Hack description

This small hack only changes the control setup for the game, to something closer to the newer GBA Metroid games. The opening Options menus have been altered to show the new controls for the game. Item pickup messages and Japanese text have not been altered however.

Good alternative, but not necessarily "better"ClaudeDixon2022-04-13Version 1.2

Does some things better, but some things worse. I'll list some cons:

•Run/walk isn't a toggle as advertised, you need to hold a button. Still, auto-run is a worthy replacement for Moonwalk.

•Aimlock+changing aim angle via d-pad is useful, but honestly so was being able to *immediately* aim down in some situations.

•X-ray being its own separate thing is a plus as it frees up inventory space, but it replaces the item cancel function, which I find useful.

•Certain changes like easier wall jumping more so casualize the game than take actual flawed elements from the original and fix them. If anything, the game requiring more skill is a plus and doesn't need to be changed.

Overall though, there are enough positives to make this worth playing as an alternative, but not a definitive replace.

Fantastic - One of the Best Improvement HacksDoomed2014-02-05-

I don't remember Super Metroid having *bad* controls, but after playing with Control Freak, I don't want to go back. The serviceable but sometimes clunky controls of the original game have been adjusted to do exactly what the player wants, when they want it.

I was worried that I would abuse the new "brandish" function - but in actuality I just never used it. Oops. If you want to master the new controls, check this page for information once you've progressed in the game enough to make use of the advanced techniques.

As someone who has now only finished Super Metroid once, I appreciate the changes to "aim up", "select item", and "X-Ray".

Anyone playing Super Metroid, even for the first time, should use this hack.
