I played through all 32 levels of this rom just now and my conclusion is that this is a solid game through and through! It runs smoothly, contains no glitches and contains a well balanced difficulty. It also has some good level designs! Exactly what a SMB1 redesigned level hack should be! Great Job!

This romhack doesn't get talked about much. It's neither the first nor the best SMB romhack out there. But still, it's staggering to think that this romhack came out closer to the release of the original Super Mario Bros than it did to when I played it. At the time when this was released, the following were true: (1) The internet was not yet a staple in every home (2) Not all computers came with built-in sound cards (3) You needed the serial port on the sound card to plug in a controller (4) Most emulators ran in DOS (5) The main NES emulator was Nesticle. (6) Most SMB level editing utilities didn't exist yet (YY presumably made YY-ME for the purposes of this hack). When you look at this hack in that historical context, it's a lot more impressive.

This hack doesn't try to do anything too crazy. It's just a level pack for Super Mario Bros. It's a very good level pack though. The difficulty is about halfway between SMB and TLL, hitting an interesting sweet spot. Like the original SMB, some level layouts get reused. However, you won't hit this until world 6. 7-1 is a bit of a glitchy level. Aside from that though, if you saw someone playing this game, you might not even know it's a romhack. The levels feel natural and smooth.

So, it's 2022. Should you play this hack? Sure! What have you got to lose? It's the same SMB you know and love, but it's got new levels. But more so, it's impressive to see what one person was able to do way back in 1998, before some of us even knew about emulation.

This was a very well put-together SMB1 romhack, and feels like official sequel which is saying something. Everything I encountered was very well made and some challenges were not crazy or frustrating and rivals on official difficulty level of SMB1.

Overall this was a really fun romhack, and I can definitely recommend this one.
