Hack description

Welcome to the Sequel of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Snes! Join Captain Toad in his adventures in Dinosaur Land!

Thank you PaperWario for drawing the Captain Toad sprites, also thank you kaitri for pointing out silly mistakes in v1.0

It should be pointed out that ZSNES is not an accurate emulator and will not run this hack. This is V1.2 and sprites should no longer disappear.

I loved the hack, had a good time. Thanks!CRT_rex2024-03-29Version 1.2

I played both of your hacks back to back while streaming it live and they were both great. Played on real hardware using the FXPAK-PRO. I found all the levels to be enjoyable, and while some of the challenges were tough, they required me to think and get good at. Didn't have to look anything up at all on either game. Some levels were hard, but in an NES-style kind of way, meaning, they took a little effort and it felt great beating them. Thank you very much for making this hack, I appreciate it. It's Captain Toad in 2D, what's not to love? I recommend it. Didn't find anything out there that matches this hack as far as being Captain Toad. It was a blast.

Cool Idea, Bad ExecutionPowerPanda2018-05-19Version 1.1

I wish there were another option under recommendations between "Yes" and "No" that meant, "Recommended for hackers of this game". If you are working on a hack, it would be one you should definitely check out, as it has quality ideas on display, but it is not, in an of itself, worthy of recommendation to a wider audience.

Captain Toad SNES II takes the physics of Mario World, but removes the ability to jump and run. The game is then a puzzle collect-athon in levels that are only a few screens large. You must collect the cherries, the potions, and the coins in order to activate the door. Also, your only weapons are the vegetables you pull up from the ground. From a conceptual standpoint, it's quality hacking, and I hope someone takes the same ideas and run with it. However, you quickly realize that the coins, potions, and cherries are all functionally the same. I never understood why there were 3 different items.

The true reason I can't recommend this though is the level designs. They are not informed by the gameplay, and will make you re-do half the stage for making tiny mistakes. I actually had to look up a youtube video to get past the first stage, since the game never explains to you that even though you can't jump, you CAN HOLD the jump button to bounce higher on note blocks. Enemies are also a one-hit KO, so you'll be re-doing stages a lot.

Some note must be made about the bugs. I cannot get this to run on ZSNES at all. SNES9X seems to work, but in level 2 I started to run into invisible enemies that caused a lot of deaths.

So can I recommend it? If you are looking to make a similar hack, there's a lot of great ideas here. If you're looking to just play a fun game, there are other hacks to look for. I would love to see someone take the underlying hacking and make some good levels with it.
