Hack description

Note: The project comes with a separate .txt inside for the new locations of many RAM values used since most of the original Game Genie codes will no longer function due to some major structural changes. Use this file for various cheating needs.

A large modification of Mega Man X3 that allows Zero to be fully playable to summarize. There are countless new features including a removal of the Password System in exchange for a Save/Load System. Check the README for a more in-depth look.

This version is considered separate from the original Zero Project since this one has such an entirely rewritten system from the ground up and separate features that people may or may not like compared to the prior version.

Source Code is available on the github. Although, it's very messy.

One of the best hack ever!Rhvn101202024-01-18Version 4.6a

This is an incredible hack which literally remake MMX3 into a completely new game. Everything down to the minor details was polished. Some interesting things that I found when playing the game such as X's Lv.2 Charged shot actually ignore I-frames. In NG+ mode, Zero even fires a blue wave. In late game, X feel much more OP than Zero so much that it doesn't feel worth playing as Zero.

Huge Improvement over the original. However....Kurobon942024-01-05Version 4.6a

Although it's great to see that the game has now been balanced to fully support Zero gameplay, there is only one big issue that bothers me:

X's Body Part doesn't decrease damage taken, this armor part has completely lost effectivity, making X take the same amount of damage as if he didn't have it for the first place, only working when acquiring Golden Armor. I believe this might be a glitch, since according to the readme, only X's shield that used to appear upon taking damage was supposed to be removed, while supposed to have increased defense.

Once again, a great hack overall, but with a nitpick regarding on what i mentioned. If you're going to play as X, i say to stick to the original, otherwise, go for it.

Highest quality hack I've ever seenEldiran2023-07-02Version 4.6a

This hack does everything it says and does it with a level of polish rarely seen in rom hacks. The best way to replay Mega Man X3!

Absolutely Stunning HackBeeperoniThe3rd2022-10-15Version 4.4a

I am floored with the great quality of this ROM Hack that somehow managed to make a game I already liked, a game I already love. Being able to play as Zero fully, and just swapping between both him and X on the fly is something I really wanted in X3. Sure, perhaps while Zero's kit isn't changed that much in this hack, I still really enjoyed playing as him, and in some areas he has a few things over X even!

Although, it's a bit jarring that the text for Zero is changed, and has more "Expressive" dialogue. While for X, it's just the same old wooden dialogue with minimal changes... This is honestly probably just a nit-pick, but it's something that sub-consciously bothered me with it's inconsistency. But regardless, I still find this hack pretty fun to play! It is in fact, the definitive way to play X3.

This is what I dreamed about Megaman X3!Lobberuno2022-01-07Version 4.4a

When I started playing, my first feeling about the gameplay was Capcom should have done the game this way, like you finish the game once then as bonus you can choose Zero. That freedom to change between X or Zero during the game is awesome. Somehow, I miss the original Frog-Robot walking, but I'm totally agree that is a great control improvement. The Zero Weapon Get art is incredible! The dialogues on capsules, the improvements, the sprites are awesome. And as bonus, post-game possibilities and so I understand now why a save/load system is better than a password-system.

I read the notes included and the author added possible future additions, like a difficulty setting. About this, I would set the difficulty mod based on how much HP have and damage the enemies can do. However, if you want to do a big mod, you might want to change the sprite colors of the enemies or even bosses to a more intimidating one but this means more hours of work invested.

But, in the bottom end, this is the way Capcom should made MMX3. I really hope you and this project can be playable on a console. Congrats for the great work!

Pure gold hack. Makes a great game even better.Rewqq112021-10-12Version 4.4a

The hack has everything I would have done in it already.

There is a small glitch with the Frog Ride Armor when walking left or right normally. The sprite animation disappears when walking. I assume that there is no art for the Frog Armor walking since it used to only be able to hop as I remember.

Brilliant RedesignAceearly19932021-07-22Version 4.4a

If you love Mega Man X3 or the entire X series this is a hack you simply can't miss by any excuse. Aside from Zero being fully playable through the entire campaign, the overall system received a well crafted redesign, fixed literally anything flawed in the original, and added some cute extras (a certain enhancement can be applied to Zero's saber to generate shockwaves in New Game+ after meeting specific conditions) In general this is what X3 should be and deserves to be, reviews and words cannot 100% justify how brilliant this hack is and how well it improved from original, you must gain it through your actual experiences in gameplay. Also good luck to find a rom compatible with this patch, the process is very hard and costs me two whole days to get a workable one.

The definitive way to play this gameCowcode232021-07-21Version 4.4a

This year was when I decided to finish the X series in its entirety so when I had to play X3 I chose this hack. Without a doubt the best decision I have made if I had to choose the best of this hack is the option of being able to save manually and being able to change from X to Zero at any time, I also loved how comfortable it is to use Zero

Unbelievably polished, amazing!Tyler_Nerdin2020-12-09Version 4.1a

I can't believe how well done this hack is. It has completely replaced the original for me.

The text has been cleaned up for playing as either character. Boss fights can be done as either.

The capsules are only for X, except the secret end capsule which gives Zero his black armor as well as X's golden armor. There's even a save function and New Game + mode, no more need for passwords.

This has 100% replaced the original for me, it's unbelievably polished.

Never play as X againSupergamerguy2020-12-07Version 4.1a

This hack is how Mega Man X3 should have been all along. The ability to play as Zero throughout the entire game, complete with subweapons and pickups (just like the later games), and switch between him and X whenever you want, is the best way to play this game in modern day. The Z-Saber and double jump make for a fresh experience that helps with the flow and variety of each stage, even going so far as to fix issues with the ride armors, allowing them to be actually useful during a playthrough. Never try playing the original game again, stick with Zero in this game and have a lot more fun than ever before!

Excellent hack!!HellboundHero2020-11-12Version 4.1a

Until recently, I became aware of this version, I was using V3, and I must say I love every change, the save file format is just perfect.

Anyways, great hack, definitely the substitute for the original.

Replaces the original as the definitive version.MisterGuyMan2020-01-28Version 4.0

I liked MMX3. The game was good enough but much weaker than the other two games of the original trilogy. This mod makes it not just a worthy sequel but possibly the best of the 3.

The ability to play as Zero, and a balanced alternative to X rather than a mere reskin, is game-changing. X is like Batman who can exploit weaknesses to win battle with prep. Zero is Wolverine who goes into battle blades swinging. Using Zero is like playing the game for the first time.

Apart from Zero, small QoL changes are very welcome. New Game Plus and a save system are cherries on top of an already great improvement.

This hack does have nice QOL features like saving and being able to swap chips at will. That's great.

I guess the only real issues I have is the helmet chip regaining health at such a rapid pace. It seems way too fast, too easy to regain health with it. I'm also not really into the idea of making the golden armor easier to get. It's very cheap as it is.

Thanks.

X is not dead.StarWyvern2020-01-05Version 4.0

Any one else out there like being able to swap characters on the fly? I DO!!!

Remember playing other X games where you could replay the same levels with X and Zero in a single game session? Well this is 10x Better!!! Now one of my favorite Mega Man games of all time is worth replacing. What's that? Zero is better suited against this boss? X has the range to easily reduce numbers of this area? Not a problem! Would ya look at that? Would ya just look at it? Isn't it beautiful?

Any Mega Man X fan must also be a fan of playing as ZERO. And to be able to change between the two on the fly make this the innovative hack of the decade. Love the color changes for Zero's weapons, btw. I may be a year late, but this hack is still worth playing!

The Mega Man X3 experience everyone should try.Sonic109742019-12-03Version 4.0

Let it be known that I do not really like the original X3. I found it kinda dull, padded, and borderline frustrating with certain mechanics taken. However, not only did a dream of a fully playable Zero in X3 become a reality, but many other problems I have are fixed.

1) The obvious one: Zero. It's the partner mechanic that X7 started. Say what you will about that game, but a legit praise I have for that game is the partner system. Zero is amazing early on, since his buster and saber can deal with the annoying enemies that can make mincemeat out of you early on. And now I don't have to worry about making one wrong move and have Zero never come back for the rest of the game. He's balanced fairly to X (higher offense, mobility and max HP in exchange for lower defense, weapon conservation, and a larger hitbox), and he can grab items too! I adore that the Heart Tanks increase both lifebars on X & Zero. Contrast to X5, X6, and X7 where a Heart Tank only increases the one who grabs it, limiting your options. Sharing the Heart Tanks allows for more versatility in gameplay and makes it more fun.

2) Project Zero also pays attention to X as well and refined his armor to be more useful. The biggest change is the Buster upgrade, which no longer spreads its fire and misses almost everything. It now travels in a helix pattern, and hits multiple times (similar to X2's buster). If you know what you're doing, you can SHRED away Maverick health bars and destroy bosses in seconds. The Body upgrade no longer emits that annoying flashing shield, and functions almost identically to X1's Body upgrade. The Head upgrade doubles Special Weapon ammo (similar to X5 and X6). And finally, the Golden Armor is no longer locked out after entering a Chip capsule. So you can take advantage of the Chips and still access the Golden Armor for endgame.

3) Level design has been slightly changed to reduce backtracking. Backtracking was my biggest issue in X3, since there's so much of it, and it's very clearly padding. Project Zero trims the fat and fixes multiple issues related to backtracking. For example, the boulders in Tunnel Rhino can still be dropped by the charged Triad Thunder, but the Spinning Blades and the Z Saber can now cut the ropes, eliminating the need to backtrack to that stage at all (since you always have the Z Saber *wink wink*).The biggest change is the Ride Armors. You no longer need to get the Chimera Armor in Blast Hornet's stage to access the other Armors. Collecting an armor piece will give you immediate access to it, whether or not you already collected the Chimera Armor.

All of these changes make the experience much more manageable and gave me an appreciation of X3 that I never knew I could show.

The Definitive X3 ExperienceG30FF2019-05-30Version 4.0

I was already a fan of Mega Man X3, warts and all, but after playing this version of X3, I can't go back to the vanilla game. This just makes the existing game SO MUCH BETTER in practically every way. Even a standard X playthrough is improved by this hack's QOL changes! Highly recommended!

Awesome!KaiserHelder2019-05-12Version 4.0

From far is the best mod for MMX3. It's incredible to full play the game with Zero. It brings the game to a next level. I only have congratulations to those who created this hacking ROM. It's like a new game!

The QoL changes alone do wondersBassFace2019-01-14Version 4.0

It's rare that I've felt the need to comment on hacks. I've only felt compelled in recent times to either a) apply small quality of life hacks to already good games (SMAS, Super Metroid, ALTTP) or b) take on the few true diamonds of amazing hacks that provide a brand new game to romp through. It's been immensely pleasing to see many users coming to the aid of the X series to polish some of the roughest but most promising games in the series, namely this, X5, and X6.

And I'm even more pleased to say that, while many of X3's other overarching issues don't get tackled here, this project truly brings out some of the best in X3. The creator took a lot of time and care not only making Zero fully playable but providing clear distinctions between him and X. Don't mistake this as just a Zero hack! The changes to X's armor functions, especially his double buster shot, do wonders to smooth out the flow of the game. The implementation of X2's combo system, while a bit overpowered, makes combo shots with both X and Zero super satisfying to use. The change to ride armors where they're immediately usable upon obtaining one dramatically cleans up the vanilla game's awkward and annoying item collection structure. It's all enough to make for a far more enjoyable game.

Many of X3's understandably trickier issues like enemy variety, terrible damage scaling early to mid game, and lackluster level design aren't addressed but as something meant to be a base for future hacks, it's never something I expected of it. The most important thing it accomplishes is making X3 a fantastic game to play. It's one of the most well-rounded hacks out there and one of the best qualifiers for the Improvement category on here if you ask me.

Undoubtedly THE best version of MMX3!phantom_with_a_rose2018-12-17Version 4.0

With the option to switch back and forth between X and Zero throughout the game (instead of being limited to only getting to play as the latter in the opening stage), this feature alone is what the original version of the game SHOULD have been! The newest 4.0 patch release makes the experience even better than ever with a conveniently built-in 'Save' feature, which perfectly replaces the dated 'Password' system (no need to have a pen and paper nearby to write down all those numbers anymore) and just feels consistent with the 'Save' feature used in later MMX titles released on the Playstation. You owe it to yourself to play this version ASAP. Once you do, you will NEVER want to go back!

This hack revolutionises the game, allowing you to play as Mega Man or Zero. Adding save games, dialogue, everything!

Absolute definitive version of the game 10/10.

Great update to a great hackthecowwarrior2018-07-29Version 4.0

PROS:

  • Ability to play as Zero
  • Save system
  • New Game+
  • New dialogue
  • MSU-1 compatibility (I have not yet tested personally)
  • Gameplay tweaks to ride armor, sub tanks, upgrade chips, and X-buster functionality

CONS:

  • Minor bugs during my playthrough, nothing major
  • Zero feels nerfed (weakened Z-saber, increased ammo consumption, inability to use Hyper Crush, inability to charge special weapons, etc)

Overall I HIGHLY recommend this hack. It takes a flawed game and modifies it to live up to its original potential. Playing as Zero is a blast. The save system and all the information provided on the save screen is great. The author can't fix all of MMX3's inherent flaws, but this is about as close as anyone could possibly come. My only major concern is that the author is close to becoming a victim of feature creep. The significant nerfing of Zero feels very strange, especially since it was not present in previous versions. The readme mentions the author's desire to add more playable characters and mess with the story/ending, which both feel very unnecessary to me. I hope the author carefully considers "Can I" VS "Should I" in any future updates.

The DEFINITIVE version of MMX3 hands down!star_scream16462018-07-26Version 4.0

This hack by Justin3009 is simply amazing! He did what Capcom never did, and that was make Zero a REAL fully playable character like he should have always been in MMX3. Zero can fight bosses and get special weapons, and can now also obtain Sub-Tanks and Heart-Tanks as well. And the presentation is spot on since Zero now also has his own dialogue for scenes where you play as him and they fit his character perfectly! Like the intro stage, when he meets Vile Mk2 and you even get new dialogue from Dr.Light when you find one of his capsule as Zero. Zero even has his own get weapon portrait which fits right into the game and looks awesome!

Besides that Justin3009 also added a new save feature which looks very nice and clean. It shows you all your current progress, like how many Sub-Tanks or Heart Tanks you've collected or which Mavericks you've defeated and much more. Also included is a new game plus mode which is implemented very well and is very enjoyable just to see. There is also various improvements to the game which now make it very enjoyable when compared to the original. Like reducing backtracking by making it possible to use Zero's saber to destroy certain obstacles, like the boulder that needs to be destroyed in Tunnel Rhino's stage to get a Heart-Tank. And what I enjoy the most is that he changed X's Wave Shot when you combine both charge shots, which makes it more useful when compared to the original.

I could never beat Sigma in the original version of MMX3, but with these improvements I was finally able to beat him after so many years. If I had never played the original version of MMX3 and had been presented with this hack, I would never had thought that I was playing a hack! Since again the presentation is spot on and done in a very professional manner that one would think this was the original game that came out in 1995!

I don't think I see myself playing the original version of MMX3 ever again, unless I were to play it just for nostalgia. This is now the DEFINITIVE way to play this game and now brings it to the same level as the other two MMX games for the SNES.

A solid 10 out of 10!!!

Words cannot describe how much BETTER this hack feels compared to the original. But I will try my best.

When I first downloaded this, I had my doubts. Mega Man X3 isn't the best X series game out there, but it was good. This hack though... Perfection. It's the perfect mix of Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man X4 and Mega Man X3 in one (in my opinion). Absolutely love this hack.

Pros:

  • You can play as X and/or Zero
  • Saving system
  • New Game +
  • Zero's animations and weapon screens are amazing
  • The story text is perfect

Cons:

  • None that I can think of

Notes:

  • Not a huge fan of Zero's recolors when using weapons. But not a big deal since there is a separate patch for just that!

= The Hyper Cannon mode does nothing for Zero when selected (as far as I'm aware). I feel it should be just left out.

TL;DR: I highly recommend this hack. 10/10!

Undoubtedly The Hack of the Year, 2018Eldrethor2018-07-22Version 4.0

If this site had an award system, then the highest honors would go to Justin3009 without question. This is an absolutely ambitious hack that completely pulls Zero out of the sidekick role and places him on the same level playing field as X, going so far as being able to start the game as Zero, having his own portrait displayed when a weapon is acquired, and given his own unique dialog that fits his character perfectly. He also gets bonus points for his excellent use of grammar and spelling.

But that was just the original intent of his work; he took his hack to some unimaginable heights of awesomeness.

Justin went even further and replaced the password system with a full internal save/load feature. On one hand, it does away with the ability to skip straight to the last Sigma stages with full weapons and upgrades, but on the other hand, not having to jot down passwords far outweighs this, and puts it more in line with the later X games. I also feel that the first page of five data slots is plenty, but it's nice having the whopping twenty for players who can make use of it.

The same bugfixes and balances changes from the last version are still present, along with some further refinements and some much-welcomed quality-of-life changes. Granted, the base game still has its glaring faults, but these changes make the game much more enjoyable than without. Heck, he even a New Game+ that allow players to replay the game with all items, armor, and upgrades intact, which is an absolute treat.

If there are any bugs to be had, I haven't encountered any; Zero's mouth moves in places where he is given his new dialog, saving and loading works perfectly, the sound and graphics look clean, and everything plays smoothly.

No scoring system of any kind would do justice to the amount of quality and work that was put into this hack; this is a stellar job that transcends hacking and transforms the original base game into something far superior. Hands down, this is a highly-recommended upgrade that makes the original game laughably disappointing.
