ROM Information
Platform Nintendo Entertainment SystemHack description
This is a hack that ports over Square-Enix's official script from their mobile remake nearly perfectly (give or take about 5% due to technical limitations). The rom is expanded, doubling the script size! The title screen is altered to say DRAGON QUEST. Monster, Item, and Spell names match current DQ Localization standards.Screenshots

| If you want consistency with later localized games, this is for you | 2022-05-21 | Version 1.3c | |
I got into Dragon Quest a little later on, after the series got it's more modern localization. I like it's modern localization, even the so called "childish" spell names. It adds on to the already unique identity in my opinion and is what is familiar to me. While "completely faithful de-localizations" are a wonderful option for those who want it, this is much more what I prefer. This hack makes the NES version of Dragon Quest consistent with the modern localization. So it's perfect if you want to play Dragon Quest with a modern script but still experiencing the difficulty and visuals of the original version of the game... well, almost, as the NES version of DQI is itself an improvement on the Famicom version of the game. I would love to experience this script on the Famicom version. I will be playing Dragon Quest 2 with this patch, and I hope the other "Dragon Warrior" games receive the same treatment from Choppasmith some day. EDIT: For the record, this patch is incompatible with any experience altering patches. I tried adding the "Dragon Warrior Doubled" patch to reduce my grinding, and while it appeared to work, my exp and gold stayed at zero.

If you want to experience both the modern spell names, equipment names, and script AND the tougher challenge of the original game, this is exactly what you're looking for. I completed this and didn't encounter any bugs or other issues. I'd LOVE to see more of these patches for DQ3,4 (and beyond?). Highly recommended!!

This is, hands down, the purest and most faithful English version of Dragon Quest. Having played multiple iterations over the years (including the mobile port at least 3 times), this is by far the most coherent and superior choice. The dialog is warm and courteous, staying true to the Japanese spirit of the game. It was an utter joy to play and I can't wait to try the second game which by the way got the same treatment by the same author of this hack. THANK YOU, author-san :) PS: Hoping that a RE-Quest for the third game (and its sequels?) is planned!
| Now all we need are the modern controls | DragonflyShadows | 2019-05-31 | Version 1.3c |
An almost essential update for the game. The enemy + spell name updates are a must-have, but the script itself of the original is by no means bad, so the ROM expansion probably wasn't that necessary. Now all DQ1 NES needs to rival its remakes and the later games is the automation/removal of the 'Stairs' button and combination of the 'Search' and 'Take' actions.
| Must have! | Shogil | 2019-04-13 | Version 1.3c |
As somebody who played through the mobile port of this game about a dozen times (it's a cool game for commuting) I highly recommend checking out this translation. It's not exact as it's obvious the translator would be unable to code NPC's and events that were added in the mobile port, but you're not missing anything. And if you want the "QoL improvements" added in the mobile ports (doubled exp/gold) you're better off playing the mobile version.
