busted, I actually finished all the Masks and Heart Pieces I could get before I even finished the first dungeon, even saving 8000 rupees to get a Heart Container banker award. The custom dungeon designs were a ok change for the first 2 dungeons, don't know why he didn't change the 3rd or 4th? Also, Some temples are missing stray fairies (Woodfall & Snowhead). The Fierce Deity mask is in the overworld and not the moon, I think it's because this game was incomplete, You cant get all the masks (All Night's Mask) because you cant get the Giants Wallet, I checked every grotto in this game and extra spots and could not find all the Heart Pieces, I was missing (excluding the Moon Heart pieces) 2 Heart Pieces (Which I think is what you get from the All Night's Mask checks which I couldn't get). I'm sorry, but I would not recommend this game to anybody, I wasted a good 30+ Hours of my life playing this game. There is WAY to much backtracking in it. Do you want people enjoying your game you made? This wasn't fun or challenging, just tedious for the player wanting to enjoy a good game that wasn't. It is beatable, playable, but not 100% completable, just totally broken. I love Majoras Mask, it's one of my favourite 3D Zelda games of all time and nice to see some hacks made for it. But don't even bother with this game, sorry for the large review rant and the person who wants to play this game reading this, but you're better off playing Majoras Mask "Master Quest" and not this game. 3/10
| Not all ideas are good ones | Shonen Bat | 2019-05-01 | Version 2.5.2 |
After blundering around for eight hours to get the items needed to beat the *first* dungeon, it has one reasonable room before throwing an invincible Wizzrobe at you while you try to light a bunch of torches quickly. There are a lot of fun and creative ideas in this hack but situations like that are all too frequent and make it not worth the time to play as it is now.
| Phew.. Simply.. AMAZING!! | Final Boss | 2019-04-24 | Version 2.5.2 |
First, let me thank you for remodeling/improving upon one of my most beloved childhood favorites. I love the way you made each form function with basic combos that fit each form. The jumping ability allows for so much more in he way of exploration as well as fighting, and I would love to be able to play other Zelda 64 hacks that work this way. Beautifully executed and even Fierce Diety is fixed (much as can be for now anyway ;P), these changes alone would be more than enough, but the challenge is what made me sink over 100 hours into your hack. I still had to look up YouTube letsplays for some parts, and I HATE doing that! ^_^;; Tl;dr: You will almost definitely need walkthrough help. But so much is changed in the game it's worth re-exploring the land of Termina!
| Challenging but has problems | Rouge2 | 2018-04-23 | Version 2.5.2 |
The game definitely delivers on being challenging with me failing the first three days. Problems with the hack is that you put the first stray fairy that would only take a miracle to get to and why was the Kikori Sword in a chest to begin with, I had the Razor Sword and got bumped back down to Kikori level.
| Some changes aren't welcome | Lutherian | 2018-04-20 | Version 2.5.2 |
Why did you have to add a useless herse to access Clocktown's fairy that requires TWO jumps to get through ? Why did you have to hide the stray fairy so hard when the first day is literally the most annoying part of OG Majora's Mask ? Moving some Mojo "plant jump" in Clocktown was kind of useless and felt more like a chore to every one who already played Majora's Mask. Also, adding tons of Sheika Hint stones in places where they don't belong (the bank ?!) feel useless. Some changes are welcome, others, clearly not.
