Hack description

A patch thought to be long lost to the void of the internet, it's the return of ShaneM's "Super Mario Bros. 3 Extended Edition"!

This is a purification work. This is a hack of SMB3 that fixes glitches and restores beta features. The original SMB3 had 90 levels, while this one has 107. Most of the lost levels have been restored, while adding 3 e-levels from the GBA version: Super Mario Advance 4. The lost Hammer Bros. of World 7 has also been restored. Previously unused tiles and graphics have been utilized. The biggest feature: the lost level "Parabeetle Plains"! The new levels have been given an unused Ghost House sprite on the overworld maps. Features, as well as the original damage system have been restored from the original Japanese version, too.

There are two lost enemies, too: gold Cheep-cheeps and green Parabeetles.

Patches have been made for both the PRG0 & PRG1 ROMs.

I tried this hack and actually loved it.Vallenatero20152021-05-02Version rev A

Despite the difficulties in some levels, I loved this extended version of Super Mario Bros. 3, since the hacker included levels that Nintendo may not have been able to, such as the lost levels, in addition, they remade some extra levels of Super Mario Advance 4 (also known as E-levels) and created their own level. Congratulations, keep it up.

Wow, if that's what the original developers meant, I'm quite disappointed. I'm actually glad that those lost levels were removed from the game, the overall experience felt broken for me. The difficulty is no problem, I'm accustomed to the Japanese damage system, but the aesthetic and layout of the stages are very different compared with the rest of the levels, so you won't feel that they're coherent with the map's theme. But if you're looking for some challenge, this is your kind of game. You can play this patch out of curiosity, but for me, I didn't feel I missed anything of value.

P.S.: Too many parabeetles levels! What were you thinking, Nintendo?! Also, if you love water levels, this will be your game. There are lots of them. Yay.

Original damage system = Not fairRetroGameFan2018-09-29Version rev A

I liked Super Mario Bros. 3 a lot more when it had 3 HP for Mario and Luigi instead of 2. I believe that 2 HP, no matter what form Mario or Luigi are in, is unfair. I understand the 2 HP being in the original Super Mario Bros. since that game wasn't as hard and Fire Mario/Luigi going back to Super form must have been hard to implement at that time. But in the world of SMB3, it can be a piece of work, for instance, to work your way back up to the Tanooki suit, because Small Mario/Luigi can only power up to Super form in the levels, while getting power-ups from Toad's item house is finite and you can only have so many at once. And visits to Toad's item houses are also finite, considering you can visit a house only once. In fact, the Western Super Mario World damage system had to be updated to 3 HP in Super Mario Advance 2 for the Game Boy Advance because Cape or Fire Mario/Luigi going straight back to Small form was still too hard.

So I'm guessing that this extended version of SMB3 would probably be too hard for casual gamers like myself, and others such as beginners, to play. Now, please, make open the option to maintain the Western damage system, in additional patches or something like that, or I'm not going to play it in its entirety.

This is better than the original.ReggieTheRetrogaminDork2018-09-15Version rev A

The new additional levels are in unexpected areas in the map and the sprite representing the new level is kinda odd; But with that, I can give it a free pass. This actually is better than the original Japanese version, US version, and European version. I like the subtle additions of the Japanese version and the save feature. I played all 107 levels and enjoyed myself. The challenge put in that made the Japanese version harder is welcomed here. This pushed me to use more stored items more often and not to hoard too much. The new levels are also a great welcome to the game. I waited over 20 years to play the Parabettle plains level and enjoyed it. The new World 8-3 is also a great welcome too. This is a great modification of SMB3 and I prefer this over the originals.

Out Of PlaceSephirous2018-09-08Version rev A

There are a few things that seemed to go wrong while I was playing this game. The first noticeable problem that occurs is the graphics on the map screen tend to hang over outside of the Map boundaries causing graphic glitches. The extra stages seem completely out of place, There are a couple new ones in Desert Land that look like they should be in Sky Land instead. The first extra stage in Grass Land has enemies in it that I am pretty sure shouldn't be introduced until later on. Bob Bombs are usually a more difficult enemy to fight against and aren't usually introduced in the first 4 Levels. The unused Castle Sprite is nice but really should be used for unused or custom castle stages not out doors kinda stuff. Just feels wrong. The extra world doesn't show up on the (Whistle) world select screen as I had expected. This kind of downs the excitement as for the player to get to the new world he/she must first get through all the glitches and out of place feelings just to see what the new world has to offer. I realize it's probably meant for a strong build up, but only ends up being a boring journey through the old stuff just to see something new. The save feature is nice, However the all stars slot option could have been better. I was also hoping for the unused title music to be heard during the opening. This hack is a good shot at what it was intended for, but just not my cup of tea. Projects can always evolve. So maybe a revision in the future could be something nice to see at some point.

Totally recommended for those who want to revisit and explore the new levels.

I wish if a optional patch for restoring back the damage system. The most infamous levels are way too punishable when you revert to small Mario/Luigi!

Totally worth playing it.vhr21212018-09-04Version rev A

And here I thought I'd never see the day which this hack would become available again. This hack sure makes honor to its "extended" namesake. And that's because it DOES extend the game with lots of new stuff added to it.

This is something that is indeed worth of playing it. Especially if you want a bit more of the original game but can't help but feel that you are not quite ready yet to the LOTS of hacks that are available here. Give it a shot! you won't regret it.
