Good hack, but beware of 4-3TheDaverz2024-05-24Version 1.0

The hack is great for 2 players and i didn't encounter too many glitches, but use the warp zone in 4-2, as 4-3 has no platform below the flapgpole, making it impossible to beat the level. other than that it is great.

Like it was inteded, almost...GREY582022-07-03Version 1.0

Actually super impressive hack. It plays almost like it was intended to be 2 player. Only encountered one issue: sometimes the screen doesn't scroll all the way to the right during Bowser fights, which means you can't break the bridge. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Other than that, it's flawless.

p.s. Also super simple cheats for this hack, if you just want to have fun in coop.

Nearly Perfect with issues...NES Universe2021-11-18Version 1.0

This hacks' simultaneous 2 Player utilizes the game engine seamlessly, with both players needing to consent to travel down a vertical pipe to maintain the flow, then allowing one player to leave a horizontal while waiting for the other.

Mario & Luigi's Firepower suit has an extra palette for Mario which is a tone darker.

Different to modern simultaneous Super Mario Bros, this ROMhack does not include "bubble feature" or a hurry up function for players too slow to enter a pipe, further on if one player dies they do not respawn.

For the best experience I recommend playing with someone with some veteran knowledge as if the player struggles alone in the game then they may slow down a more able player.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★

Nice hack but would be perfect if Mario and Luigi have own separated color paletteFoxster2021-08-29Version 1.0

Nice mod to play in Co-op with a friend but after that Mario and Luigi takes the Fire Flower it becomes difficult to distinguish them.

Can we PLEASE add a continue for us losers who can't keep up?yeppo2020-12-20Version 1.0

So this hack is absolutely great. The only issues I've seen is using pipes (but it might just be one needs to do this exactly together for this to work, not sure), and, more importantly, unequal player levels leading to a poor experience for one of the two. I don't mind the level resetting when one player loses, because it forces players to play together. But if one player loses more often than the other, then they end up sitting there watching the other play. It would be great to be able to add a credit, so to speak, and rejoin the game. I mean, the whole point is to be play together, right? I don't think it would make the game to easy to beat, since if you keep losing and resetting, you'll give up at some point anyway.

What do you think?

Never play the original game againSupergamerguy2020-12-04Version 1.0

I don't know why this wasn't done sooner officially from Nintendo. Ever since this first game, players have wanted a co-op Mario experience that wouldn't properly come until a few decades later. But now this hack goes back to right the wrongs and make the ultimate Mario 2 player experience! Getting to play with 2 players simultaneously makes this game so much more fun for a modern audience, and little touches like Luigi having a different Fire Flower palette than Mario has shows just how much the creators put into their great efforts to fix the experience. Hopefully a hack like this comes out for Mario 2 (Mario USA in japan) and/or Mario 3 in the future to compete the trilogy of nostalgia!

Childhood dream come true...Polioliolio2020-03-08Version 1.0

I love it! It's more or less the definitive version of the game, and the version I dreamed of as a child. It works, it's simple. It's what you want when you select '2 players' in an NES game!

There's one problem I've seen. The Koopa Troopas in the underground area (1-2) are the wrong color. They're the color of their above ground versions. Is this a consequence of this hack, or just a slip up?

Fun, but Needs WorkAgentCPU02019-04-09Version 1.0

Playing with another person is awesome, I like this. But I do have an issue. The mapper this hack uses, my NES Classic doesn't like. Don't know anything about hacking other than applying patches, so I don't know if changing the mapper is possible. Other than that, an enjoyable hack.

Revolution Super Mario!pleasejust2019-03-27Version 1.0

Revolutionary and unprecedented indeed. Great, fun teaching tool. Teachers should make students play this. Parents should make their kids play this... Good god... co-operation. Harmony. Peace on earth... the very evolution of the human species. Years from now, as people dwell in utopian, anti-gravity floating cities, they will ask. "How did we get here?" Answer. Super Mario Bros. - Two player hack!!

A feature, not a bugwolpak2018-12-04Version 1.0

For those who wish that the level wouldn't restart when one dies, I consider this a feature, not a bug.

a) it adds difficulty (which is always fun)

b) more importantly, one of my jerk kids can't just push forward and the other ones dies and finishes the level. Now those kids have to PLAY together. Omg, I love it.

Never thought I would see the day!MaynoGonzalez2018-10-26Version 1.0

This hack is truly a childhood dream come true, and one i used to think about frequently (at least after playing NSMB Wii) at that.

In practice, it is just as fun as I expected, but a tad more challenging.. the hack forces the players to act strategically, as the field of view isn't very big, and it's difficult to get two players together who are both very good at SMB and/or know the level design by heart.. and even if you can manage that, your differing ideas as you proceed will likely make the game more difficult anyway.

If you're a veteran player, you'll likely find yourself giving your less-experienced partner first grabs on all the powerups, as well as trying to make sure they aren't tripped up by unforeseen pitfalls and enemies.

One of the only potential flaws in the game (depending on how you choose to look at it) is that the level restarts when one player dies. It would be nice to see this changed so that the level continues with a single player, and the "dead" player returns for the next level, but this is admittedly a minor nitpick.

Overall, this is an excellent hack that helps to revitalize the game for players like myself who know the levels inside and out. I would recommend it to everyone, as it is one of the hacks truly deserving of the "Improvement" designation.

Corpse Grinder and Ti are the real MVPs, and I would love to see them make more NES games co-op compatible like they did with Bomberman and this game.

Well..Teeporage7772018-10-24Version 1.0

Well this came as a surprise to me. Absolutely awesome. There is not much to say that every one else hasn't already gone over. Really cool hack and a great base for someone to make a puzzle game maybe. Can't wait to see what people do we this.

I totally recommend this hack to anyone that would like to play with a friend.

Solid hack. Dream come truesegwayspeedracer2018-10-22Version 1.0

Pluses:

Wow this feels very responsive. I didn't experience any lag and is VERY fun. Way better than PC programs built from scratch to deliver this experience. Recommended as a party game to surprise your friends. The 2 player co op adds a whole new replayability to the game.

Quirks:

Players MUST cooperate and communicate! Levels only end when both players contact the axe or flag, meaning simple bowser fights such as world 4-4 can be nightmarish because both players have to coordinate their pass/run through bowser. Makes for an amazing and unique experience... But will be mentally draining if you just hope to smash through levels uncoordinated. This game does a great job teaching communication.

Be careful, both players need to agree to enter a pipe. For example, in 1-2, luigi went through the exit to end the level and mario went forward to the warp zone. This ended up with mario stuck for 200 seconds at the ceiling until TIME UP because neither could advance. This is not a negative, but players need to be mindful of the hack's quirks.

Path Forward:

This mod will be a MUST HAVE CORNERSTONE for jumpstarting personal rom hacks if it will one day support SMB Utility and Frantiks Workshop. I am 100% certain this mod will become timeless if it is accessible for other modders to use as a template.

Also, may be a good idea to bump the starting lives to 5, so inexperienced little bros can join in and survive the retro genre. May disrupt the "purity" of the mod but having that as an extra patch will allow this mod to reach a broader audience.

Lots Of Spills And Laughs For TwoEldrethor2018-10-21Version 1.0

This hack is peculiar in the sense that it shouldn't really mesh on a technical level, but is insanely fun in practice, and Corpse Grinder did a fantastic job making it work.

The game's levels were designed to be played by one player at a time, and throwing in a second player technically breaks that design. For example, power-ups and coins become more limited as they have to be split between both players, precision platform jumps become much harder with respect to the way the camera scrolls, and the list goes on. On paper, it's not great.

But in practice, it's a hilariously fun experience because it's Super Mario Bros.; the game is so memorable that most gamers can probably beat the first level in their sleep.

By throwing Player-2 into the fray, the result is a game that's fun and familiar but feels fresh and new, and a big part of that experience is the need for new co-op strategies to get through each level. With a second player onscreen, both players must now decide who gets what power-ups, and how best to tackle stages with perilous platform placements. Having the camera no longer tethered to one player also means that both players have to work with one another so as to avoid oncoming enemies and obstacles.

If there are any gripes to be had, there are two that come to mind, and the first is the camera: in a one-player experience, the locked camera position is tied into a player's timing when anticipating oncoming hazards, but since the stages now have to scroll with respect to both players, it makes for a somewhat disorienting experience that takes some getting used to. However, this is a minor gripe at best, and it only reinforces the need for both players to cooperate with one another.

The other gripe is that the stage comes to an end when a player dies, instead of continuing on with the other player. Again, this reinforces the need for both players to work together, but it's a bit jarring on the overall momentum of the game, especially coming off the reigns of the later games in the series, where players respawn onscreen. Ideally, it would be great if respawning could be implemented in this hack as well, but not having it doesn't cut into the fun all that much.

Overall, this is a great hack that breathes new life into a game that will never get old but is very familiar in the gaming sphere. Despite its minor flaws, it's a great two-player experience where you can quibble with a friend over limited power-ups, cheap deaths, and hazard dodging in a game that we all know and love. For that, it deserves a high score of 9/10.

Not perfect, but still impressive.Diddy64wii2018-10-19Version 1.0

There's only one issue about this hack : When one of the players loses a live, both players must restart the level. Even if the other player is still fine. At least, the other player who didn't lose a life keeps his powerup if he has one, so...there's that at least...

Other than that, the hack is perfectly functional, and managed to fix the biggest flaw of the original game : The lack of a simultaneous two-player mode.

Great idea!! Amazing 33 years later thank you so much! Congratulations

TOTAL MEGAHYPER COOLNESS!!!Szemigi2018-10-15Version 1.0

I'm 100% amazed and I didn't think that anybody would ever do this in Super Mario Bros. Congratulations! You wrote history in my opinion. Nice job!

Holy crud, this is awesome!SaveState2018-10-15Version 1.0

This is a revolutionary and unprecedented hack! It seems too good to be true! I've been waiting for something like this for a long time, and hope to see this in upcoming hacks!

One thing: If a player dies, the level starts over, as opposed to the level continuing with the remaining player alive, a feature in other simultaneous multiplayer Mario games. Please add this into the hack if possible.

Also, a suggestion; This is in no way a drawback, but it would be freakin' awesome: I think there should be a choice between simultaneous and turn-based modes on the menu screen.

Other than that, I recommend this to EVERYONE, period. I can't believe this wasn't in the original game! I hope to see this put onto other classic games, like SMB3!

Every NES platformer should be like thisNotthisguy2018-10-15Version 1.0

One of the biggest flaws with the original Super Mario Bros is that the multiplayer mode only let 1 player play at a time. Like the description says, it lets two player play simultaneously.

Multiplayer mode is incredibly well executed compared to the NEW Super Mario Bros platformers. It does a lot of things better than NSMB.

  • The screen doesn't zoom out when you get too far away from each other.
  • The action is constant unlike NSMB.
  • There is no input lag or cpu hiccups whatsoever.
  • Mario and Luigi don't collide like how they do in NSMB, which makes these zones a lot easier to clear.
  • Lives are not shared between Mario and Luigi. Veteran players should probably let newer players take the first power ups you see.

The simultaneous multiplayer in this hack is implemented so well, it transforms Super Mario Bros into one of the best multiplayer games for the console.

It would be amazing to see Kirby's Dream Land, Mega Man and SMB3 two player hacks.
